takes out a 250K loan and "doesn't want to be involved in finances at all", are you kidding me? She better be involved in finances 24 hours a day with this mess of a debt! Unbelieveable!

As of today, March 22, 2018, I am 100% debt free. Thank you Dave Ramsey for coming across my life and changing it for the better. I paid off $13k in less than a year and feel great.

His wife probably is earning a PharmD, not a PhD in Pharmacology. He is probably a bit confused since he isn't earning the degree himself.

I am a pharmacist and I can tell you there is a big difference between a pharmacologist and pharmacist. One is a bench research scientist and the later is a clinician.

She won’t be able to practice as a pharmacist with a PhD in pharmacology. She’s a scientist for research and development.

Yikes! I’m a pharmacist (you need a pharmD btw, not a PhD) and I took out half that to pay for grad school. I couldn’t imagine being under that big of a burden. Hopefully she gets on board with the plan to knock the debt out as soon as possible. The interest on that loan must hurt too. I remember when I first graduated and the amount that went towards interest was crazy high and I really felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere. But when you start paying $2k+ a month to debt, you really start gaining traction!

Trust me, when she starts earning $150,000 she'll definitely be involved in their finances. Maybe not in paying off their debt, but definitely in how they spend the money.

$250K debt from student loans. Gets a job,... and 6 years later....."I want to have kids, spend all my time with them, become a full-time SAHM, and enjoy early retirement with my kiddies". Family and friends say: "You go girl!!!! Way to go!!!! Enjoy your children!!!" Man does the same. Family and friends say: "What is wrong with you??? You are crazy!! You are a lazy bum!! Get a job!!!"

The average Pharmacist salary in the US is $120,000. They can live on the husband's salary for 3 years and pay that $250,000 loan off easily.

The average Salary for a PharmD is around 120kish here. 250k in debt is ridiculous!!! My husband makes more as a Master Tradesmen and his current loan debt is zero.

That's not the same as a pharmacy degree. Pharmacology is the science and study behind the making of drugs.

I have a friend who graduated as a pharmacist with 200K in school loans. Went and bought a house for 350K BMW 75K. I don't even want to know what her credit cards are because she buys $300 jeans and 3K for each purse. Someone told her she looked like Kim K which is the result of all of that. It is pretty sad. Her income is 125K.

I feel this guy's pain. This is too much stress for a marriage.

Sad part is she's going to leave him for a Physician.

A Ph.D in pharmacology is not the same thing as a Doctorate of Pharmacy or a Pharm.D which is a pharmacist.

The poor guy and his wife. A PhD in pharmacology will actually NOT allow you to practice as a pharmacist. You need a PharmD for that. PhD is still a research degree. Sure, you can work in drug creation / pharma companies doing research and still make money, but it's not a pharmacist.

He doesnt know it but he is getting divorced. She will finish school, petition for divorce, then her $250k debt becomes $125k debt, after the divorce is finalized/settled, she gets her pharmacist job.

A PhD costs nothing in Australia (for Australian citizens, of course).....they are fully funded by the federal government.....any PhD; no exceptions. I have a PhD i Human Resource Management and didn't spend a cent. I was shocked and appalled that in such a rich country it costs so much to get ahead. Smart countries need PhDs, governments should fund them because the whole society benefits from having smart people in the economy. And, if they are fully funded, then your socio-economic background is no barrier to studying (i.e. PhDs are not just for the already advantaged). Furthermore, because so few people get to do a PhD it is not expensive for a government to fund the program (unlike funding bachelor degrees, for example). The US spends trillions on wars and lets its most bright people sink into a financial hole....doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

She will come out making over $100,000. That plus $55,000 puts them in the $155k to 175k range. It's still a massive massive debt though but if they buckle down they can clear it in 4 years.

Pharmacists used to be virtually guaranteed a job when they got out of school due to a lack of pharmacists. In my area, they have opened more schools and there is no shortage in fact they were weeding out the older pharmacists that were making more money and were used to doing things a certain way. People think a pharmacy job is easy "all you do is count pills"you even have helpers to count the pills for you. It is a very stressful job and it seems to be getting worse all the time. It is a combination of the silliest petty problems that can get you fired and mistakes that literally can kill people. I think anyone wanting to go into pharmacy school should work in a high-volume pharmacy first to see what the pharmacist goes through.

Well she can handle it average salery is about 126k annually. So she could pay that off in probably 5 years.

If he divorces her making over twice what he does, he'll be able to get alimony. Alimony cuts both ways legally. Pretty sure it doesn't care about your debt either. Cash out on the wife as soon as possible.

One of my cousins supported her husband through medical school. As soon as he finished he filed for divorce. He had to pay the student loans but she got stuck with the credit cards debts she took out to pay for life plus their two kids

That's a lot of money for a degree although it's a doctorate. I've heard that some doctoral candidates (depending on program of course) are able to get their tuition waived if they work as a Teaching Assistant.

This will not end well if the wife will be earning more than him in the future. Pharmacologist is not similar to pharmacist. I feel bad for the husband and I can almost predict the future but I hope I am wrong.

5 minutes into the video and I realized people need to get a second opinion after talking To Dave. If your a student or prospective student definitely talk to some transfer and academic advisors at your school. My community college talks to prospective students. Definitely find someone who knows something about what your going into and your situation

I think he meant PharmD. Not PhD., but I get why he was confused. It confused me when this was changed and I am still not sure what letters go behind the earners name.

I believe that with a Phd in Pharmacy allows you to do drug research into developing new drugs. You don't need that to be a pharmacist. One of my roommates 30 years was getting a Phd in Pharmacy but she was working full time as a pharmacist at the time and doing the Phd part time.

My wife is thinking about going to optometry school after her military career. Even with the gi bill There’s a chance we could owe 100,000 after she graduates. It’s hard to think about because neither of us like debt.

This is an example why you wait to get married. I get the impression they never sat down and discussed finances before. He should have waited till she finished school and she cleared out her debt.

If she has PhD in that field , she can apply research and develop job in pharmaceutical company, they pay a lot for that. Much more than a pharmacist.

I wasn't aware how wide spread student loan debt is. Of course it makes sense. Banks have always had lending standards. When millions of students who tend to be younger can borrow money as they see fit, then obviously your going to have hundreds of thousands of deliquent loans.
