🤣 yes, I am, unfortunately hahah I’m also trying out this whole video making thing, just having fun. I easily cut about 20 mins more of rambling, appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching!
So it's an '88. The FIRST year of the 1200 Sporty. I own one, and they're GREAT bikes. 1988 and 1989 Sportys are basically the exact same bike. I don't get what the big deal is.
I didn’t know that about it being the first year of the 1200, that’s pretty sweet! Yeah, I’m moving forward with the project, I’ll live with it! Thanks for watching.
@@nooowayyjose The 86-90 Sportsters are awesome. People that own newer Sportys buy chain drive kits to replace the belt drive...all the 86-90s are chain drive 4 speeds with the bulletproof Evo motor. My 88 is a 1st year 1200 with less than 20K original miles. I bought it from the original owner who is 83 yrs old, and it's completely stock. The paint is GORGEOUS. All I changed on it was the bars and put a set of drag pipes on it and jetted the carb. It flies. You got a good one. Keep it.
@@handmadeindustrial Well, the reason I was looking for a 89 was mainly because I was looking to buy a bike from the year I was born. I’ve seen a few people share that the 86-90 years were pretty much all the same, just manufacturing dates really… In the grand scheme of things, I know its not that big of a deal. After taking it out a few times, I know this thing rips! Thanks for watching.
22 year old Son found an 89' looks identical to yours, 1 owner low miles, $2,000. Cleaned it up a little, got it running good, he loves it. His first Harley, now he is looking for cruiser, he's hooked! Best of luck, it will be a great journey for you! God bless.
That’s awesome! Sounds like a great experience so far, hope he finds a nice cruiser. It’s a bit of hit and miss around here, some 20 year sportsters go for almost $9k and then others are like $3k and sort of beat up, this was definitely one of the better finds! Thanks for watching!
You’re right, I was a bit upset at first, mostly at myself for such a bone-head move but yeah I’m moving forward with it. If it really eats at me for some reason, I may consider selling it, but for now it stays! Thanks for watching.
My first HD was a 1991 (I think) Sportster 883 w 5 speed. It was one of the most enjoyable bikes I ever owned. Fun to ride. Comfortable. Simple. Easy to maintain. Looks good. The 1200 is light years ahead of the 883 on power. Ride safe!
Thanks for the comment, could agree with you on the power delivery; going from a 2017 883 to this 1988 1200, it feels way more responsive. Ive been enjoying it all around! Thanks for watching
My first bike was a 94 sporty 1200 raked it out lowered the ass end foreward controls 21 laced front wheel sucks I had to sell it but the money went towards my big twin chopper build that turned out pretty sweet.
My First Harley was a 1980 Sportster. I really liked it. Bought in Oregon, brought to NAS Whidbey Island. I ride a 1983 Harley Davidson FXWG since 83. I live in Mount Vernon.
Great purchase! Your story was building up to be a big blow-up... With all the red flags (selling for someone else, wife listed twice but at a different price, going way down in asking to get the deal done today, etc.) this turned out to be a really good situation. I bought a car recently from a disabled former Sheriff Deputy... he hid so much about the car's problems by playing off as 'I usually don't like to...' For example, 'I don't usually like to keep all the doors locked, so I park in the garage.' Well, that's because the locks are keyed differently... Or maybe, because one of the windows leaks. So many more problems but that is just a few... ':-)
Thanks! I agree, looking back I feel like it could have gone way worse. I had the least “worst” thing happened and that’s subjective hah. Thanks for sharing your story, buying private market can be a toss up, never know the characters you’ll meet! Thanks for watching!
Mine is a four speed chain drive 883 Made in 1990 Absolutely brilliant bike 🏍 I think you got a bargain so you could always sell it and try find the perfect bike to make you fully happy because if your anything like me that would just niggle away and would end up finishing the project then still having to find the correct bike later. Either way you got a good bike 👍🏍
My 1st bike I had similar thing happen except they hid the fact that bike was rebuild title I didn’t know until later. In the end I didn’t care because turned out to be very well kept & solid. Only down side is than always hurt resale if that day ever comes to upgrade. Live & learn. Now anytime I look at bikes if I’m rushed or pressured in anyway I just don’t buy it & that turns out to be good rule of thumb. One year diff is no worry.
There is not a running Sportster (or any Harley) below 5k anywhere around 2 states that I live on the border of. Just saying. I had a 1986 883...9 HDs later I sold my $40k Limited and am so happy to have a 2008 1200 Sportster. And yeah, I paid $5700 for it last month.
Thats pretty wild, but the prices are only going up with the release of their new revolution max engine and the halt of the Evo sportsters. I would say I got a damn good deal regardless, it was just a personal preference I was after, no big deal at the end of the day. Thanks for watching.
That's a bummer you missed that detail. But looks like you still got a good bike. At the beginning of summer I started a hunt for a Sportster 1200s. Ideally a 2000-2003 because of the better brakes they started using. But would settle for a 98-99 because they had the dual plug heads that the 96-97 1200s didn't have. I finally found a 1998 2 weeks ago that was a 5 hour drive to go get. But it was such a good deal I did it. Was a little disappointed that I drove so far and it was a little rougher than what it looked like in the pictures. But it starts and runs great and now I get to build it into my dream bike. Once you start throwing parts on it to make it "yours", the year thing won't matter anymore. And if it does, sell it. Get an 89 and be completely happy with what you got.
Thanks for sharing, sounds like a similar situation. I feel ya, I’m totally okay with where I’m at now, I’m gonna keep moving forward with the project and hope it works out either way. Thanks for watching and good luck with your new to you bike!
That’s awesome, glad to hear it! I was annoyed at first, but after taking it out for a few rides, I love it. I’ll have to be smarter next time. Thanks for watching!
Rake it,21 inch front wheel lower the ass end will look awsome did that to my sportster when I had loved that bike but i cant afford two at least the money went towards my chopper build that is now completed.
You are over thinking it. Both years are so close to being the same bike. There is nothing you will find when doing your project. They were just about the same from1988to 2003.
Yeah, I would say I got a damn good deal regardless, it was just a personal preference I was after, no big deal at the end of the day. Thanks for watching.
I can understand wanting a model from your birth year. I've been looking for a 59 Harley for years, but they're always way out of my price range. I know it's a bummer but you'll have fun with it and find the right year next time.
Don't feel to bad, I don't know how many friends have done that... especially first time buyer... check out your new bike up n down... and make it your own.. don't get so down on yourself... just make sure you hook it up real good, and enjoy it... hey then if you still feel you must, sell it... we all take a chance every time we buy today... work it... 👍
@@nooowayyjose when I bought my chopper in pieces I payed 4000 for it,payed way to much since all I used was the motor, frame rear wheel front end,I was so excited to get another bike until I got it home and really started looking at it,had buyers remorse, thought that it could of been a 4000 chopper build but,not it turned out to be a 14000 dollar build but I love it,but what a headache it was to put together lol.
@@beardoallin657 Sounds like a situation I almost went through with. I has gone to see a Craigslist listing where they had a “full” chopper in pieces ready to go, I got there and had a weird feeling about it and walked away without buying it. I told them I would think about it and I almost went back; at the end of the day I’m glad I bailed, I think I would have missed out on learning how some things are put together. This is great platform to learn on. I’m looking forward to sharing more content.
Yeah, I’m living with it and moving on, bit of a shock day of, but not gonna let it stop me. You’re right the 86-90 bikes were pretty much identical. Thanks for watching!
Man, when you’re in a rush it makes you miss things. Lesson learned for next time. I’m my self looking at getting a sportster for a chopper project. Thanks for sharing! Any reason why you wanted an ‘89 specifically?
after trailering to buy the bike and negotiating a good deal, would you have backed out if you had caught the 1988 error? i drove about 125 miles with a trailer one time to buy a bike and thought it looked rougher than the ad portrayed...so, i backed out of the deal and drove home with an empty trailer. i just bought a 2006 1200 myself and have had a smidge of buyer's remorse. the bike is almost too nice for how i want to ride it.
You have an awesome starting bike there for a project. As a fabricator I never gave too much a fuck about year model when building these. You can cram, and grind and make brackets etc. Yours would be great for a street tracker cause of the 4 spd… but just build your chopper bro and ride it
Yeah, thanks, I’m excited to get started. In the grand scheme of things, I know its not that big of deal, and I’m moving forward with the project, I am excited to get my hands dirty. Thanks for watching!
Dude a year in it what's the diff? I thought you were going to say the frame was cracked or something? IT looks nice . All that chrome ( heads ect will polish like a mirror) I think you paid a good price considering it's a 1200. I had a 1991 1200. Didn't have much luck with mine but here's hoping yours is better I'm sure it is. 👍🇬🇧🇺🇸😎
Yeah, I would say I got a damn good deal regardless, it was just a personal preference I was after, no big deal at the end of the day. Thanks for watching.
Chain is sweet. Anyone that has changed a belt, can understand how awesome a chain fix trumps belt on the side of the road. Regardless, you did fine, and green another subscriber here.
Yeah, I did a little reading online and saw someone else write a similar thing and of course I checked to see if there were other details I could find about my bike and it says manufactured in 87, so it does appear to be a true 88… I’m off the ledge now, feeling okay with what has happened, moving on and moving forward with my project! Thanks for watching.

I think still a pretty good Damnnn deal! Fortunately it’s tons and tons of parts and aftermarket parts available so pretty sure you can make your vision/initial idea bike! Congrats on your new Hawg!!!
You’re spot on, that’s how I’m thinking about it, there’s so much I plan to do to the bike that ultimately it won’t really matter! Excited to get started. Thanks for watching.

Yeah, it’s really not a big deal. I was after a 89 because it was the year I was born, but I’ll live with it. I’m moving forward with the project, thanks for watching!
@@nooowayyjose ok, now that makes more sense to me. Wasn't wanting to give you a hard time. I can't find a used Sportster for less than $5500 down here. I've had 3 of them in the past. Now I got a big ass Ultra Limited. I want the Sportster to run around on.
Trial and error brother, LOVE IT, HOW WE LEARN! I like the one you got, it's nice little work bike, errors happen. God bless you and your journeys on the Sportys. SPORTSTER4LIFE.
Definitely, got excited by the killer deal and some external pressures. Blessed to be in this position in the first place, no doubt this thing will be fun to rip around and tear down to the frame when the time comes! Thanks for watching.
Don't know about there, but here in Aus, it can be an 89 model but build date/rego date will say 88. I have a 2018 breakout, m8 but transport department sees it as a 2017 as that's the build date.
Yeah, I looked into it a bit more because I saw this as a possible answer, but yup it was manufactured 12/87… so a true 88. I’m over it, bone headed move at the time, but I’m happy and moving forward with my project! Thanks for watching!
Thought the same thing hah, but I did look into it, the bike was manufactured 12/87… so a true 88. It’s all good, I’ve come to terms and moving forward with the project! Thanks for watching.
Yeah, bro I'm going to have to ask you to give me back by 13 minutes and 14 seconds I just wasted of my life! Watching this video The bike is still pretty badass I'm sure was some upgrades it'll look sick as f*** good luck in your adventure. LOL
It can be a 1989 model year bike that was built in 1988. Back then, Harley Davidson would release the next model half way through the year eg the 1989 range of bike were release mid 1988 and went until mid 1989. Technically the bike is older than you buts it's still a 1989 model year bike.
I don't know much about the Sporty, I'm a big twin guy, but I don't know of any major changes or differences between 88 and 89? So unless you know something I don't, be happy with it.
I think you’re right, I was after an ‘89 because that was the year I was born, but it’s all good, I’ve been out for a few rides at the bike ripps, super fun! Thanks for watching!

Yeah, I’m okay with it now. Bugged me at first, dumb mistake and oversight. It was actually built 12/87, but it’s all good, moving forward with my project. Thanks for watching.
@@nooowayyjose cool like i said 1987 to 1989 sportsters are the same it got a small face lift in 1990. so it is just a number on a piece of paper . injoy your builld

In my previous video, I had described my ideal criteria for buying another used bike… which was specifically buying a ‘89 Sportster. I thought I found one. I realized after getting it home that in fact it wasn’t a ‘89, rather a ‘88. In the grand scheme of things, it’s actually not that big of a deal but is a mistake and lesson learned, and now I’m moving forward with my project. Thanks for watching.
The mistake was that I bought and 88, when I was trying to buy an 89, and I didn’t want an 88 I wanted an 89 because that was the year I was born. I made a previous video about it. I know the bikes are pretty much the same from 86-90, and yes, the manufacture date was 12/87, so it’s a true 88, but again, it’s not that big of a deal. It’s just a video. Thanks for watching.

Ahh man, what a miss. But the bike is so nice, you got a good deal and you will still be able to complete your project. :) Can't wait to see what you do.
Just watched this dude crying over one year of the bike. This new generation is so fragile, it's crazy. God forbid he gets the wrong shade of pink for the handle bar grips. 🤣
Bro, you made that nightmare story that took forever over nothing. over 1 year difference. I thought it was gonna be something juicy! New messed up on a year difference. What's the big deal! Get over it. Why would you make a video about that?!
All a work in progress, definitely not trying to rush anything and I’m not made of money, so I hope to get a few things done here and there, but overall trying to get it wrapped up before spring/summer of next year. Thanks for watching.
I was after a 1989 because it was the year I was born, the guy listed a 1989, I missed that detail on the title when I went to check it out. My bad and also their bad. I’ll live. The bike is awesome, moving forward with the project. Thanks for watching.
@@nooowayyjose I thought there might have been a big change between 1988 and 1989, but if it was just a preference, no harm no foul, enjoy the hell out of it.
