Ewing and Barkley so under appreciated

During this game in particular (if you breathe on Patrick, it was a foul) - this is my first time seeing this many weak ass fouls called in Madison Square Garden - the refs normally use to let the Big Men bump and grind in New York - MJ23 G.O.A.T. not Queen James
@christopherbrock8913

Guys like Barkley, Glenn Robinson, Corlison Williamson, Vinn Baker, Larry Johnson ((undersized work horses down low in the paint, but could step back and knock down a jumper also) - Corlison Williamson was my favorite College Basketball player but he gained weight when he got to the NBA - Larry Johnson also - but nobody could stop Larry at UNLV , Corlison at Arkansas, and Glenn Robinson at Purdue - Shane Battie was that type of player at Duke also (unstoppable) - dam I miss Real Grown Man Basketball from the late 80s throughout the 90s

This season most considered the knicks as the best team in the nba. Slightly ahead of the 2X defending champs Bulls. Ewing was still widely considered the best center of the time. Next season in 1994 Hakeem closed all best centers debates.
@dbreiden83080
@dbreiden83080 Год назад
I loved Patrick Ewing. He was my guy. But he only made first team all NBA once in 1990. Both Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson were routinely making the first team over Patrick.
@paksta
@paksta Год назад
@dbreiden83080 I'm on the same page. Big Ewing fan. But it was genuinely seen as a 'big three' until Hakeem broke the debate. Ewing was very consistently in top 5 MVP voting too and generally on All NBA 2nds a lot. Interestingly, Olajuwon did not make any All NBA team in the year prior to this (1992) and was nowhere in MVP voting. Can't recall why... Daugherty was balling, but maybe also Hakeem contract hold out?
@dbreiden83080
@dbreiden83080 Год назад
@@paksta Knicks did NOT do right by Patrick. They had good teams but he never had that consistent number 2 scoring option. The teams had to rely on tough physical D and a lot of low scoring games in which Ewing had to go for 25/12. It was never enough..
@paksta
@paksta Год назад
@dbreiden83080 I dunno. At the start of this season, they had from memory Charles Smith, Charles Oakley, Anthony Mason, Ro Blackman, Derek Harper, John Starks, Doc Rivers. Can't remember if Greg Anthony and Hubert Davis arrived that year. I remember being blown away by what they'd put together. They went 2-0 up on the Bulls and were the victim of one of the most ridiculous defensive plays ever in G5. And then the next year, they were one shot away from the title and again(!) the victim of one of history's most ridiculous defensive plays. And they had a great shot in G7, but Starks was cold and they didn't use any of their other guards. Pity. If they gave Riley the sort of control Miami gave him, they could have kept up this standard too.
@dbreiden83080
@dbreiden83080 Год назад
@@paksta You just named a whole bunch of role players. Seriously. At the end the day it comes down to who is your Robin to the Batman? Scottie Pippen was that guy. He was incredible. People love to drool all over Michael Jordan as this God like athlete. At the end of the day in the eastern conference, he had the best running mate and it’s not even close. It’s not remotely close.

Barkley had some great moves in the post against Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason, who were both considered good physical defenders at that time.
@soramirez5473
@soramirez5473 Год назад
he was pretty agile. he used to back weaker players down in that post but against Oak and Mase he usually used his quickness, agility, footwork, and well skill. I think Mase used to guard him better than Oakley since Mase was more agile.. Mase was a better on ball defender and more versatile, but Oak was a better post and help defender. Mase could defend the post too, as he often guarded Olajuwan and others.. even Shaq

Paradoxically, the best measure of PHX depth was that they traded one all-star Hornack and two very good role players: Lang and Perry for Barkley, and YET remained talented and deep, and could achieve IMMEDIATE success in the 92/93 season. Barkley at first planned to be traded from Philly to Portland, but who the then Blazers could trade in exchange for Barkley and STILL REMAIN potent and deep like the Suns???

I know it's cliche to say it but 90's basketball had a different level of intensity, when you see the way they box out, how they fought for rebounds, even the way they handle the ball it's a different level of aggresiveness and intensity.

A few things... -This would have been an interesting Finals matchup if the Bulls hadn't made it. -Barkley was a better shot blocker than most people realized. -It didn't take long for Oakley & Barkley to get into it lol. -People forget Tom Chambers was on this Suns team. He was a former all star that who had averaged 27 a few years prior. When he took at least 15 shots, he averaged at least 20+. -Richard Dumas was probably the most underrated player on Phoenix but he couldn't stay away from banned substances. He wasted his talent.
