I've been wanting one for a while, but it seems all of them have drawbacks that make me wanna wait. Looks like this one is no exception, unfortunately. :(

I had the Zhiyun Crane V2, but it broke the first day of using it. Used it with my Nikon D500. But now I'm using a Moza Air and I love it.

Matti, maybe just putting the motor strength option on HIGH probably the 1DX wont jiggles anymore, try that, I have one btw, for me its a great gimbal, nothing to complain

False information in this video: Zhiyun released a gravity adjustment plate to accommodate the 1DX mark ii. I own both the crane, the adjustment plate and it works flawlessly. Also - you said you don't want to "battle" with a tool - it should just work? In what universe does anything work right out of the box? Not even glidecams work immediately; hell, you have to BUILD the glidecam before you can even use it. You should have taken your time and balanced it properly to avoid the nodding. You're doing a big disservice to this company by not having followed the instructions, and presenting the product to the masses as if it's faulty or defective. The crane isn't faulty, your *"let me throw it on and NOT balance it or change the motor settings"* mentality is faulty. To any 1DX people reading this, I own this setup with a 1DX and if you balance it like you're supposed to do before shooting, it will work just fine. No nods or defects. I'm just upset becuase this is the first company in a long time that's actually taken the time to listen to its customers, and change what needs to be changed; i.e. the 1DX not originally fitting on the crane, so they made a new adjustment plate to accommodate. I like your channel, but you shouldn't review anything until you have actually done your research. It's not fair to these companies who are doing their best to help consumers like you. I'm sure you wouldn't like that to be done to you with your company/ luts/clothing biz or whatever else you offer.

Love ya matti buuut, you gotta dig in more. Firstly, zhiyun makes a new gravity arm for the crane 2 that is longer for the 1dx. Second, that nod only comes when the motor setting is not turned to strong, and/or you’re not balanced. Here’s a pic of my 1dxii on the crane 2 with a canon 85mm 1.2 lens! No wobble at all! instagram.com/p/BfaNG6-BJZ6/

Totally agree and I’m a fan Matti, but your video just felt like you didn’t want to like it before you tried it. Not to mention the there are accessories now that make the the ixd 2 easy to put on. Also crane 2 is easy to use with the handle on top which is simply not possible with the glide cam. You didn’t even mention advantages like that. I get you like what you like but I enjoy your reviews when they are more comprehensive. Still a fan though and your videos are great!

@TheZX11
@TheZX11 6 лет назад
Yeah, I think he didn't have it really balanced. He seemed to have it pendulumed so the weight was just at the bottom, not centered. Nice big gimbal but my entry level DSLR is too light for the Crane 2 or glide cams. The V2 is a better fit. I guess the glide cam is a better fit for the OP's style.
@RobertArmstead
@RobertArmstead 6 лет назад
@matti - Zhiyun made an extension arm specifically for the 1dxmk2. You also have to adjust the settings to "Strong" to get it to handle the 1dx mkii, it handles my c100 just fine and it is a bit heavier. I hate to be critical of your review - but you really should learn the tool first prior to review. Also the dual handle makes this tool better than the Ronin-M in my opinion.
@131media
@131media 6 лет назад
C100 mark I or mark II? And what lens do you usually use with that setup? I have a C100 mark II (and would probably use my Canon 24-70 F2.8 mark II with it) and have been contemplating this gimbal but wasn't sure how it would handle my camera and lens setup. Thoughts?
@RobertArmstead
@RobertArmstead 6 лет назад
I have it on with a 35mm 1.4 and I have gotten it on with the 24-70 mk i. It works because the camera is back heavy enough to allow it to balance sufficiently. The main issue with this setup is more about adjusting the aperture, focus, and overall settings while in use as you will not be able to balance this setup with the grip on the body. For the c100 mk I, the focus dial and controls do not work. I do not know how they will function for the mkii, but I am going to have to purchase a grip relocator and devise a way to wire it to the camera.

Matti, I'm lost. Why do a review on gimbals when you admit that you didn't take the time to balance it (but admitted that it takes time to learn how to balance and use a Glidecam), and most importantly, you said you don't even like gimbals in your Glidecam video. Why even do a review????? I love your channel and I've been a subscriber for a few years, so not being negative. But this just sounded like a gimbal bashing video. Oh, and they make handles for people that need two hands to turn it. IJS.

Not a bad point, but I think he's testing it against what he's willing to spend on setup. It sounded like he was willing to spend just a moment balancing it, but not a bunch of time fine tuning. In that sense, it's not about whether the product works at all, but a matter of how well it fits his chosen workflow.

Like other people said, you've to change the motor settings for heavy cameras, takes 5 seconds to do in the menu. I can use my RED Scarlet-W on this Crane 2, so a 1DX shouldn't be a problem. And you can buy a dual handle for the crane 2, works really well.

Matti I love your videos, and you've really helped inspire me to push my videos skills forward. I am so thankful for that! However, this video is very unfair and really just wrong to this company. The idea behind a product review is to get into the nitty gritty of a product and share your findings so the typical consumer who may not be able to go out and try one has all the facts before purchasing it. You are obviously entitled to your own opinions and people clearly appreciate them or you wouldn't have so many subscribers tuning into every video. People care about what you think! That kind of following comes with a responsibility though. This company has put hundreds of hours into a product they designed with their customers in mind. Hell they probably took your voice into consideration when making it compatible with the 1DX mk2! And it's straight up wrong to tell an audience the size of yours that a product is bad without even really looking into it. Had you used it as intended you may have found you really liked it, but who's to say when you slap the camera on, see an issue with a complex product that was never set up, and declare it broken before reading the instructions. Imagine someone opening a steadycam, slapping their camera on top, and posting a video declaring it broken when it flips over because they didn't attach the weights. That would be insane! And that's exactly what this video is, but with a massive audience! It's unfair and wrong to have even posted a video that slams the product of a small, growing company without even giving it a real shot. It's like you just picked a random gimbal to bash and this company was just the unlucky one that had their product and reputation dragged through the mud so you could rant to hundreds of thousands of people who watch your content. I know you won't ever read this, but man, I feel like that it has to be said since you don't seem to have an issue with this video even months after upload. 😕
@Macsnapsmedia
@Macsnapsmedia 6 лет назад
Love your content, but you really dropped the ball on this one Matti. All of your issues with the product have been resolved by either the company or 3rd party manufacturers. And if you want a different form factor there is the Ronin line from dji. This is like the 3rd(?) "I hate gimbles" video in only a few months. You already know your solution, stick to the glide cam.

I have Glidecam HD-2000 and Zhiyun Crane 2. I'm not a very experienced user of Glidecam, but after all the times I used it, I can say that's really difficult to balance it, especially with big lenses. You should put extra weight to balance this thing, and it gets too heavy. I also was surprised how it's easy to get smooth shoots with Zhiyun Crane 2. Balancing wasn't difficult part at all too. I like to have an ability to change the apperture, ISO, and shutter speed from a joystick. This gimbal is a really nice tool for run and gun situations like weddings. As you mentioned in one of your previous videos it's quite good in filming low angle shoots. I agree that motions looks more natural with Glidecam, but for most situations I'd choose Zhiyun Crane 2. Thanks for one more good video. :)

For the case smell: if you leave it open for a day or two, the smell will go away. I had the same issue with my drone case, but after two days the smell disappeared and never came back (I was able to take the foam out of the hard case to really let it air out since it’s the foam that smells).

Love your videos Matti but you should really have done a little more research before making this video. Zhiyun offer an arm specifically designed for the 1DX. You should have used the app (which is one of the best features of Zhiyun gimbals) and changed your motor settings / pan sensitivity etc. You can also buy dual handles and halo ring adapters for the crane which answers what you said at 8:10 - I've owned a glidecam and now own a gimbal and I have to say with the amount of extra weight and skill required, glidecams just aren't worth it. However, I cannot argue that they do give a more natural and smoother feel to your footage and are probably more practical for travel etc.

LMAO at the case smell😂I have the Crane 2 and I haven't experienced that nod. There is a facebook group for cranes with tons of answers for solutions for these kinds of problems. It can be accomplished with your setup tho.There are dual handle options for that gimbal. Zhiyun has also been releasing a lot of different handles that are looking to answer your request of different ways of holding and operating the gimbal. Great vid Awesome gimbal. I love this thing! Also looking forward to what DJI will bring to the table with the Ronin-S

You have great videos but I have never heard anyone bashing the form factor of a single handed gimbal before? Saying that the design is outdated is like saying that you think cars on wheels is outdated. Single handed gimbals are designed for ease of use and portability. If you want more stability get a dual handle. It's gimbals like this that makes it possible for us consumers to want to film rather than not to use anything at all.

Love the Video Matti, but I think a way to fix the nodding problem with the camera is to make sure the motors are set to Heavy (I think that’s what’s it called) there are tree different settings for lighter cameras like Sony a6500. Maybe that will fix it. 🤷🏾‍♂️ I have Crane 2 too. Love the thing to pieces.

Hi Matti. Unsientific review - you're absolutely right 😆 I ordered the longer arm (gravity plate for 1DX) on ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/Zhiyun-Crane-2-Gravity-Adjustment-Plate-1DX-/232638877282 I mounted a Canon C100 Mk II which have the same problem as 1DX, it has a lower center of gravity. After that i calibrated the gimal. And it works great now. No shaking and no drifting when setting it down. I have also bought the dual handle and the little remote (a bigger one with follow focus is on the market now). But now it's a great and very stable solution. I have also tried a Glidecam, and the learningcurve is huge. The Zhiyun Crane is a lot easier to learn. I don't think this review does the Crane 2 justice. It would be like if i ordered at small t-shirt from your merch-store, and wrote that it doesn't fit a grown man like me. Or if i would make a review of your presets, whitout having a Canon camera and an editing suite that supports your presets to test it on. You have to test it again, with the right equipment and the right settings (heavy) and calibrate it like described in the little manual or in videos here on RU-vid.

Good points but dont agree at all. I bet when you first started using the glidecam it wasnt easy or perfect to set up either and you probably had to do a lot of adjustments until you practiced enough with it right? Well same with this gimbal! Take some time with it and i bet it'll work perfect for you so much better. I have the Crane V1 and it has been such a big improvement on my quality of videos and has almost never let me down! There are dual handles, attachments and so many other improvements that theyve already done in the past years and i love it. Just my 2 cents...

Glide cames are old school garbage and Cranes/gimbals are WAY better and much much easier to use in any circumstance and stating otherwise it like the old argument between film shooters and digital. Steady is a PIA period and the learning curve is huge, much less going from high to low shot’s is a breeze with the crane type gimbals. Not to mention balancing!!
@adrianpocea2287
@adrianpocea2287 6 лет назад
Totally agreed. I bought it and I will keep it. I am practicing with it. But to say that this is a pleasure to use and indispensable to videographers is pure lies. Most footage that I have seen, especially from wedding videographers, contains like 10 inches to 50-70 inches of smooth travel and then the frame goes to cut. The truth is that it cannot replace jibs,cranes, travling rails etc. Even perfectly balanced before, even with a catwalk of not lifting the body and keeping a horizontal line it wobbles for anything longer than 3-4 yards walk. And I suspect that most shots we see are additionally stabilized in post

Matti, the thing is, obviously we don't have the same luxury as you have to test the gimbal. We can only do a research online and decide. By the way, have you tried to set the load setting on the gimbal before you mounted your DX? I believe the shaking problem you had is due to wrong load setting. And you forgot to mention that for the Crane 2 there is an accesorie handle so you can use two hands left and right. That is an additional expense of course.

I know it's not plug and play easy but I think if you use it with enough frequency, you'll get over that hump. It takes time but I wouldn't leave to a shoot without it. Keep trying Matti!

Can anybody please help me out? I just bought the Pilot-fly h2-45 on sale and got it for almost half its price. I love it, it’s smooth but I find it a bit heavy and big to carry around. I want to return it and buy the Zhiyun Crane v2 cause I’ve read that it’s smaller and lighter. I want a portable and smooth gimbal. Got the Sony A6300 + sigma 30mm lens so it’s not so heavy but planning on buying a a7iii in the future. What should I do? I really appreciate any tip. Thanks!

Seems like a completely biased "review" seeing as you're a glidecam user and obviously dislike gimbals. You recommend your viewers to test out the equipment they buy, yet you didn't do that. No balancing, no motor adjustments, nothing. Just pure trashing of a company that built this thing and then giving the old "but that's just my OPINION, don't let MY thoughts discourage you from buying one, oh no no, my hands are clean." "The gimbal is hard to balance and learn to use and I want everything to work perfectly out of the box..." - is what you're saying. Seems to me like it's completely oppossite. Seems like you don't like that more people can have better shots without having to learn to use something like a glidecam. I won't go into the psychological aspects in detail but anyone who reads peoples faces, body language and most importantly the way they talk can see what happened here. I came to see this video out of intrigue as to what may be wrong with these small form factor gimbals because I was scared to get one, because there has to be a catch right? Yet I leave with a dislike for you as a person and an even more convincing idea of purchasing one. So thanks I guess. Goodbye.

Matti, the NODDING from the gimbal is an extremely easy fix. When i first purchased this gimbal, i had this problem too, but all it took was a little research to figure out. All you have to do is go into the Zhiyun Assistant app, and change it. The factory settings of the gimbal’s motors are set to “weak,” you have to connect your phone to the the gimbal through the app, and manually set the motors to “strong.”

@Subparanon 6 лет назад
Hey, so the nodding issue, you need to use the app and select a lighter stabilization. 3 axis gimbals work using digital loops called PID loops. These are the electronic feedback mechanisms that detect and compensate for motion. If PID settings are dialed up too high, you get jitters like that. If they are dialed too low, you get drift over time. Believe me when I say it's much better to be too low, than too high. I fly radio control helicopters that do something similar, and if you accidentally fly with too high a PID loop sensitivity, it will literally shake itself apart, and then try to kill you.

Great review! I have this gimbal and it has worked perfectly. I have never had this nodding problem. Maybe the problem occured with trying to adapt the gimbal for 1dxmkii. I just saw Sam Kolder use his 1dxmkii on this gimbal, maybe he can give you some tips!

I'm thinking about buying the DJI Ronin-M. The footage looks really smooth and you can hold it in different ways. You should test the Ronin if you haven't yet. I'd love to see a review of it from you! :D Love your videos Matti! Keep it up!

They have a special thing for the 1DX on their website: www.zhiyun-tech.de/produkte/accessories/607/zhiyun-schwerkraft-justierplatte-fuer-1dx-fuer-crane-2 And I like that they don‘t include it right away, because for a sony user like me i‘s nice to not have something sticking out there

Hi Matti! I was convinced to purchase Crane 2 but yesterday I watched Casey's Ronin S review and now I dont know which one to buy. I have a GH5. Which will you go for, Crane 2 or Ronin S? Many thanks!

I've had this nodding issue with the first crane and the sony a7sii with even small lenses, balanced properly and using small light lenses. Like you I hate not being able to trust the tool I'm relying on. Good to see as I was about to buy the 1dxii and new crane for it.

I picked up the afi gimbal with the handles. $200-300. Handles control it too. Not to self promote honestly but I have a video on the afi, if anyone’s curious about one with a handle

Parker Walbeck did an amazing comparision in real life between gimbal & glidecam. I think that we should all agree that both devices are just tools for specific type of shots. :)

hi Matti I also have the crane 2, which I felt the same using it on one hand, that why I have bought the duel handle, it helps with the handling and weight distribution, also try us it upside down like the dji ronin M, it feels a lot better, can you also do a review on the duel handle see if we have the same prospective, have a nice day !! simon

It's really strange cos I had never a problem with old Zhiyun Crane.. But I still ordered Crane 2 for Nikon D7200 which should be ok to support the weight

you didn't address the fact you can get the 2 handle grip and wireless remote for controlling the gimbal and follow focus in a much more comfortable way of holding the setup and using FF simultaneously.. theer are a ton of accessories out or coming out for the crane 2

I hope DJI's version of this rig blows them all away. I agree it would be nice to have a cage vs a pole. But then you mine as well get a Ronin or Movi. But then it takes an hour to set up. Tough times for stabilization rigs.

I beg to differ. I own this gimbal and its super super awesome. Even with the latest software update it even gives you more ways to control it. Think you definitely need to spend more time with it.

Matti, I am normally a fan of yours, but you did a poor job here. You did not take the time to get the gimbal set up correctly, or get the longer arm for the 1Dx II. You are better than this.

I have the same issue with twisting the handle to get a nice rotating shot. It's really hard to master that and I definitely do wish there was a better way to go about it. I hope to see companies improve the ergonomics of their gimbals soon

ThroughAlyssasEyes - hey TAE, have u tried turning it up side down? You’ll have a few more logistical issues with getting the shot itself, but the gimbal will function easier when it’s inverted as will your hands on the gimbal. Good luck.

@CinematicCut 6 лет назад
Hey Rusty thanks for the reply! What do you mean exactly though? I've seen online that if you connect the gimbal with a Panasonic through a cable you can control focus. BUT... I've seen that the focus is not so smooth during the changes... While pressing this W/T button there is a change in focus but not a smooth one... Do you know anything about that? Because of course my intention is to have a smooth focus while recording, not to fix my focus before every shot ! (I easily do this by touching the actual lens). Let me know your thoughts about it! :) And thanks again for the reply!

Stavros- check out Micro Four Nerds or Focus Media. They both use Crane Gimbals and Panasonic cameras professionally. They can help, I’m just an amateur but I can confirm that the Crane Plus is an Excellent Gimbal !!! All the Crane products far exceed their value to cost.
