My Brush Hog is Shaking Like it's the End of the World

I get a fair amount of questions about brush cutter vibration, as do service managers anywhere they're sold. The general situation is, a person has been brush hogging, they hit a big rock or log, there's a tremendous racket, they turn off the PTO and drive away from the obstruction. Then, they get ready to cut again, kick in their PTO and the cutter shakes violently. It's such a scary situation they'll usually turn off the tractor and run away, convinced they're completely destroyed something. Usually its a real easy fix.
What's happened is pretty simple. The blades pivot on big bolts, and one of them is nicely tucked under another one. It will literally make the cutter and tractor shake so badly that you may think the world has come to an end. All you have to do is get them separated, be prepared to use a good sized hammer.
The machine can also shake if the shaft that the blade pan attaches to gets wollered out. "Wollered" may be a word that only those of us of Appalachian descent folks what means. Basically if the splines get worn to the point that allows up and down movement of the blade pan, you're going to get a good vibration. The same can also happen when a U-joint on a PTO shaft gets worn out.
Regardless of what the source of vibration is on a brush hog, it's a sign of a problem and shouldn't be ignored. I've actually seen cracks in the welding on the top of the deck mainframe that were caused by continuing to run the machine after a vibration started. You don't want to get to that point.
Also in this video we discuss the stump jumper. That's a big disk that the blades spin from that helps guide the cutter over a stump if one is encountered in the field, versus hitting them straight on. If you're cutting big open fields with no possibility of finding hidden stumps, you don't need to worry whether the cutter has one or not. With me, going into the timber a lot, I need that stump jumper.

Thanks guys for the excellent information. You answered my question about the wobble within my bushhog going to tractor pto. The bearings are worn out and the reservoir was empty. Learn as you go.

Thanks Mike, this helped me troubleshoot my brush hog issue.

I might add, and you've mentioned it, the gearbox mounting bolts should be checked for security as well in the event of vibration. Good points.

Yep. Just started brush hogging for the year. Vibrating too much. Didn’t do anything different than end of season, checked blades, one a little gummed up with old weeds. Cleared It out, put a. Little grease. No vibration. Off we go. Thanks.

Sometimes the gearbox’s bolts can come loose from the deck so always keep an eye on them and keep them tight!

Tractor Mike - You forgot that it may have lost a blade or broke a blade. Also, if the blades get a foreign object wrapped around them! This could cause a vibration! I had experience with a stray water hose that was left out in the barn yard and it was picked up by the blades in the tall grass. You have did previous videos I know. But still, a new tractor owner might not know!

How about some information about fixing the gearbox and testing the u-joint ?

Curious to know how much up and down movement to expect where the blades meet the stump jumper

grass builds up between the blade and bolt preventing the blades to spin, how do I prevent that from happening?

I did a weld repair on my stump jumper, I had cracks around the holes where the bolts hold the blades. I removed the blades, welded and ground them, then took 2 pieces of . 065 ( both 6"x6" square) punched a hole and welded those over the fixed area. On reassembly, I have a little wobble through the steering wheel. What's the best way to balance?

Can a PTO shaft between the tractor and gear box that has play in the slide cause a bad vibration too? Just wondering if mine is the blades are uneven and/or the shaft is too loose where they slide in and out of one another? thx

Is there a certain way to time the two blades or gearboxes so they don't hit each other or cause a vibration

The castle nut pin can come out and the castle nut can back off and let the stump jumper wobble too

How much vibration is too much? I have a pretty good vibration that seems to mostly dissipate after getting cutter up to speed and while cutting. But it’s definitely noticeable when first starting. Any insights? Thanks, as always, for the helpful info!

That sounds normal. Things shake a bunch as the blade pan and blades get up to speed.

I have an issue with my Brush Hog. It has less than 10 hours on it and it is new. I have a vibration issue. I checked the blades and they were not moving around freely. They seemed like they were too tight. I will find out this weekend if something is caught under the blades. I don't know yet though.

My bush hog is scalloping (cutting lower on one side). Is this due to an inbalance?

I have a 10 foot rotary cutter by Kodiak it’s borrowed the blades are interfering with each other, I am bolted one of the driveshaft and rotated it half but it still seems to line up should the two blades come together at all or is the blades that are on or too long?
@TractorMike

The blades should not contact each other. That'll make a heckuva racket when you engage the PTO. Sounds to me like the wrong blades.

We’ve had a seal go bad on our old HX15, oil leaked out. Killed the lower output bearing but instead of a vibration it snapped the bolt holding the stump jumper on and the whole stump jumper and blades fell off. Luckily I shut it off quick, and with new bearings, seals, and a new bolt it was good to go.

My JD MX6 is wobbling bag. The pto clutch is Hitting the housing. I pulled the stump jumper and can't find much damage. Mayne the blades are damaged. I will buy new ones. Can the gearbox be replaced?
@TractorMike

Yeah, but they're pricey! When you figure labor and everything it doesn't take long to get a big chunk of the price of a new cutter in an old one. Maybe time to trade?

blades sharpened unevenly will cause a vibration.
