One of my best friends has autism, when I was in third grade, I started to become friends with him, one day, my teacher came up to me and explained that my friend had autism. I didn’t care and I said, “ So? He’s just like everyone else, he just has a little temper.” I’m way past third grade and I’m still friends with him. If he gets upset, I draw him a picture or I’ll ask him to read me his favorite book, sea creatures. We are still friends. We draw, read, play, and more together. He hugs me everyday. He makes my life happier everyday. Just remember, don’t judge a book by its cover. He is the best friend I’ve ever had. I hope you understand everyone.

Thank you Amanda for sharing your experience. I've known a few people over the years with autism. I didn't always know what their situation was at the time.
I can because I'm autistic myself and know that neurotypicals operate within an invisible social economy that they're not fully aware(they automatically navigate like how you don't have to think about moving each leg to walk) and when people like me and many other autists try to play the same game we get ejected and vilified for not reading the invisible social narrative perfectly and sometimes failing to hit people's feel-good buttons. If you want to be the friend with someone with autism it'll sometimes take more understanding and fair-play than you may feel obligated to do because of expectations coming from social hierarchical structures that you operate under. This all isn't said to be mean, it's to say that it's very understandable that even the most charming and well meaning aspies can be isolated and alone.

Though i am quite withdrawn and need to step out of my comfort zone anyways. i need to at least try harder. But if people still dont accept us, who cares lol. I think i am so used to being withdrawn due to little social success in the past
I have autism, too. I met Chris at Angelo State University a few months ago, and while I truly admire his work, I really want to thank him for giving us a voice. I often feel unseen and disregarded because people don't understand me. @@bluestar5211 It means different things for different people. Overall, it's a developmental disorder that makes it hard to communicate in some cases or interact with others. We think differently and see things differently, just like Ryan said.

I've been with my autistic partner for 2 years and it's so lovely to see this side of autism being represented - the hidden disability where there's no clear verbal or cognitive disability. I find my partner is often overlooked because he appears so "normal" so his buttons and triggers are pushed so much easier, as people don't know. I am so glad a light is being shone on this :)
I’m going through a possible autism diagnosis right now and I’m 19. I was kinda scared at first because there’s a lot of stigma. But after doing research and seeing this video I think I understand ASD a lot more.
Heather Dee, I never got diagnosed as there are no psychologists in my area who work with older people on the spectrum, but I was actually relieved when the question of having Asperger’s came up and I started doing research-it explained so much I never understood about myself and struggled with. And now I accept myself and like being an Aspie. I came to understand that it’s not that I have s problem with being an Aspie-it’s society (generalized) that has a problem with it so it’s all good!
I am chatting with him on IG and we video chatted twice and consider him as a friend. He is totally kind, funny and cool and whe share a few common interests. I am really glad to came across this Video and got to know him. Thank You Chris :)

He's correct, there is no normal. Everyone is different. I, myself, have Aspergers, and I have experienced moments where people don't understand, so turn to hateful comments. But Autism is not a disease, it is something that simply means we see the world differently, and think of things differently. To anyone being bullied because you are on the spectrum; Don't let those words get you down. I have a 4 year old granddaughter who's been diagnosed with autism. I had issues with accepting that diagnosis, because she excelled at everything until around the age of 2. She was full out walking at 10 months, as well as communicating verbally. It was like she changed overnight, she started whispering to me and barely talking to others at all. I must say that this channel has really given me some much needed insight on autism, as well as other conditions. I wanted to show my appreciation to SBSK, and wish them success going forward.......you're truly AWESOME!!!!
My daughter was diagnosed at 2 months away from turning 4 after also walking at 10 months, having eye contact, loving to interact with us,being verbal n speaking normally for her age. Then things started to change around 2/2.5 because she would throw fits, which I just thought were normal temper tantrums at first,but also her language skills didn't continue progress beyond 3 word phrases or asking questions like kids do (why, what's that,etc.) N seemed to be more into toys/objects than kids/people. It was hard at first even though during the year we waited on a list for her to be evaluated for a diagnosis I had realized n accepted that she more than likely was autistic but actually being given that diagnosis n hearing it was still hard. But over the past 3 years since I've learned so much n come to accept it n just adjust things accordingly around her n do everything I can to help her be happy n succeed.
@@mallorygibbons4975 I know I for took for granted just how complex that 3 pound muscle in our head really is. After I left 1st comment, I suffered the loss of my father from cancer which spread to his brain. I walked in on him while he was having a stroke, his speech went first and by the end he was in a child-like state. I just continue to find ways to communicate with my granddaughter on a level that's comfortable for her. She's very good when it comes the puzzles, and Life is the biggest puzzle of all......so I'm more than certain, she'll be just fine. Thanks for sharing Mallory.

I feel you ! My son is 4 autistic he started off trying to talk walking before he could crawl and then at 2 it’s like he reversed now at 4 he whispers and etc but seeing this video. I know Ryan very well. He actually lives right across the street from my girlfriend and I. We went to the same schools together. I also have mild autism, but it’s high functioning like Ryan’s. Ryan is a wonderful guy and am very lucky to be friends with him.

RU-vid turned off their comments (and hid pre-existing ones) and won't tell them why other than to say it's to "protect the children" (even when the videos are of adults). And they won't budge and inch or even talk to them seriously about it.
This really makes me emotional. My son is 7 and is high functioning autistic. And it’s hard for me to connect with him and for us to understand each other. I’m so proud of my son we never give up! I’m thankful that this young man did this interview it was very helpful.
I feel same with my autistic son. I really want hugs sometimes but he doesn't like them or eye contact 😔 we do enjoy music together and for that I'm really grateful. Thank God for computers too 😁
PS my son graduated high school now. The melt downs are different now. Hang in there if your son has them. My son used to bang his head scratch his face yell and flap arms and hands. He is so mellow now it's really a trip. Now he just goes to his room sits in silence until he feels better. I'm ever so grateful for how he has grown to understand himself and what he needs to do for himself when he's over stimulated or stressed. Maturity is a wonderful thing in everyone.
Seriously, that "normal is a setting on a drier" line got me. So true. Been following your videos for a couple years Chris. I watch them with my 6 year old daughter. Been watching for over a year with her. She loves them. She asks lots of questions and she has befriended a few people at school who would be considered "different." Thank you for helping teach that there is no normal.
This dude is a genius!!! I almost wouldn’t catch the autism he’s extremely high functioning. I love what he has to say, definitely dropping some wisdom. He would make a great spokesperson, he’s so intelligent. I have two close family members with ASD and it always intrigues me how different each version is from one person to the next.

I’m somglad for people like him to speak for the autism community. So many people on the spectrum are nonverbal and can’t advocate for themselves, but people like Ryan speak up for the community and give them a voice.
I’m so glad that technology lie that exists nowadays to help people. I’ve seen some people on the lower end of the autism spectrum who are cognitively impared as part of their disaility making devices hard to use, or some people with autism that may be verbal, but have major difficulty expressing themselves properly. People like the man in this video who can fully understand the effects of autusm and how it can affect his everyday life help for those who cannot put those same feelings into the right words.

Hello! My six years old son has autism, and I am worry about his future very much. But this intelligent young man shows, how smart, communicative and open-minded can be a person with such diagnosis. Your channel inspires me to do more and more every day for my son, so now he speaks out entire sentences, although a year ago he couldnt say a word. Now we are learning to communicate to other people, and getting better with it. Thank you for what you are doing, and thanks for this interview with such a brave person as Ryan! P.S. You explain autism and your struggles and triumphs so incredibly well. I would absolutely be your friend! I think the thing I related to the most was struggling with failure, and backing out if you think you might fail. I relate to this SO much. It’s overwhelming but you can accomplish so much. You’re going to continue to be an amazing advocate. (Also- I loved the Harry Potter reference!!)
My youngest is autistic I'm amazed by her strength and mostly her brain. She's highly intelligent it blows my mind. Like I told her what is normal? No one knows because none of us are. I love autistic people because they're honest and genuine while most so called normal ppl are fake and can't be themselves.
Thank you so much for the continued exposure to others of not just those with disabilities in general but specifically autism. There wasn't even a diagnosis for Asperger's when I grew up and I have PTSD from the trauma and I still struggle with self acceptance. Thanks in large part to folks like you, a lot more people have now at least heard of autism/asperger's and know what it means. Only 14% of us are actually able to hold down full time employment and only about 40% are employed part time. We need to change this and things like this help with increased awareness and in turn helps understanding and accommodation of people like us. I've been on disability for a long time and now seeking part time employment again. I'm also already thinking about what I might could do as a career, rather what I WANT to do. It's very frightening and I know there are those who won't understand. But letting people know how they can help us in a positive way helps a great deal. I'm optimistic about the future. Thanks again. People like you are what is keeping this world turning.
Many autistic people make intense eye contact to compensate for the intense pain and violation it makes us feel. We do it because neurotypicals will not respect us or see us as human otherwise.

Oh yes! I would be a completly different person without my ADHD! Of course, because the syndrome makes our brain, thinking, feeling and behavior like it is. I love to have ADHD, my world is so intense, colorful, feelings are so strong, I am highly sensitive and very creative, my working and thinking is really fast... I think I wouldn´t bear to loose all that and be neurotypical... Sorry for my bad english, I´m german.

He has good eye contact and is communicating what he is thinking very well. I wish my 20 yr old son with Autism had that I have the same thought of "normal". I have four children, two with special needs, and I hated it when people would say to me at least you have two normal children. I usually would respond that there is no such thing as a normal child. My other son has ADHD and OCD and my only daughter is gifted. They are all adults now.
Dane Anderson - she was in the gifted program all the way through school. It means she is advanced in every area of life. Then in college she was on all the lists like President's, Dean and Who's who. She is now in medical school and she is doing very well. When she was little she could not relate to other children her age but could relate to those four or five years older. Trying to keep her from being bored was very difficult as she learned things very fast and would be doing things that were above her age. She was advanced in education and social skills. She is not on the spectrum but she was overly shy when meeting new people, except with the others in the program.
I have 4 kids too, 1 is diagnosed with Aspergers but they are all different and amazing. I love my aspie girl to pieces, she is such a wonderful kid! I pray people learn how to get to know other people before having opinions.
Authism has a laaarrrggeee spectrum, my mom has a friend who's grandson has authism but he can barely communicate with people, it's clear he can feel love and is pretty playful (he's like a little kid, always happy) but he doesn't communicate. Yet here's this guy who speaks and expresses his ideas better than most people, he seems so caring and composed I wouldn't be able to tell he's on the spectrum at all.
I especially liked what Ryan said about explicitly communicating your needs to another person. I think that is something all relationships could benefit from if we did it more, not just people interacting with someone on the spectrum (Sorry for the messed up sentence). Thank you so much for making these videos, these truly are some special and inspiring kids, adult's, families. My 17 month old daughter Blaise was born with a complete bilateral cleft lip and cleft palate. She has had 3 surgeries so far, two to repair her lip and put tubes in her ears, and one to repair the palate. She doesn't have any more surgeries until she's at least four (hopefully), she still has a very long road ahead of her and very many therapy's to go through. Listening to these different families and different people talk, shows me that people born different come out just as strong, if not stronger than many others. It also shows me that everything that she is going through is making me stronger as a mother as well. I'd really like it if you'd interview somebody with strictly issues relating to a cleft, I would be more than willing for you to follow our journey through my beautiful Blaise Grae's life. In addition to everything she is going through, I would love it if you brought attention to the dangers of texting and driving and how could have devastating effects. When I was seven and a half months pregnant with my daughter (Blaise, she is my first and only child), I was in a horrific car accident caused by texting and driving. I was not the one texting, the woman texting killed a man upon impact and in the car accident, my whole lower back was broken. I had to learn how to walk again all while being pregnant, thankfully my little cleft beauty made it full term in the pregnancy, she makes me so proud, she has been through so much before she was even born. I still have physical difficulties, all due to a text that could have waited. There's plenty more to the story, but my daughter and I's Journey just shows the greatness of God. I would be more than happy to share our story, either way, we are both grateful for what you are doing.

Ryan you are a beautiful, intelligent, insightful, courageous young man. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing yourself. We were recently told that my 3 year old grandson has ASD and watching you has really given me hope that the world will see and love him the way I do. And that when that happens it will be because of heros like you paving the way.
A lot of people could learn from these interviews. The wisdom they show in their answers just blows me away. The strength they exhibit is phenomenal and the ability to still smile while facing hardship melts my heart. It makes me take a moment to reevaluate things.

@@dinaamjad9854 it is an autoimmune skin disorder. My immune system attacks my skin pigment, so areas of my body are porcelain white, while the rest is my normal skin color. It typically gets worse over time. My white patches are mostly on my neck, chest, hands, arms and feet.
@@dinaamjad9854 Well I'll take that as a compliment! The sad thing is, not everyone sees the beauty in it. There's been bullying, judging, and rude comments. Of course, a lot of curiosity as well, which I like because I want to spread more awareness of this condition.
