Well, after all this, I find your good mood pretty exciting! Apart from this: Poem is an exciting boat and your ideas for changes, to me, sound pretty exciting! I totally understand your ideas and I am with you in the opinion that what’s on there is probably not the original stuff, anyway. At the moment I don’t see me coming to Canada. But who knows, perhaps I’ll be over there before you get to Europe … never say never! And if I do, I’ll be happy to spend a few days helping to do work on any of the three boats you care for.

I think your plans are really great and very exciting! I especially love the little focsle cabin up forward which would be very cosy. Like you I think you need to balance the history and the heritage of a boat but also make sure they're livable and appropriate for modern life. It's a fine balance but you've definitely got this one, down I think. My own boat is the same thing; balancing the respect for a 1904 Dutch barge with the facilities and comfort that modern life affords. I'm really looking forward to watching your progress.

I think Poem will be a lot more practical when you have finished the refit, exciting days ahead. I think she needs trimming, definately down at the bow when underway - is there ballast that can be moved? I am sure that there will be a lot of innovation in the near future in terms of batteries - don't fancy the idea of Poem's cabin roof becoming a solar farm though.

Peter - boats live, breath, change, and have history. Poem's future rest in your hands. She is a fine boat, a page of yachting history, and now a member of your family. She needs love, attention, and respect. Find a balance that keeps her ship shape, puts your character into her history, and allows her thrive in todays world; then pass her on to someone else that will do the same. Observant folk that watch your channel see your influence and love in her already. Keep doing what you do, steer a course of integrity, and don't give any energy to the haters out there.

Poem is a gorgeous little boat, but it certainly does need some serious work done on it. I hope you can make it work somehow. Job #1 would be a bathroom. It must have been brutal trying to live or cruise on it like that. Yuk. Another big improvement should come from getting rid of about 200+ feet of that 300 ft anchor chain. Should trim out a lot better and get the nose up. The extra chain could even be used as ballast in the lazarette.

All your future plans for Poem are very exciting. I like your proposed new layout. I'd keep as much anchor chain as possible. Some of those Canadian arms are really deep and all rock. I like that the shots appear to be all color coded.
@kiwi_welltraveled4375
@kiwi_welltraveled4375 2 года назад
Could the chain still be shortened and replaced/extended using rope to reduce space and weight? I don't know if the winch is set up to handle different materials. Alternatively, if I remember correctly didn't Peter say the chain was too heavy for what's required, sell the current chain and use the proceeds to purchase a lighter more suitable chain...... 😀👍💙💛
@webbtrekker534
@webbtrekker534 2 года назад
@@kiwi_welltraveled4375 I understand but my reference was to the many inlets that litter the BC coast that drop hundreds of feet to an all rock bottom You want the weight of the chain added to the weight of the anchor since there is, many times, no bottom that will allow an anchor to dig in.

Love the idea of going electric, possibly hybrid??? If you were to modernise the propulsion system to electric, wouldn't it be "exciting" to go the whole hog and do away with the rudder and current propeller. Replacing it with a small compact 360 degree swiveling thruster....... Just an idea, like you, dreaming of what an ultimate Poem would look. As always Massive Respect from Aotearoa, New Zealand. 😀👍💙💛

It was exciting to tour MV Poem and hear about your ideas to make the boat better. I owned two boats (23 ft sailboat and a 25 ft cabin cruiser). I found I was able to keep up the maintenance of both boats. The problem became spending equal time on them. Though I preferred the sailboat, my better half preferred the motor vessel as it was easier to operate and entertain guests. Sadly I sold the sailboat last year. However, I still get my sailing fix by crewing on a race boat and teaching disabled veterans how to sail. It’s a win win for me (but I do miss owning my own sailboat).

I am excited about the planned changes to M/V Poem. Are you sure you want to change the position of the electrical panel? Seems to be in a nice position to me, and not rewiring the boat would save time and cost. Nice re-engine plans, but I think a 3 cylinder diesel electric hybrid sounds like a great idea for the next 50 years. I'm looking forward to seeing the future of this boat. And maybe a Bed and Breakfast might want to use it during the summer season and take over the rental with payments to you for a fund to support Poem. Well, I'm sure you've thought of that. Cheers!

Thanks Kenneth, the electrical panel was always going to move, I made the wires long enough. It's not going far.
@duanemiller5606
@duanemiller5606 2 года назад
Go electric with lots of solar and put a generator under the bench seats in the back. This way if your batteries start to get low you can just start up the fossil fuel generator to produce electricity to either charge batteries and/or run the electric motor. There’s actually an electric catamaran that basically runs on the same principle it has no sails and is basically designed for island hopping however for longer oceangoing trips you can run their generators that will both power the electric motors and charge the batteries up so you can keep going without having to stop and let the battery charge.
@TravelsWithGeordie

Perhaps think WW II submarine... Size electric drive motor for whatever top speed based on prop and the boat design. Go with a diesel GenSet big enough to run the motor at top speed PLUS charge batteries. If you need to be in a hurry, you can be. If not in a hurry, run whatever speed you want to and let the GenSet lope along to keep the batteries topped off. Having been in the Straits a few times and seeing what the weather can change to in a very short time period, I am a BIG fan of the ability to "be in a hurry" heading back to port or a sheltered anchorage. Have you considered making the work surface in the forward berth able to hinge up, to allow installation and use of a basic head? Nothing fancy, just a "place to sit" for those times when you would prefer to be very near the wheelhouse...and the radio? Just a basic lift the counter top, open the cabinet doors, and take a seat.
@TravelsWithGeordie

I think a diesel-electric setup would be the best route for near future electric motorcruising, as you could reduce the battery capacity vastly by keeping most of your energy as diesel (or methanol as the shipping industry is heading). It also alleviates the range anxiety problem, which is something I at least barely can cope with in a car, never mind a boat.

You will now have two holes in the water to pour etc.The air B&B is interesting but there is lots of work involved on a daily basis. ( changing linen) etc plus regulations plus insurance issues etc.I think for example Victoria has banned air B&B’s in the inner harbour? I know our local marina did after two wild parties. It will draw new viewers and not anoy existing viewers by forking your boat work to a third boat without a clear delimeter. Outfitting it with solar or even doing some cross vlog polination with someone like Will Prowse would be good for the channel.the Air B&B bit would likely work nicely as well once you get the head situation sorted. As far as the Great American Loop is concerned, that is a great idea since you can trailer it over more asily and cheaply, that said, you will enjoy the trip much more in MV Jordy.

Looks good. How about converting her for Harbor tours. Lots of seating but no galley or beds 🤔. How's Loyd?

Sounds to me You spent quite some thought, even before adopting Poem, which is - as you always are, atleast sooner or later - a wise way to approach such a gift. The lady (Poem) is not only something to put on the shelf, she's demanding, requires love and care - as you said. The BnB could be a way to approach it, question is: Use existing (internet based) services or via the channel (and mouth to mouth): Pros and cons either way. Been following You since Geordie was on Geordie I'd say You go for the latter. The easy way gives you more work, maintainance, repairs, etc. hours spent Geordie and You need for a few dollars probably just making it go even, The hard way - being the easy way - taking on crew willing to work on Poem as they join in cruises and your beers. (Minimum requirement is bringing local brew before even stepping onto the railing). This would - from a subscriber and viewers point of view be fantastic. As a matter of fact, feel very tempted..

You might want to check out Electric Tollycraft on RU-vid. He is close to your area and been running electric for a couple of years.

I totally get the electric concept but I'm also a bit of a vintage purest. Would you need to cover the house with solar panels? My feeling is it would really effect the vintage esthetic of the boat. What are your thoughts? Regardless It's still a very exciting prospect!! 🙂

I agree, if the boat gets panels at all they will be on the cockpit canopy above eye line.

Would hybrid be an option for you(Poem)? Epower with a small ic engine for charging. Love your uploads.

3:30 and on. Is it just my impression or is Poem running a bit "bow down"? Weight distribution or just design characteristic?

Gosh yes, very heavy windlass, 300 feet of 5/16" chain and a big anchor. All to be reduced.

This thing is going to eat you alive with carrying costs, maintenance, and storage. Your channel has been successful by doing what you've been doing all along. I'm roughly your age and we seem to think alike. I sense both optimism and exhaustion in this video. I remodel houses. If somebody gave me an interesting house that needed updates I would feel flattered. On the other hand I don't really have the time to commit to another project. Could I let some young apprentice tradesmen stay there and fix it up while I film them and upload RU-vid videos in an effort to offset the cost of property taxes, maintenance, and materials? Yeah, no. That would take literally half of my available time. And all of it is spoken for right now. I'd offer back Poem to the original owner explaining my lack of time/bad timing/getting too old and the simple fact that it will be a perpetual money pit like all boats ever made. He will decline and insist that you sell it. Nobody ever had a problem donating to you in the past. He is no different. Use the proceeds to speed up progress on Geordie because, honestly, progress feels slow to me.

I wanted to add a few things. Poem can still have plenty of value even if you sold her. If Poem stays local you can revisit and film progress on future upgrades. The new owner would have a huge head start on their own RU-vid channel, for sure. That adds value to the boat. Unless you're financed some other way, anybody can estimate the donations to this channel and plainly see that owning 2 wooden boats is not economically viable for too many months. It would have to earn its keep quickly. The opportunity is there make it all happen, but the stress of it all will shave years off your life. This is the stuff for young resilient folks. Find a young buyer.
