I love Dave's words about cosigning: The bank wants You to cosign for your family/friend, cause the bank did the numbers and found that they will likely NOT pay, but the bank knows You will, and that is why the bank wants you on the loan.

My Gf at the time (many years ago) was not happy with me, since she worked for a tax prep company and I would not let her do my taxes. I was having a firm do my taxes as they have for 20 + years and I was very happy each year what they did for me. I did have a few bank accounts, stock investments, annuities, CDs etc. We eventually broke up anyway.... I think I made a good decision. Different if we were married, but it was not the case. After the breakup, I did not have to worry.....Thank you for this video, keep up the good work.

I never stopped paying on my loan even during forbearance. That's interest-free payments that go straight towards principle. If she hasn't paid anything during this "godsend" of a time, then she is going to nurse this loan forever. Get him off of the loan.

Never co-sign on a loan for a girlfriend or boyfriend, or anyone else you're not married to. Never combine your bank accounts with someone you're not married to. Never buy a house with "roommates" or anyone else you're not married to.

I did it but only once and we didn't live there. And the house was only 70k. It will be paid off in one more year. Fortunately the tenants paid during the moratorium or it might have hurt the friendship. We do have enough in resources to pay it off but the plan was for the tenants to. We were best friends for 30 years before we tried this btw

Boyfriends ex's student loans are boyfriends student loans, which means if they get married they're her student loans... basically, she has to decide if boyfriend is worth it enough to pay off $20K in his ex's student loans, which she absolutely will do should they get married (or stay together for a long time).

Get a new boyfriend. He is bad with money and will make more mistakes in the future. Also, expect to have to pay on the co-signed loan. Studies show that 35-40% of co-signed loans end up with the cosigner having to make some payments

I cosigned on a property that we rented out with my best friend and it worked out. But we lived together 30 years and are like sisters and will leave the other half to her when I go to heaven. I got a second myself and she manages the first and i manage the second. But we only put down 10k each. We couldn't afford to buy in nyc so bought upstate

So glad she mentioned refinance she answered answered question to a different problem a friend of mine has. He co-signed for his ex’s car & now when he wants to buy a car no bank will approve him even with a 1k 2k 3k even a SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLAR DOWNPAYMENT on a 13k-14k car smh. If I didn’t see it in person I’d think was a lie. And the other person is current on her payments. My idea was get her to refinance & get the co-signer removed that way, so this is possible huh? Never co-signing for anyone ever in life lol

The only federal student loans that would need a cosigner are parent plus and plus loans for graduate students and the caller sounds young so the ex probably is too so the ex would have to at least have an undergrad degree. Or the loans are actually private.

The best I can come up with is to offer the ex some cash to seek the refinancing. Even if it's 5k, she may be inclined to re-finance and you call those funds your "stupid tax" for cosigning.

Being a cosigner is a long-term commitment; they’re responsible for your student loan until it’s paid in full. But certain lenders let you apply to have your cosigner released from your private student loan after you’ve graduated, made a certain number of on-time principal and interest payments, and met certain credit requirements. Basically, you need to prove you can pay back the loan on your own. Only the borrower can apply for cosigner release.

Co-signing is never a good idea unless you are ready to pay off the whole balance with your excess cash. Good advice to try a re-fi. As of now, I would assume the 20K is a black hole debt. Option two would be to have her and him make payments.

My concern would be that she only makes the minimum payments on it and in 20years the interest makes it $80k that she then defaults on. I also doubt the ex would re-fi now with the student loan forgiveness stuff still up in the air. I know I would not. After loan forgiveness is officially dead I would offer the ex $1000 to refinance it or something like that to motivate it.

Because anything he pays he can sue her for. And the court system isn't as kind to individuals as some student loan department. Not as cheap either, after fees and interest. 50%. Yeah, ok 😂
