PRO~TIP: Given the model year, it's proooooobably NOT the whole instrument cluster that's bad, it's just the integrated voltage regulator ON the cluster that's all. If you have half an idea of what yer doing, are handy with a soldering iron, and CONSTANTLY make questionable choices in your life, you can PROBABLY fix it without replacing it! tl;ldr = If you get lucky, it's a cheap fix!

I'm really happy to see someone with your skill and clout doing an 'every mans' build. We have too many RU-vidrs doing hypercar builds, or doing things that cost insane amounts of money and not really concerned with accessibility. What can a normal person with normal resources do to make their car more fun? I guess we'll find out soon...

As the person with the world record holding stock engine/trans probe GT, I can say he made a good choice despite what other people might think. Cars are indestructible once they are running well. I make 415whp/440wtq at 32psi with an HX35. Went 11.97@118.4mph. On Drag Radials. On a 100*f day with 140* track temps and a 7000ft DA. Only mods to the engine, are head studs and valve springs. Trans has an LSD, and a good clutch. The point of all this isnt to brag about my car, But to brag about the robustness of this chassis. The Mazda F2T engine with good fuel, and a good tune is basically indestructible. The trans with an LSD has proven to be tough. Like Toyota e153 tough. Some people have broken gears but I think that is more driving than power because this year alone, I have 122 data logs saved, with 30 or 40-130 pulls. 27 dyno runs. And 16 quarter mile passes, without a single broken part. I changed the oil once, and use good Valvoline VR1, and I changed the spark plugs once. Done right, you will have a reliable low 12 high 11 second car, that will rarely break if you know how to drive, and will gap almost anything on the street. Coyote mustangs, done. SS Camaros? Done. C5 Corvettes? Done. I've taken on CTS-V's, a Ferrari testarossa, which was a really random and fun encounter lol. I want more people to understand despite the name, and not necessarily looking good to some people, they were a very advanced, quick, economical and robust car for their day.

I remember these, I thought they were a kind of space age design for the time. Also, remember them being made for Ford by Mazda, too. “A 16-year-old’s first tuner car”, my first car when I was 16 was a Ford Probe. It was a super fun car for a kid and great to drive around when you had nothing to do. It still had 4 seats, which was great because only about half of my friends had cars. I can't wait to see what comes from this. The probe got a lot of garbage due to being the "mustang replacement", and frankly, because of the name Probe... I owned one. 92 GT. My 2nd favorite of any car I've owned. For the time they handled actually pretty well, and yes, I know some people don't like FWD, but grab a Gen 1 Turbo Manual or a Gen 2 GT manual, and the car was quick (for it's time) and handled fantastically. Look at old car mag reviews and you'll see this thing held it's own quite well against it's 2 door "sporty" coupes quite well.

I had a '90 GT turbo. Under the battery tray is a power wire for the headlight motors, it gets frayed and shorts out, this burns out the headlight switch and the lights don't go down. This is a common problem that drove me crazy until I found it on mine. Also if things don't work and the fuse is good, twist the fuse blades slightly. For some reason they lose contact. There is also a pigtail wire next to the fuse box that you unplug and switch between summer and winter, this changes the nesting position of the windshield wipers. Just a couple cool things about a fun little car.

Holy shit! I actually have a black 1990gt sitting in my driveway that I need to spend more time on! Assuming you have water leaks that you can't find check under the sunroof seal, it rots out frequently clean up the rust and silicone it back down, the sunroof drains will also clog and cause issues too. A filler neck and gas tank will be a nightmare to source, I hope it isn't either of those leaking. I might have a few spares of some parts kicking around if you can't find them, at least one of the headlight motors is probably toast, which is why they are doing less pop up. I am so glad to see one on the channel! If you want a cool future idea/bad influence, if I remember correctly the rear clip can be swapped out with a mustang rear end, and there is technically a tunnel built into the body for a drive shaft. I also highly recommend the 2nd gen cars, that v6 they put in was a ton of fun!

First, I would like to thank you for featuring this car on your channel, Mazda/Ford Probe is the best entry level turbo car you can buy. It is cheap, fast, reliable and you can put more HP for less money if you know how to do it. I had 3 of them, two 2.2t (F2T engine) and one 3.0V6 (Vulcan - Ford engine). 2.2T is the way to go, believe me, bottom end can take mid 300HP without mods with proper tune. If you do not mind, i can suggest couple of things: - HLA: you can hear them ticking, need new ones - Turbo: stock turbo (IHI) is good till 13PSI and after that it is just a hot air blower, To4 is the way to go. - Injectors: RX7 TII are direct bolt on and they flow a lot more - ECU: if you do not go standalone, try to find PROBINATOR chip, it pops on the market from now and then - Suspension: Second gen suspension will work on this one, and it is a bolt on (i think, i do not remember any more :) - Brakes: i think is the same thing - 2nd gen brakes and calipers... - Shifter: Honda CIVIC STS will work on this car, with small modification (2mm grinding) - Bonus feature: left foot-well, near the fuse box, there is a female plug x2 that is marked SUMMER, and the other WINTER, one si plugged with male plug if you change from summer to winter, wipers go and hide inside of the hood, or rise to windscreen (1-2'' movement). - Oh yeah, and the rumor is that it had a 148HP to the wheels, not the crank ;)

As for your inquiry I can tell you the best budget setup that you can possibly do. Put a nice clutch in it. And then weld a T3 flange to the factory manifold, drill a hole in it 38 mm wide or larger, and weld a 38 mm external wastegate flange. Bolt on a T04b 50 trim, with an upgraded 360° thrust. Use a 10an Drain to the pan. Get a probinator chip, and a socketed 89 ECU, get a walbro 255, and adjustable fuel pressure regulator, set your base pressure to 60 psi. Stock 330cc injectors, will do about 250 WHP At 16-17 PSI. I wouldn't go much further than that, as you will be out of fuel, and timing is pretty aggressive with the factory ECU. The chip doesn't change the timing. Just fueling. And eliminates the factory boost cut at 12 psi. If you try and modify it with a stock turbo, the factory RHB5/VJ 11 turbo grenades constantly. Better to just upgrade the turbo right off the bat, have the injectors cleaned, make sure the engine is healthy and you have a decently sized exhaust, put a cone filter on the vam, and boom. Reliable 220-250 horsepower rocket ship with 270-300 ft lb of torque at the tires. If you can figure out the welding yourself this setup is going to cost you around 1,500 bucks. If upgrading the intercooler with an eBay bit with some eBay piping is in the budget, I would recommend a small front mount upgrade.

Thats interesting how Ford USA took a Mazda engine and slapped it into a body they designed themselves. Here in Australia we had the Ford Telstar TX5 which was basically a Mazda 626 with the same engine as yours. We also had a baby version called the Ford Laser TX3 which again was based on a Mazda 323 but it came out as either a FWD Turbo or 4WD Turbo. They were really popular back in the late 80's/late 90's but now they're rare as

Thats my first car! Had it in white with red interior 5speed also... I remember during test drive with the owner before i buy it, i didnt want to kinda step on it just to see what it can do( 17 year old back then) cuz i was kinda not feeling comfortable with the owner next to me. So i bought it anyway, drove really nice, it was in EXCELLENT condition everything worked on it, good tires on it, so i paid him, next day brought it over my house, took his plates and i was waiting for mine. After a few weeks got my plates and took it for a ride, i will NEVER forget that day! I remember i was like ight lets do a small pull to see what it does, so i start with 1st gear, didnt pop the clutch, but i let it roll and as soon as it rolled i just stepped on it, 1st wheel spin, 2nd a little wheel spin but a hard ass pull.....i was like daaaaaamn wtf did i just buy??? Im telling yall, many cars couldn't keep up! That little f*cker was FAST!!! now im back to greece, and too bad i cant find on here, if i would still be in the states, i would buy one in a heartbeat!!!

In 1991 one of my friends purchased a Probe. Just like this car as a two year old example. He loved the car and endured much ribbing about it. I had a sign shop print me some "Anal" decals in matching font and everywhere the car said "Probe", I added the "Anal" decals. 3 years later when he sold the car, the "Anal" decals were still proudly in place.😇

I am pretty sure you are mistaken on the 2 door Front drive cougar... 99.9% sure that is 2 door Ford Contour. They had ditched the MN12 based Cougar in 97 as sales slumped but they didn't want to lose the nameplate so they made a 2 door version of the Contour stealing some SVT Contour bits.

When you do the headliner get dab brand landu top adhesive in the gallon paint jug. You can spray it out of the cheapest paint gun harbor freight has. Unlike painting you want it to splatter a little so make the flow a little heavier than when you paint. The landu top adhesive is for vinyl tops and last way longer than the cans you can get at the parts store. It is also uv rated

I owned FIVE of these '89~'92 probe GT's yes, I know😂its ridiculous) My first one I got, I was in highschool- These really were surprisingly quick! But as a highschooler's very first vehicle?! It was a DAMNED fast car!lol As I got older and wiser and after owning a few of them, I finally learned how the wastegate operated by way of the "boost reference line" and fabbed up my own adjustable valve in order to make a poor man's manual boost controller which worked very well considering However afterquickly reaching about15 psi, the "vane airmeter"was maxed out In other words the dreaded "fuel cut" was reached- the injectors could no longer provide enough fuel to compensate for all the added boost. Now, whether or not this "fuel cut " was from the vane meter maxing out and no longer providing a good signal to the ECU, OR if it was from the fuel injectorssctually maxing out and could no longer physically provide any more fuel, I never found out, but I DID find iut the only intelligent way to get around it was to ditch the stock ford EECIV (ECU)and go with a "stand alone"ECU" Ive Seen fantastic results on RU-vid and also read about great results on forums that the "Mega squirt and Mega squirt JR. work very, very well especially considering how affordable they are (just search "ademanster" on Y T.: his knowledge : on those cars ('89~'92probe GT/Mazda MX6GT,and his knowledge on the Mazda F2T engine in General is arguably unsurpassed 👍 I hurt a lot of feelings😅 back when I had my PGT it could be shockingly quick with just very basic modifications By the way the shifter bushingsthat cause all that slopare located on the very bottom of the shift lever (easier access from under the car it's right above the resonator, which is about mid-way down the exhaust pipeand the "bushings" are just stiff rubber "inserts", one on each sideof course theyrno longer available from Ford though you might luck out from on online parts retailer, Back when I had all of mine the internet hadn't been around anywhere near long enoughto establish any real knowledge about the ford PGT, or it's sister car, the Mazda Mx6GT. Much less any info on the F2T From MY experiences with them, I know that little 2.2 12valve is,kind of an oddball engine, BUT it's damn tough-its an "old school design, with a stout iron block and a closed deckand the rods also seem to be pretty beefy, from all I could tell after pouring on the boost, beating the hell out of it, and inspecting everything during disassembly Another thing- the transmission is fairly tough -the gears are comparatively thickBUT the differential side gears may cause problems down the road after you start making some power, they start to press outward and the steel "pin" that they ride on will start sliding out of the carrier assembly and then as it rotates, it tears into the soft aluminum trans. Case, quickly wearing away the inner wall, ruining the trans case, and allowing all of the trans. Fluid to leak out. I've read that thesteel "pin' can be welded on, in order to keep it in place so that it doesn't start walking or sliding out of place -OH- and inside the transmission. The shift forks tend to be fragile- they're made out of cast aluminum I believe, so I wouldn't go shifting like a madman or you're liable to break them Also, after increasing the boost, and after you start making some power the front wheel bearings might start experiencing a "short life span lol - if you have any questions or inquiries just give me a text back- who knows, I might be able to help Oh -and look up "Matt Faul Probezilla" or "fallguy probezilla"here on Y.T. its a completely bonkers RWD convert ed '90ProbeGT powered by a 2jz😂😂but before the 2jz, it Was still a FWD F2Tpowered PGT, he took off the SOHC 12valve head and put BACK on a DOHC 16valve head from the much lauded"fe3"engine,and just that setup along with a new "stand alone"ECU (I don't know what brand was used got him into the 400hp range and down into the 11's at the quarter mile track😳 which I've always found to be damned impressive Actually, Iwas wrong- he did a complete engine swap:took out the f2t, and put in anFE3(which is in the same family of engines, except its a whole HELL of a lot better -has oil squirters, and it's a DOHC(I'm sure you know all this stuff lol😉so it's a 16valve head👍 the next version of his PGT was known as:"Probezilla" whichwas converted to a RWD setuop, powered by a 2JZ I've always thought it was pure insanity, and completely badass😅🤟🤟

Ford Probe was the first car down the assembly line in the Mazda Flat Rock Michigan plant with Mustang badges on it. Mustang Club of America had a fit about it being front wheel drive. So the name was changed to the Ford Probe. All the Mustang badges were removed and taped over and eventually destroyed.

Impulse buy 😆 Full service; replace any duff or broken parts with pre-loved ones; maybe graft-in a more modern intercooler (secondhand from another model of car); home-brew budget air intake for better noises; budget suspension upgrade. Big bang for low bucks on a car that deserves a better rep than it has 🙂 Wishlist item: budget headliner retrimming video, are there any shortcuts to an acceptable appearance when stuff is ragged and fossilised foam is showing? Guessing I’m not the only one who needs that vid 😆

Best thing my dad it was cut down the shifter and made a home brew short shifter for it. Now resides in the sky in car heaven because of rust, just wish the 90s Japanese coupé craze could come back.

My sister had a 1991 Ford Probe LX with the 3 l V6 a 5-speed and the fully digital dashboard. It was truly a fun car. I was lucky enough to be able to drive it a few times, but my 1987 Ford exp with the 199 high output and a 5-speed manual was I think better looking. And I still regret ever selling it. It was totally straight and had absolutely no rust on it. This all happened in 1995.

@@jamesgrossmann866 the B2200 is a Mazda truck design from before they shared any platform with Ford - mine is a 1990 and shortly before the Fort/Mazda partnership. The B2000 and B2200 trucks used similar engines to the 626/Probe and the turbo variants are rumored to totally bolt right up to the truck transmission and engine mounts. There's also the Kia FE3 engine from mid-90s Sportage SUVs that drops into these trucks. Not sure if they would work on a FWD vehicle but that's a much newer design and capable of making a lot more power than the original engine from my truck...
