My 2022 Ram 2500 Cummins got a new PCM, and the MPG changed.

After 2 months in the shop, my truck is back and we took a road trip. I was curious if it would perform any different MPG-wise, and it did. It wasn't an exact same route as before, so let me know your thoughts on what could cause the difference.

@J Brous that’s insane mpg! I’m so jealous. Did you tune it? Or is it the lower elevation that makes it so much better?

I have a 2022, 2500 big horn and driving up and down and across the mountains in south western PA, in the summer months, I’m getting 17.6 mpg. On the highway running 70-72 I’m averages 22-23 mpg.

@John Stepanic 22-23?! Man what am I doin wrong?! Do you have a tune to increase mpg? Or is it your lower altitude?

No tune yet. Altitude around where I live is approximately 1700 to 1900 feet.

@John Stepanic I wonder how much of a difference that makes. I’m at 5,000 and went up to 7000 and back over the course of that trip, I guess that is quite a difference from where you are. 4-5mpg difference is significant though.

I have a 21 she just hit 15k mpg was around 20 on fac tires I changed to 35s with 20 inch rims and went down to 15 city and 17 highway at 65 mph the trick is to keep the mpg screen on and not lean in to much on shift points I'm glad you got your truck back man
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 Год назад
@raul salazar so sounds like you are I are similar mpgs, maybe that increased weight of the tires and increased drag from traction makes a decent difference.

There are so many variables that can affect it. The only way to know for sure is to do two identical runs at the same speed. Higher altitudes have a great impact too as the air is less dense. But for sure speed at the higher end has a huge impact on mpg. Usually the optimum speed is the lowest speed you can achieve in top gear but that is not always practical. If you can resist going too fast, say only 65mph, you will see a huge difference in mpg. It exponentially uses more fuel above that.

I went from AZ to MI and back in September. My overall was 20.5. Best was 22. I own a 2022 2500 Ram with the Diesel.

@G PoCat dang that’s great mileage! What was your average speed at that?
@gpocat4518
@gpocat4518 Год назад
@@gavinwalker5686 I did the posted speed limit. 65-75 and depending on construction zones.

G PoCat! Dang, so you weren’t even trying to milk it out! Just driving normal and got that. I’ve noticed my mpg drops quite a bit once I get over 70. Out here we have freeway stretches at 80, and if I follow it I get around 15, so now I just drive 75 tops, but even then I’m more like 17.5-18

I used to get over 20 mpg in my 2500 Chevy Duramax unloaded highway driving. Then the DEF Tank Assembly went bad. After more than three months, they “fixed” it. Now it gets about 16 mpg unloaded. I see the same 5-6 mpg drop when towing too. So, you should feel lucky.

@Joseph Duncan awe man, I feel for you brother. That's a big drop, and if it started off like that you probably wouldn't mind, but knowing that it has all this capped potential I'm sure makes it more frustrating.

@Christian Renteria that’s quite a difference that 20mph makes.

Don't go off the computers mpg. They are often not accurate. You have to do the top off and trip reset method to get the real number. Mpg is the most wrongly measured thing all over the internet on forums, groups and RU-vid because people go off the computer.
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 Год назад
@JTwelder, at the 18.2, it was doing the math the way you said, I just showed the computer to show how close it was to the real number. 👊 I’ve had the computer 3mpgs off before haha

I can’t break 16 mph on my 22 Ram on 35s. My 2020 with the same setup I could get 20.

@MN WX Guy weird, what’s the difference? Did they update to emissions system between then and now?
