I'm bi and the fact that people insist Marvin's the same (and not gay) is massively erasing to the amount of gay men who had to force themselves to go through straight marriages because homosexuality was illegal or incredibly unacceptable at the time
someone: in trousers proves that marvin is bi because he's clearly a horndog for ms. goldberg and- me: *crawls from the deep recesses of hell and plays this song as loudly as possible*
his whole relationship with miss goldberg was based off admiration and power that he had/wanted to have over her (e.g her giving into his demands to play Colombus), and him miscontruing those feelings as romantic/sexual interest. even when he "raped" her he wasn't interested in her at all, only her glasses.
@I may have a small dick, but and ms Goldberg was a mentor to Marvin not romantic interest set those sails was basically explaining the worlds gonna be hard on Marvin
@@yearstoolong it's not comphet tho, marvin straight up doesn't like ms.goldberg. he thinks he loves her cause she's his perfect sense of womanhood but literally he's just trying to convince himself he's not gay
@@damon3621 That is what comphet is. He has that understanding that hes supposed to be with a woman, ms goldberg is the perfect sense of womanhood to fill that role for him. Comphet can look like idolising the opposite sex because they fill that role for you.
@@iitscheyanne it was him trying to convince himself he wasn’t into the highschool girls because he was into OLDER woman but it was just him trying to convince himself
For everyone who thinks Marvin is bi it's normal for gay people to force themselves to love girls especially back then it's called suppressing your sexuality.
I find this song very empowering. He has played a lie all his life and this is a key point of the story where he's decided to get what he wants, and screw the rules. That's why I love Marvin's character so much.
I think the lyric about cutting her lip on the sofa doesn't have any deep symbolic meaning at all because immediately afterwards he says "that's it for girls." It's as if he's looking for any excuse to break up with her, and the slightest turn off of cutting her lip sends him over the edge. "The sofa was blue before" she bleeds on the couch and it grosses him out reminding him how much he doesn't like girls.
I love the "I played a game" line because you can see the clear connection to the constant theme in Falsettos of love being a game, especially when we see how this thinking affects Whizzer in The Games I Play. William Finn truly is a genius.
“For everyone saying marvin in bi, this song proves he’s not” YES BUT also him hypersexualizing mrs Goldberg is a very common thing for gay kids to do, to over sexualize a woman in hope they will actually be attracted to women.
Ingrid Cozby oh yeah definitely, but there's actually falsettos fans who wholeheartedly believe marv is bi and will deadass harass people who call him gay because it's, in their words, "bi erasure" \':
Yeah ikr? Like I'm bi but erasing the fact that Marvin is strictly gay is unacceptable. I also don't understand why ppl want him to be?? Bc that erases a huge part of his story
@@swampmonstersquibby2563 compulsive heterosexual is the extended version of comphet. yknow... when a gay person. engages in compulsive heterosexual behaviour. because of societal standards and internalised homophobia.
yes. because bisexuals dont like girls. makes sense (sorry i dont wanna sound mean but being bi myself i know marvs gay, hes legit saying he doesnt like girls)
[THE LADIES] Relax Relax Relax Relax Relax Relax Relax [HIS SWEETHEART, spoken] Relax, Marvin [MARVIN] Here's my chance To survive the night There's nothing special about it If I try to go to sleep, I might But the phone will ring I had a girl She cut her lip on the sofa by the door The sofa was blue before That's it for girls That's it for girls Here's my chance To survive To survive the night Here's a dance I might try to make I'm not so lucid about it But I'm sure of the path that the arms must take And the feet don't move I found a word It was a queer little thing with lots of regret I had a way with words, and yet I'm through with words That's it for words Here's my chance To survive To survive the night Here's my chance To survive To survive the night To survive the day To survive my life In the most very natural Most unremarkable way I played a game She was as cute as a dime and couldn't spell I asked her to spell my name That's it for girls That's it for girls That's it for girls That's it, that's it, that's it for girls That's it, that's it, that's it for girls Here is my chance To survive To survive the night Here's my chance To survive To survive the night Here's my chance To survive Survive Survive Survive To survive the night
I know “I played a game / she was as cute as a dime and couldn’t spell / I asked her to spell my name / That’s it for girls” is a reference to how Marvin would look for any reason not to be with a girl ("Oh, if she can't spell my name I'll leave her", fully knowing she can't spell, and so forth) but I choose to believe that he simply embarrassed himself SO badly one time that he decided to never speak to a woman again
attention in trousers fans: i need in trousers friends and it's virtually impossible to find them out in the wild so if you need someone to freak out about it with pls reply to this comment
Do you reckon that the ‘Word’ is whizzer? OR alternatively is it Marvin’s own homosexuality? I question jf it’s whizzer because not only is the word not referred to as a girl or she/her pronouns but it is also referred to as a queer little thing
This might be an awful interpretation but I figured it was about him discovering the term ‘homosexuality’ (or something of that nature) and immediately identifying with the label, but at the same time feeling this overwhelming shame and regret because of it. So when he says “that’s it for words” it’s like he’s saying he doesn’t want to acknowledge it? Or maybe he means he’s still afraid to verbalize to his feelings (i.e. come out), even after finding a label that fits him? I may be missing something here but that’s what I came up with
My interpretation! Within the context of this song being about how he’s kind of resigned himself to girls but also being done with them at this point I think he is still with trinna or still presenting straight so TO ME when he says he found a word full of regret it reads as he now knows about his own queerness but doesn’t feel able to do anything about it. He’s full of regret because of his decisions to be with women like sweetheart and trinna.
Okay I know Anthony Rosenthal is older than me and is part of the hecking sister musical/revival but it honestly disturbs me that he knows about this Like ???you're so pure??? Stop it???
Regality Why? I think it shows great maturity that he actually took the time to watch and listen to In Trousers. I would let my 14 year old watch it too. It’s really not all that inappropriate. ESPECIALLY not this song. This song is beautiful and is not even a little bit inappropriate.
not to sound hostile or anything, but you all do realize that he’s a teenager right? like most teenagers have seen things that are much worse, in this there’s not even anything bad?and no one is “pure,” especially at his age and i guarantee you that any 14 year old would know what whizzer going down means. i’m sorry if this sounds mean lmao, and that i’m responding to a year old comment
sam h bro preach lI hate it when people automatically assume that a person is completely innocent with no knowledge of literally anything or should be just because they’re a teenager
Here's the thing, William Finn kinda contradict himself: He described Marvin in the in trousers book as bisexual, but he describes Marvin in the musicals as, well, a homosexual. (At least in Falsettos it's more present this theme) So, guys, stop saying that people that have either view of Marvin's character is wrong, because sexuality is a fluid thing. Maybe Marvin could've felt in his younger years that he was Bi, but then felt like he was more on the gay side. Or maybe he was always gay, maybe he's still bisexual. In trousers is a more poetic musical, so take it's word more softly, be open for different interpretations!
I read the in trousers book online somewhere, and I don’t remember him being referred to as bisexual there? I’m not trying to argue I’m just curious which part(s) refer to him as bi.
wdym in trousers book? like the script? i dont know of an in trousers book but i know 4 a fact william finn would never call marvin bisexual as he has described marvin as a gay man. plus he has never loved women. if you’re referring 2 the in trousers script then he has definitely not said marvin is bisexual as sexualities arent specifically named in the script (as it was the 80s)
Aly H i’m not assuming. even though you thought you were straight, you were never straight. you were always attracted to women whether you knew it or not. so the song has always belonged to you.
goddamn you’re missing the point. don’t block people from our community, welcome them to learn about it. through guarding media we only leave people out and accomplish NOTHING. every single person deserves to listen to the musical. it doesn’t belong to us. william finn wouldn’t want that. he didn’t write 25th annual just for little kids. everyone can get messages out of songs, everyone can learn about communities and struggles through a story. sure, straight people might not relate to what this song is about, but that is okay!
Uh, y'all talking about him saying 'that's it for girls'. He also said 'that's it for words', yet he's still talking ?? so, shut ya mouths and stop assuming his sexuality lmaooo
