Even taking money as a gift from family can get messy. I was given a gift by my mom and was told I didn’t have to pay it back. But within the year she started holding it over me that I owed her. She wanted me to pay back the money in full and keep a bunch of her other conditions. Such as letting her have the right to store stuff in my garage that she didn’t have the space for at her own house. So I wouldn’t even take a large gift from family members! Not worth it!

I think that would be the tough part for me... It's a respect thing. On some level it's not really about the money... it's about the fact that somebody close to you took advantage of you, manipulated you, used you.. and doesn't respect you or value you enough to hold up their end of the deal. I don't care if it's $20 bucks, or 20 grand. If somebody says they will pay you back... and then they choose not to. That tells me all I need to know about that person, and it's honestly not somebody I want to be around any way.

It’s unfortunate that money could end a relationship with relatives. It’s not worth it 💔 I have “lent” money family before but in my mind I decided it was a gift. If they paid back, sweet. If they didn’t pay back, it would be forgotten. I figured if a family can’t pay me back, they have bigger problems and need some help
