My buying & wearing experience after 6 months: A.Lange & Söhne Odysseus in stainless steel

In February, I bought myself an A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus in stainless steel - which makes me one of the lucky few…
Beyond some wrist shots on Instagram, and some brief, initial thoughts shared there’s an absence of actual owners who have taken the time to go into any detail and to share their personal experiences of buying, owning and wearing an Odysseus, over time.
And as someone who loves watches, I had many questions and there were many things that I wondered about BEFORE deciding to buy the Odysseus and then many more questions before I’d had a chance to spend any real time wearing it.
So having bought, lived with & now worn the Odysseus in stainless steel for around 6 months, I thought I’d make my first RU-vid video to talk about the things that I wanted to know and also what it’s like to own one…
By way of introduction, I’m just a guy who loves watches. I’m an amateur. A private watch enthusiast - hence my Instagram account @watchenthusiastlondon
I’m not a blogger & I certainly don’t have any fancy equipment; to make this video I have copied footage and images used by others - I hope they’ll forgive me - alongside some of my own.
In this video I’m going to talk about my own personal experiences as an owner. For ease of reference, there’s an index in the description below under broad topic headings, so you can go directly to the sections that interest you most.

when you said "it's a bit daft to be this excited at my age"...I had to reflect. I just got my first dream watch - albeit at a much different place in the hierarchy (Breitling Classic AVI) - I'm 38 and I couldn't sleep the night before I picked it up. It was Christmas in 1992 all over again. I wasn't self-conscious about it, I was happy that anything could make me feel like that again. It's important. cultivate that feeling whenever you can, no matter your age or gender or circumstances or whatever it is. I appreciate your channel because you seem like a very grounded dude with a real interest in high horology. A lot of high-end collectors seem utterly dispassionate and treat the hobby like a job, or the watches themselves purely as investments. It makes me bitter that I'll never as rich as them, because in a sense the experience is wasted on them. that I feel so much more for my dinky little Breitling than they do for their fifteenth hype-beast Royal Oak iteration is very hard to grapple with. You seem like you really appreciate these things. there's no shame in that.

thank you. I think RU-vid permits the narrative to be visually enhanced & I preferred this to the audio only option… In all honesty, I’m not quite sure how to move forward with this “channel”. I only ever wanted to release the one video about the Odysseus - mainly because nobody else had and I would have wanted to engorge myself on such content prior to buying / owning mine - but I have since made a second video about an unfortunate experience. What next ? Still having a think about it but don’t just want to release videos willy nilly…

@@watchenthusiastlondon Honestly I would really value a video detailing how to get to a place in your life where you can make these types of purchases responsibly. I just purchased a Grand Seiko Hi-Beat GMT, and while I totally adore it, it represents about 10% of my annual income; it's hard to imagine getting to a place in my life or career where I could ever imagine being able to even inquire about a watch as incredible as the Odysseus. Any tips and tricks on time management, self-optimization, lifestyle habits and How to Succeed in Business (Without Really Trying)? Thank you sir, love your content so I subscribed!

In my 25 years watch collecting and 15 years spent almost everyday with any watch channel in RU-vid, this has been one of the finest review I have come across. I simply never felt bored of listening because all the points brought was highly relevant for this watch. Sorry to know the London boutique but I beleive after seeing this review they ought to make you in short list for any Lange requested. Great review. Enjoy your watch....

I know it got some negative comments when it was first released, but it really is a distinctive and nice looking watch. As far as I'm concerned, A. Lang & Sohne makes better watches than any of the holy trinity. I don't know if I'll ever be able to own one, but I certainly appreciate seeing videos of them.

Another thorough and enjoyable review, from purchase to personal wearing experience. The fact that you are an owner rather than a reviewer talking about a borrowed timepiece makes it all the better. It was interesting to hear you comment on the wearing experience of the stainless steel model, simply because of its weight. I was lucky enough to attend a Rolex event recently, where the Rolex sales manager explained how long it had taken the manufacture to perfect the fluted bezel of its new platinum day-date. When the watch was passed around for inspection, the only thing anyone mentioned was how heavy and substantial it was; sometimes heft trumps horology! Looking forward to more reviews on your other watches. 😊
@watchenthusiastlondon
@watchenthusiastlondon Год назад
Thank you. And yes, heft on the wrist can play a key part in the wearers enjoyment. Whilst I don’t want an overly heavy watch on my wrist, I still tend to prefer stainless steel to their titanium counterparts.

I have to say I love your channel! Your narration is impeccable and to a higher standard than pretty much all other channels. I assume you do some voice over work? In regards to waiting lists and not being able to purchase, unfortunately that’s the nature of haute luxury. Try to go into Hermes, Goyard, Chanel etc and try to buy a bag on the spot. Or a Ferrari for that matter. Sadly luxury is often confused for convenience however I’m really glad you’ve got the watch now and that you’re enjoying it! ps the 5172G looks amazing 🤩 Isn’t it funny how compelling timepieces can be to us and at different times ? It’s not always a constant feeling but instead it changes shape. From one watch to the next. Whilst I love all my watches, I am drawn to some more than others, at different times, and often because I (re)discover / (re) appreciate things about them… Hopefully that doesn’t sound completely bonkers and you will be able to relate. Either way, enjoy !

(I don't comment very often.) I thought it was interesting that the RU-vid recommendation engine recommended your video to me. I thought, this channel is small, the channel only has two videos, the video is long, and it doesn't have a break-out number of views. I wonder why they surfaced this video for/to me? (I'm subscribed to many watch channels and watch a lot of watch videos. So, RU-vid knows my interests well. I searched my history for Lange videos and came up with about 6 that had some Lange mention.) So, I watched it. The algorithm was spot on. I really liked it and learned a lot. Thank you.

Beautifully told tale of how carefully crafted luxury items are teased into the psyche of those attracted to their siren call. One I have answered and know well if not at the level of this particular coveted item. Ferrari in particular wrote the book on this phenomena when Luca Di Montezemolo took over Ferrari and transformed their selling model to this approach. If you want to buy one of their latest, greatest, limited edition cars you must qualify by having purchased numerous other of their special editions. Of course you have the very special one of a tiny number that signals you have arrived, literally and figuratively. Congratulations.

Great video and really enjoyed it. I own the the white gold version which I love but it does have a drawback in my humble opinion. Given the heft of white gold I feel its not balanced on my wrist and could really use a folding clasp. When wearing my Rolex watches on the Oysterflex they feel balanced. That being said on a recent Zoom with the folks from Lange the folding clasp will soon be available. Just ordered my 4th Lange and counting days until its arrival. I ordered the platinum double split 1815 and told it will be here in Jan. Keep up the great videos and enjoy your Odysseus.

Very interesting feedback on the white gold Odysseus. Did Lange link the folding clasp to the imbalance on wrist ? Hope it feels better thereafter… and wow to your new timepiece 😍

@@watchenthusiastlondon I am not sure they did but can assume I am not only person to make the suggestion. 1 of the only things that bother me about Lange( this is minor and I man in LOVE with brand) is insisting on pin buckle straps on extremely heavy pieces. For example I own the Datograph perpetual and Zeitwerk striking time. Both pieces I requested they come with a folding clasp in matching metals and they always quickly agreed at no extra cost. I did have the pleasure to have diner with the CEO recently and very politely mentioned this. Later in that diner, a few glasses of winer later, I said I would love to see the Odysseus with high complications ( chrono with GMT perhaps). Doubt my suggestion will go very far but I bet we do see some complications soon added to the Odysseus. Look forward to next video .

Quite a journey. Well spoken, there are obvious clues the boutique marked you for your Lange’s. I dearly love the brand and appreciate your story. I’ve also have the opportunity to try on the SS and white gold rubber strap. I love the SS version. Thank-you for posting. I sincerely appreciate your experience.

My pleasure. I just want to share my experiences with those who, like me might have many of the same questions. I deliberated whether to make a video; that my first attempt is appreciated by you makes it all worthwhile. Thank you 🙏

I was very attracted to it when I first saw a review on YT. When I inquired about a purchase, the Miami store informed me that a $26K+ purchase was necessary to be waitlisted. My friend who runs a store that sells AL&S in a Las Vegas hotel informed me that a purchase history of over $400K is now a requirement, as only collectors are considered. This store had never seen one.
