I don't agree. Sounds like one of the necessities of the job is to have reliable transportation. It was this kids CHOICE to go buy the truck. He should have realized that he didn't have the requirements in a vehicle needed to do the job so he should have moved on. They pay the insurance and some "minimum payment". Essentially he's getting a stipend for the truck. Yes he went into debt for the truck but they're paying for it every month. Its dangerous if he quits or gets fire, but if its stable and he's there long term he essentially gets a free truck. I think this entire clip missed that point.
@PanchoSmitty1122
@PanchoSmitty1122 2 года назад
They pay insurance and a mileage per diem which is basically they take all the gas prices in the area, average the cheapest ones and pay him for 75% of his travel. This is part of his total income, so his base is probably somewhere in the 18-20k range when that’s accounted for. That’s why Dave was saying he’s paying them to work there because once taxes, bills, and groceries are accounted for his annual savings is probably $5k or less.
@Sizukun1
@Sizukun1 2 года назад
@@PanchoSmitty1122 Not sure where you're making those assumptions. Many companies default to the 56 cents per mile IRS number, I know someone working for oil companies that get paid $1.50 per mile without a stipend for their vehicle because it isn't explicitly used for work. I'd say we probably didn't get enough information, but this isn't uncommon for field workers like this and so very rarely do they actually pay extra just to work at their own job.

Yah, I disagree. I think the mileage reimbursement is greater then what the IRA allows since it is a truck. I have never heard of a monthly sum and then low mileage reimbursement when you are using your own car. But even at 60 cents that is $36k per year.

He also said they paid him for the minimum payment so he isn't really paying for the truck himself. Not sure why he's adding his own money to it. The obvious downside is that if he gets fired or laid off then he will be responsible for the balance on the truck.

The rate for mileage reimbursement is set by law. As of 1-1-21 it was $0.56 per mile. I'm wondering if he really wanted the job but was told he needed a reliable vehicle and the employer helped him out. Regardless, if he can't afford this it isn't the employer's fault.

I listened to this twice. The company makes a minimum payment on the truck, not sure what that means. Then about $2900 a month in mileage reimbursement making $35K a year. Is that the total income via having his own truck or does he still get a salary? Is he considered a contractor and then must pay his own employment taxes? Too many details are missing to make this clear to me. I would go for the lease to own land. Rent is just money down the drain. With that said this needs to be a legit deal with an attorney looking over the contract because you’re going to put 5k in to make the cabin livable. I’m guessing they have family and that’s why they don’t want to leave. So someone needs to babysit for free so wife can continue part time work. Just don’t buy that baby everything under the sun and save every penny that you can. Most Americans can’t come up with $400 and you’re far ahead of that.
