My name is Kris and I would like to welcome you to TENKARA ON THE TRAIL! I am passionate about fly fishing for trout in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in Southern Montana!
I spend most of the summer on solo backpacking trips, deep in the 944,000 acre wilderness trying to reach as many of the 300+ fishable lakes as I can. Along the way, I fly fish the countless streams, rivers, creeks and lakes for numerous trout species: brook trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, and golden trout.
Anything with a little more backbone and length works well because of the extra weight of the floating line and indicator for me. I typically use the hellbender.
sorry if you talked about this in the video, but can you provide a description of the floating line setup? for example is it just like a 1 weight floating fly line? thanks.
It’s a 7m floating line from Daiwa. I also have a 4 m from Daiwa and a couple others from Dragontail. I tie a few inches of heavy tippet (like 0x-3x) to the tag end with a nail knot. The other end of that little transition piece has a tippet ring to which I tie about 8’ of lighter tippet depending on the rod rating and fish size. Hopefully that makes sense. I could also make a brief video to show more detail. dragontailtenkara.com/collections/other-tenkara-lines/products/daiwa-pvc-floating-tenkara-line
@@tenkaraonthetrailoh definitely a video would be great. i’ve been using 1 weight fly line on my KRC T100 for smallmouth bass (lately to cast foam cicada patterns). i’ve nail knotted a 2 foot piece of 12lb Maxima to it, and then end with a barrel swivel. it seems to work well enough. i’ve yet to try the specialty fixed line floating lines available. thanks again
I’m sure that would work great too. The other little modification I do is if the floating line comes with a girth hitch…I typically cut it off and make a little transition piece of level line from the rod end of the floating line (nail knot) with my usual arbor knot at the other for connecting to the Lilian since I don’t tie knots in my Lilian.
@@tenkaraonthetrail interesting.. on the lillian end i’ve used a perfection loop and some 20 pound fly backing for a girth hitch.. out of curiosity why no stopper knot on the lillian?
Beautiful Golden trout and the surrounding majestic scenery. All accomplished in a one day adventure, that is covering a lot of territory in less than 24 hours. Btw Oni got some good swimming in (perhaps he was fishing as well) LOL, thanks for the nice vid.
Yes. I keep one on my trekking pole. Fresh sign there the week before when I didn’t make it all the way in and I’ve seen bears there before. Black bears and grizz frequent the area.
Missed ya! I also noticed no missed or lost fish either on that Baby Rodzilla, maybe your golf game improved your hook setting? Just kidding nice to see you & Oni back on these beautiful streams. The trout caught, spectacular!!!
It always depends on where and what you’re fishing for….but I typically suggest starting with dragontail unless you’re fishing for really big fish, then Wasatch is worth a look. I also really like ESZ rods. All three of those companies’ rods are under $200. If you tell me more about how big the fish are and if you tend to use unweighted flies or bead heads I could get a little more specific.
They shipped it down from Canada. They now have a headquarters in the United States as well but you can either go and pick it up or have them ship it. The costs very on the model and the options, but none of them are cheap. You can go to their website to see more.
New subscriber here ,great stuff. New i am about to purchase my first rod i live in the Pittsburgh area ,where small creeks and rivers are plenty some . What would you recommend and size.
Hi Kris, Another outstanding video! Nice to see you fishing the Foam Spider again and good success with it. I know it works well with brook trout but, what I really want to find out is how it will do on big cutthroat trout in lakes and streams…Thanks, Karl.
I got one last fall to take in the pack on elk day hunts. I got into some brookies, had an absolute ball. I have the 6;4. I need a longer one but the quattro is awfully sweet.
Awesome fishing. Makes me want to try bringing my Portuguese water dog out with me, but I have a feeling his urge to swim will result in spooked fish. I picked up a Honryu 395 from their most recent production run but haven't fished it yet. Planning to take it up to the mountains next month and use it in more open streams than what I typically fish.
LOL, all 3 "Oni's" aligned. First cast, hook up, fight and landing of the rising trout in challenging water. REPEAT SEQUENCE. The three Oni Challenge accomplished, BRAVO Kris!!! Final Act: Cristening Oni's head with Master Oni Sakasa Kebari pinned on fighting trout. OMGeeee!!!! Hee Hee.
@@tenkaraonthetrail It arrived yesterday, I will take it out on Monday and let you know. I love the look though and am surprised with how light and comfortable it feels in my hand. I chose the 300cm btw.
@@tenkaraonthetrail fished a small local pond but ran into afternoon thunderstorms . Fished both 3.5 level line and ESZ pet furled. I preferred the furled when casting small kebari like I did. Rod was comfy and very accurate when casting.
Merci.
I used 390cm of this line dragontailtenkara.com/collections/level-lines/products/oni-ryu-org-ll?variant=39273097789621. I tie my own flies but these are similar: www.caddisflyshop.com/rowleys-pay-czech.html
Do you have a recommendation for an ultralight tube for storing rods while backpacking? I just got a Dragontail Kaida for my upcoming JMT thru, and the tube iit comes with is lovely but too heavy
I have not used a furled line with the Icewing prototype. It is very soft and I would much prefer a light line with it. The ragnarok is a very different rod and would do better with a furled line.
@@tenkaraonthetrail Thank you, follow on question if you don’t mind. Which would you choose for casting wet and dry flies on small ponds and lakes like in your video?
Kris, fished that TB40 like a trout magnet. " Alright a couple more and then we're moving, and I mean it this time (laughter)". Climatic video moment was the cast, snag a tree, hook the nice Brown that frees the snag, fights and gets netted! You can't make that stuff up in Hollywood!!!!! Excellent. And you saved the 2 flies.
Whitefish are really cool, glad you’re able to catch so many. It must mean that water is super healthy. Do you keep and eat them too, I heard they’re better than trout. Never seen one is person.
Yes, the whitefish need clean and cold water and are native here. Sometimes they are the only fish you can catch on winter days. They are good to eat, particularly smoked!
The line was a two-piece… 3.5 Oni and 3.0 green, but I don’t know the brand on the Green offhand. I usually just use Rio Tippet… 3 to 4 feet depending on the depth
Thanks Michael. Oni is a solid 56 pounds now. He’s a great fishing and hunting buddy. I caught a couple other nice browns that day as well…part 2 and with the Oni honryu 395.
@uneautrepeche the rod is 4m and the line is the same length as the rod plus tippet. I tie my own flies but you may be able to find them online. They are call “Pay Czech” nymphs.
that first stopper knot is a figure eight knot. It is NOT a square knot. But the video is very helpful and finally i know how to use this tiny short little line at the tip of my new rod.
Casting the Nissin Air Stage Fujiryu 330 5:5 does not solicit, but rather begs the Age Old Philosophic quandry: "...You may get tired of catchin' fish ha ha ha that's not possible is it" ? ( Kris F. Circa 2023) Inquiring Tenkara Minds wanna know and your Review delivered. Thank you.
