My 1st time seeing the infamous Young Boys Incorporated (Y.B.I.) on the 4th of July, 1982 on Dexter Ave. Limousines, Mopeds, Gold Chains, Adidas, Campaign Hats, Army fatigues, & loud music. That’s what I remember.
ill never forget the patent leather Top10's, and when it got cold YBI was famous for the Max Julian jackets with the fur on the hood, and Kangaroo boots with the pickets on them. i grew up on 7 mile and Ryan and used to ride the city bus to Osborne HS. ill never forget the summer of 1982 hearing Run DMC its like that, and planet rock booming in cars on 7 mile
Me and you bout the same age and I'm from the Eastside Mack and Van Dyke and i remember hearing about YBI back then. I actually had some family over that way near Dexter that we visited a couple times for the holidays in the summer and man it was a certain swag about them cats from that hood, it was a certain mystique about that whole area Dexter, Linwood, 12th Street, Hamilton, Woodrow Wilson, and Highland Park that just stood out from the rest of Detroit. Them was the good old days in The D man!
I remember in (83) my girl and I were at the Shorecrest Motor Inn where the (Ciique) restaurant is and I get a knock at my second floor door and when I opened it I’ll never forget there was a young man with a brown leather Max Julian hooded jacket with the fur, Top 10 high top Adidas, blue jeans, the straw flattop (campaign) hat and a white adidas blue logo t-shirt and evidently he must’ve knocked on the wrong door to deliver a package, when i appeared to not know who he was or what he thought I ordered he realized he was at the wrong door and left with no problem. I never forget that! Only Donna Sac leather store at the Northland mall sold those leathers and they were top quality leather and expensive. 💴 up there along with Pelle Pelle by Marc
Thanks for chiming in everyone. It’s important that Detroit citizens tell the Detroit stories. These stories are ours. This is OUR history & the events that shaped our lives & community. Peace & love to my city & the wonderful people in it 💯💯💯
