I wasn't even part of the 'emo' movement, or anything even close. I simply thought this band had some of the greatest instrumentation & theatrics I've ever heard. It blows my mind to this day that people could call any of MCR's music "shitty" or "uninspired".

People say Mama is a haunting tune, I say this is oddly more haunting...I just can't explain why it just has this....atmosphere to it. EDIT: Bro, this comment is 5 years old, how am I still getting replies? EDIT 2: 7 years later and somehow this comment is still getting attention. 6.2k likes on something I typed on a whim as a teen who didn’t know how to explain his feelings all to well is wild. Since then I’ve listened to this song live and let me tell you something: it was worth the COVID. Why does no one ever talk about this song. it's one if the saddest in my opinion (they're all sad to me, but that's aside the point) it makes me cry every time.

Whats incredibly haunting about this song is that towards the end you can faintly here Gerard screaming "Wake Up". When I first heard it I had to stop for a bit and take a break, its insane.

This song is so underrated. I think it's a well-composed song, and it's actually one of my favourites right now. MCR was a great band, but they've all gone their separate ways. Be happy for the band members.

My dad lived through the 60's, he was part of the stoner hippie movement and has seen so many classic rock bands in concert. He accompanied me and my bff at the time to an MCR concert during this era and it was the greatest night of my Life. My dad said that it was one of the best shows he's ever seen. It was so theatrical, he's said. Gerard coming out on a stretcher was awesome. He loved it when he thought it was gonna suck

Just came to the realization that Gerard sounds different in each album. Like he sounds like Gerard, but he sounds so sad in all of them except Danger Days like he’s just like “sad sad sad sad” and then in Danger Days he’s like “OMG I HAS KID NOW LETS BECOME K-POP AND EMO AT THE SAME TIME!”

I fucking LOVE the instrumental in this one, the song is so great and so underrated

this song is so incredibly cathartic to me as an ICU nurse who worked through the pandemic and has some trauma from that. the beginning when he talks about his terrors, the lyrics "a drink for the horror that i'm in", just wanting to sleep, the end when he sees flames and people he loves dying, and that he can't ever wake up. his visceral screams at the end. that's how i felt the past 2 years. i'm glad i'm on the other side now but this song always brings back those emotions. i love it so much.

I have to wear uniforms at my school, if we didn't, it would wear all my MCR gear on Monday :(

i have a thread in my twitter drafts that i never posted about why this is the saddest mcr song. i will now copy and paste it here. ‪whenever i listen to sleep by my chemical romance, like REALLY listen to it, i just start crying and i don’t even realize it. when you REALLY listen to it you realize how sad it is. it’s like he’s telling this story of all the awful things he’s done but he doesn’t feel bad about ‪it and he realizes that he’s turned into this monster and he’s screaming at himself to wake up and change and stop doing all these horrible things. by “horrible things,” i mean maybe he’s murdered people. not gerard, obviously, just this character. the entire black parade album follows the story of this guy and the whole main is death. when he says “shut your eyes, kiss me goodbye and sleep” i think this character is killing someone. anyways, that song is truly like a knife in the heart and it genuinely hurts, especially since it’s after ‪the song mama where he’s basically just going insane and he’s turning into this psychopath saying that “what’s the point in trying to be good because we all go to hell anyways” and it really just stabs you in the heart and comes through the other side. ‪the fact that you can barely hear him screaming “wake up” at the end is what makes it the most heartbreaking song mcr has ever released. it shows that his helpless screams in his mind are being drowned out and buried underneath all these insane and horrible thoughts. ‪he’s saying that people are crying for him thinking about what he’s become and he doesn’t understand how they could because he’s turned into this awful person and he says that he doesn’t feel bad about it and that he’s numb but deep down he is suffering and he wants to change. ‪he’s in this torturous nightmare that he’s created for himself and he can’t find a way to wake up and he is absolutely terrified. ‬ yep that was my unposted twitter thread ty for reading

This song used to scare the crap out of me. The first time i heard it was on an iPod nano i found at a vintage shop, when i bought it, after it charged i saw it was already loaded with a ton of music i liked at the time from the previous owner, stuff like blink 182, taking back sunday, my chemical romance, etc. And one night i fell asleep with only 1 ear bud in while it was playing. I hadn't heard the black parade album in its entirety at the time yet. I was waken up in the middle of the night and Sleep was playing but since i had only 1 earbud in, i could only hear the beginning dialogue without the piano, and i thought someone was plotting out side of my door through walkie talkies, then the drums kicked in and i was so relieved

having sleep paralysis again, along with false awakenings. i had a hard time sleeping last night because of insomnia. immediately listened to this right after i woke up, this song helped me remove some of the fear i felt. thank you mcr for creating this song, it calms me so much.

This is such an underrated but great song.

I remember being 11 and listening to this song wishing that I could "just sleep" for the eternity. My interpretation of this song was always that it was telling a story of someone that was giving up on their life and letting themselves just die. It resonated with me back then, as I was just developing depression - I too would have liked to shut my eyes and sleep and never wake up. I never realised he was screaming "wake up" until recently, like he is trying to fight against the part that wants to die. Maybe I subconsciously heard it back then? Who knows. But now any time I feel like life isn't worth the struggle I play this song just to hear that scream, that desperate WAKE UP that tells me not to give up. I might feel awful sometimes, but I survived and keep on surviving. I guess they were right when they said "you only hear the music when your heart begins to break". I designed a tattoo based on this song and I'm going to get it done on the only scar that's left from those dark times as a reminder to keep on going even when I wish to just sleep.

This is my favorite MCR song and I finally learned how to play it on guitar. I just love the haunting atmosphere from this song...
