Boye hooks are my favorite. I do have some Japanese thread hooks in a little red zip pouch I got as a child when my parents were missionaries in Japan & Okinawa. I treasure those. My Japanese friend taught me to crochet when I was 9.

I was always a Susan Bates girl until I switched to Tulips and never went back. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy watching your hook videos. I think they’re fascinating and so nostalgic. Thanks for sharing.

I used to crochet lace edgings with pearl cotton and threads. I always bent my hooks and had to replace them. Now I use a cushion grip on an aluminum or a steel hook. Its different on lace, Im trying to crochet with yarns now, still don’t like the larger sizes. Cotton isn’t stretchy, wool is. Its different.I doubt my old fingers would be very good on cotton edgings now.

I love Boye hooks. Before I started watching RU-vid I thought everyone just bought yarn and hooks at Walmart or yardsales. 😂 Some of my favorite content creators opened up a whole new world to beautiful new things. (Still going to stick with my Boyes though😂)

I’m mainly a knitter, but this summer I picked up crochet. Haven’t done it since I was a teenager back in the ‘70’s. I remember using Boye’s back then and I went right back to them. Love them!

Just went through bunch of hooks that were my mother’s while watching your video. Found some for your collection (sizes too small for me) . 4 are Boye of which one is size 1-on back is U.S.A.-25 cents. Also found 3 Susan Bates & 4 other interesting old ones . If you are interested I will be happy to send them just need an address. I know you will give them a good home. Enjoy your videos & patterns - you are very talented.

This is so interesting to me. My Grandmother taught me to crochet about 50 years ago, when I was 10. I always remember she used the tiny metal hooks to make beautiful doilies and blankets. I mostly use Susan bates, but I do have one Boye that is a favorite. It's a newer green hook. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on the history of these special hooks! So cool! 😊

You have educated me on hooks and I can’t thank you enough. I’ve some Gems but one I hold dear to my heart, it’s old, chewed up and the head is bent all bcuz I had no idea what it was so any time I crocheted my three year old niece want yarn and hook so, I gave her a Gem (J) which she chewed on after she would wrapped the yarn around it. I kept it bcuz I always show her every time she wants to see my collection…she’s now 18, has no interest in crocheting but love all the things I make her. If I had met you b4, I would have had a ton load of Gems n Heroes. I’ve Boye steel, gun metal n some etched ones. I’ll check my collection for any dups but I’ll help you look for that ‘G’. They’re not enough words to express my thanks for sharing your knowledge with me. Thanks Crystal ❤❤❤❤

When my grandmother passed in 1963 my mother inherited her hooks and hook collection. Since she crocheted and her other sister didn't. When my mother passed away in 1986 I took her collection of hooks. Since I am the only one that crochets. It is a huge collection. I have no idea how many hooks are in it. I don't even look at it. But I know they were my mother and grandmother hooks they used and collected. And they used many of them. My mother used to crochet fine thread cotton bedspreads as orders as well my grandmother. Doilies to match the bedspread. Since I use clover hooks because of my hands I have never used none in the collection. I do know she has gem and hero and others. But I could never use them to work a project. My hands would not allow it.

Hi, Crystal! So nice to see you, listen to your happy voice and your knowledge of crochet and yarn. I have my maternal grandmother’s and my mother’s vintage crochet hooks The grandma’s and mom’s hooks are Boye (stamped). My grandmother’s hooks were steel and from pre-World War I. My mom’s hooks were also steel and post-WW ll, and mine were randomly purchased, depending on my project and aluminum, hence the incomplete collection. I also have a handmade hook made by “nobody knows”. No brand, no size, no markings at all. I also have my grandmother’s ancient 10¢ pattern books that are so worn and flimsy, I don’t try to use them. Thank you so much for sharing with us! 💙💙💙

I collect susan bates vintage hooks. Finding the 4.25mm is difficult since it was discontinued in the 70's. Most people don't know only boye makes that size still. I come across patterns for that size hook and the designers Most likely have no clue anyone using bates hooks don't have this size. Then if they go on the hunt, herrschner's advertises having this hook because they refuse to update their listing despite how many times I've contacted them.

I'm not an "avid" hook collector, but I do have a good collection of vintage hooks. I also cannot use the newer hooks. I can't use the ones with the "ergonomic" handles. I like the vintage inline Susan Bates. I don't just have a collection of them. They are the only ones I use.
