I’m a professional stylist and I could tell during your blow dry, you were going to probably get heat damage. When your hair is not thoroughly cleaned and there is still a lot of product in the hair, you’re bound to get heat damage. All that smoke during your blow dry was indicative of too much product in your hair. If you are using thick oils and creams in your hair when it is curly, it is hard to get a lot of that product out of the hair. I don’t know if this was your case, but it’s just some ideas. I’m sorry this happened to you 😰. Next time tho, don’t cut your hair with paper scissors, you need professional hair shears. Paper scissors cause further damage to the hair with unnecessary split ends. You look beautiful with the short cut 💇🏾‍♀️

They didn't clarify her hair well or at all. I don't know. They smoke is coming from the product build-up on her hair. It makes the hair heavy and greasy looking. Maybe the heat was too high also. If you have fine hair, your heat should be so high.

I’m So glad that as a black woman you definitely understood the “it’s hair it’ll grow back “ , as a community we need to help other women understand that the length of your hair means nothing if it’s lifeless and damaged . Let it go !!! trust me cutting off my hair was amazing I didn’t even know my hair can curl fr . Y’all would literally see and feel how healthy and strong our hair can be if y’all just let go and understand the length of your hair , or having hair period really doesn’t define who you are !

I have been natural for a while and 5 years ago I had my hair straightened once a hairdressers that dealt with natural hair as well as relaxed and weaves. I ended up with heat damage. Till this day I am not sure if a heat protectant was used. Some people are lucky they can get away with it. I learnt a huge lesson straight hair is not worth it. Since then I have vowed not to straighten my hair not even blow drying. I still use hooded dryers and diffusers. I have mastered the wash and go and other styles and my hair is longer and stronger. I know people who have straightened their natural hair multiple times and eventually heat train their hair in other words they get heat damage. So I choose not to risk it. You look like a model with your TWA . Don't worry your hair will grow back stronger. Enjoy this new journey.

Silk press was a once a year 'treat' and this never happened before, this one turned into a nightmare. My hair was finally long and healthy. Trying to salvage what is lost but I know I will eventually have to cut it because it is severe. I know that the hair has already been cut and it is beautiful - I would like to add that I’m a hairstylist for over a decade and truthfully I didn’t think the damage to the hair warranted a complete cut . I think a few weeks of regular washing and conditioning with protein and hydrating treatments would have allowed the natural bonds in the hair to return to the original state. Heat styling physically changes the physical bonds within the hair that cause it to curl . Sometimes , just wetting it one or two times after a heat style is not enough to revive it . It may take several washes for the PH level to reach what they were before heat styling and introduction of smoothing products. I recommend doing several clarifying shampoos and an intense oil treatment to really remove all product and allow the hair to become really fully saturated with moisture .

A silk press uses heat plus silicones/heat protectants. Heat should be no higher than than 450F because this is the temperature at which hair gets irreversibly damaged. If you suspect you have heat damage: 1. Do at least two shampoos with a clarifying shampoo to revert. Some of these heat protectant and silicone products are designed to stay in your hair for multiple washes. 2. Use bond repairers, not protein treatments. K18 for the internal structure of your hair, Olaplex or Curlsmith for the cortex (middle) and then PCA bond repairer for the cuticle (outside). You might need multiple washes/uses. Cut as a last resort.

I have heard of many women going to these “natural salons” and getting heat damage. You have to ask for before and after pics of clients honestly to be perfectly in the safe zone. You are lucky to find a good stylist. Once you find one, stick to him and her. Because the only person I know that hair bounces back is a woman that does it her own. I’m a licensed cosmetologist and I don’t trust anyone else but my self because everyone is getting heat damage but I don’t feel the need to straighten my hair. When I do it, I will definitely do it myself so I don’t have to blame anybody. Because most just care about sleek results and not the health of your hair 💯 In class we are taught to straighten and chemically treat the hair and not preserving the curls we have. Now you can pay for a course but many won’t and will just learn how to avoid things by testing clients.

@@curlynella1011 very good points. I've been going to the same salon since I was in high school. I've learned so much from her (she owns her business) and she treats the whole process as teachable moments. She helped me become fully natural (and embrace my 4C hair) It's really good to have this info before consultations so you can ask the right questions and judge if the stylist is right for you. I'm just now getting back to taking cafe of it and I'm happier than ever because even after ignoring my hair the damage somehow grew out and my curls have returned to their natural state and my hair is back to where it was before the damage, 10-11.5 inches all around. But girl .... You are stunningly gorgeous! My jaw dropped when you came back with the baby hair curls looking like a model! Even with short hair you are so beautiful. I wish I had your courage! If I was brave enough I would have cut my hair and started over as well. Your hair looks so good! I hope that you are happy and feel better. Even though it takes time to grow our hair, I've learned that the best thing we can do is enjoy every stage.

I was in the same position as you a year ago, I straightened my hair for the first time EVER and was repaid back with it getting heat damaged. I absolutely *refused* to cut my hair. I wore box braids religiously because of school, so I never really had my hair out. I decided to just leave my hair as it is and just moisturize it and constantly put it in protective styles. It's not until recently I noticed my hair has fully reverted back. I guess I'm just one of the few lucky ones but I completely understand how frustrating the different textures would've been

@@endure_3048 Yh, I see most people pu3tring their hair out of the way then cutting it as much as it grows slowly over time so their hair length would remain the same. But for what I'm talking about I think it depends on the strength of your hair and how you prefer styling your hair. (Idk if this is a measure, but, my friends and I all had our hair relaxed when we were kids, but recently I met up with them and they were all shocked I was natural and never had to do a big chop because my hair had reverted back on its own). -Regardless, I was already wearing box braids religious to begin with, but if you prefer wearing your hair out there's no point frustrating yourself more than you need to.

In fact, I haven't even reached the length you did prior to your chop). I'm glad the salon took responsibility and hope they do not do that to any other customers. I've toyed with straightening my own hair, but this terrified me so that may never happen! I'll blow dry it at the most, I think. All that being said, you looked STUNNING at the end!!! So sorry this happened to you. This happened to me about 4 years ago. The first press I had in years. The lady didn’t clarify my hair properly and she did the back half of my hair when I noticed it was very stringy and greasy because of product build up. I told her I’d pay for the blow dry and wash but I didn’t want to go through with the rest of my press. She damaged half of my hair & I had to start over for the 3rd time. I decided to not go back to a salon while I grew out my hair. I trim my own hair now. & the only stylist I go to is very very professional, the one I was supposed to go to when I got heat damage but I was late for my apt. Silk presses shouldn’t be heavy and greasy. Yours looked the same as mine. They either need better products for clarifying or didn’t use clarifying shampoo at all. Id say find a silk press specialist who knows natural hair and the science of straightening hair because different salons specialize in different things. Just don’t do it often. Btw, You look GORGEOUS. A new journey. I pray your hair grows back x10❤️

Yep, you’ve just confirmed for me that my hair was heat damaged when i got a silk press in January. I blame myself because I went to the saloon to get my daughters hair styled for her birthday. My hair has been natural for 6 years. I am very careful with what goes in my hair because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and one of the side affects of one of my meds is thinning hair and possible hair loss. I have had very thin hair for the last 10 years. When i went to the salon, my intention was to have my hair shaped and a colour. But the girl persuaded me to have a silk ores. My curls have not returned. When my hair is dry it looks straight and thin. My new growth is normal grey 4c. I am returning to the salon end of this months and i will tell them to give me a moisturising treatment and a cut to the new growth, then shape it. I thought the salon responded really well to you. Did they know you were a content creators? Because o have never heard of a salon acknowledging their mistake and compensating their customer with free treatments and products ! While it's sad what happened to your hair (I was getting stressed out on the inside just watching it since I've had my hair fall out and thin from a medical condition so I can somewhat relate to the feeling of not being able to do anything and just seeing the damage while being sad) I have to say... that end result looked SO GOOD on you o_o ! I think that cut just helps to focus more on your face and that's definitely not a bad thing. Your face is very pretty with the cute nose, the strong cheeks, beautiful shape, prominent lips and now we get to see your cute ears too! Since I big chopped when I went natural this time I’ve been letting it grow out. But my comment was just to let you know that heat doesn’t have to be the devil when you want straight hair. My hair got damaged after my regular salon shut down due to the pandemic, I tried someone else without doing my research smh. But before that my salon specialized in natural hair and I would get a silk press once every 3 or so months. It can be done! Don’t be discouraged if down the road you want to try again just research your salon/stylist, make sure they aren’t going over 350 with the irons, but in the mean time, I’m loving the new look!

Oh wow!! So sorry about that!! I definitely understand what you're going through cos I've had to big chop severally due to setbacks as well! However, you look amazing with the new cut now!! You go girl!!! I just want to encourage you and every other person that heat is not in itself bad, (and this is coming from someone who used to think that heat was evil and swore off heat completely). However, you must have enough knowledge and the right techniques to be able to actively use heat without getting heat damage, and here is what I mean.. 1. Getting a silk press should be dependent on the weather/climate of where you live - for example, it's better to get a silk press at a time with very little humidity, during dry weather, than getting it when it's very humid because the tendency to get heat damage will be more since you'll be trying to ensure the hair doesn't revert and then you could end up making one pass too many at a very high heat. 2. The temperature at which the protein bonds in hair permanently break down resulting in heat damage is 415°. So with that in mind, ensure that whenever you're using any heat tool, the highest temperature possible should be at 400°, (though 390° is just fine even for very thick coarse 4C hair, which I have by the way) 3. The fact that you're at the salon, and they are professionals doesn't mean you should leave all the responsibility of taking care of your hair to them - it's important to ask questions, be well informed and be actively involved in the whole process cos that way, you can control the outcome of your hairstyles more to your liking - for example, you would have been able to control the temperature as well as the number of passes that was done on your hair, to avoid the damage. 4. Strengthening and conditioning treatments are a MUST before and after heat styling. Strengthening could be using Hydrolyzed Protein Trearments, Bond Repair Treatments like Olaplex or Ayurvedic Treatments involving Henna and other herbs. Thus the hair is strengthened to withstand the manipulation during the course of the heat styling, and it is also repaired and strengthened after the heat styling. 5. Heat Protectants are a must, and they differ from each other, so it's important to actually get the ones that work to protect very well. A good knowledge of ingredients is very vital here. I personally use one that also contains hydrolyzed proteins amongst other things, which is a win-win. 6. Hair is made up of protein and water, so there's a balance that must be preserved in the care of hair. When using any strengthening treatment, always ensure to immediately following up with a deeply hydrating and moisturizing treatment to balance the hair out, and I personally think that Aphogee happens to be one of those good treatments that give you everything to ensure the right balance of intensive strengthening and hydration as you follow the specified directions for use. Not following the manufacturer's direction is what could lead to dryness and other things. However, there are other options, that are just as effective as Aphogee, on the market...you just need to know what you're looking for and get the right ones. 7. The heat tools you use are extremely important as well!! Using a hair straightener with uneven heating across the plates can definitely cause heat damage. You should also ensure that you use a blow-dryer that can be well regulated, to blow dry. Another idea is to actually dry hair with magnetic rollers using indirect heat, before straightening. Apologies for the lengthy post, however I believe that this is important information that we can all learn from. I wish you the very best on your new journey, so keep winning!!!

My mama never let me use heat in my hair for this reason, so it's become my biggest fear. I did want to get it done for my first week of school but this definitely erased any regret I felt for not doing it. Even though the result is pretty, it's risky so honestly I think getting a nice wig on can give similar results without the risk of all of that potentially long term damage! she still looks so beautiful after that chop and it's great to see her handle it well! made me relax and think that it's hair it will grow back eventually!

This happened to me the first time I had my natural hair straightened. I had different spots with hair that wouldn't revert back. Took awhile for it to get back to normal. I didn't cut it though, just kept it in different protective styles. I do still flat iron my hair myself like twice a year just to trim the ends. Love the short cut on you! ❤️

You got lucky 😀 I used to do length checks (being obsessive) and caused heat damage on different parts of my hair. I cut those parts off and now I’m in the process of making sure it’s healthy first

This happened to me almost 3 years ago. My hair was mid-back at the time and would not go back curly. I washed 5 times and it smelled like sulphur. I had some of it cut to make it look a little better. It grew so long over two years to the point my hair was almost to my tailbone but the damage had everything below my shoulders or so stringy. I could see right through it. I just finally chopped it all of to mid neck in November. It’s all back curly now and I’ve had to cut twice since to be sure the damage was all gone. It’s so much healthier now and it will be long again by the end of the year.

@@deborahboms Thank you! Same to you! Now I’m super careful & choosy about who does my hair. No more color for me and I don’t go above the 360 that’s already on the iron when I cut it on. Always use heat protectant and I don’t use the iron every day when it’s straight. It’s a learning lesson. You become aware and make healthier choices. Good luck in your hair journey, it’s just going to get better! ❤️

The stylist mustve done something wrong. Usually heat damage happens over time. Heat damage after one time is strange. Either heat was too high or the heat protectant wasn’t strong enough or maybe enough of it wasn’t used. I’m sorry this happened to you. I am a straight hair natural (a month in) and I flat iron once a week on 390 degrees and I have no damage yet. I don’t mind my hair being heat trained but I do not want breakage. So I do many treatments on wash day. I haven’t been to a salon in many many many years. I just don’t trust people in my head smh. I’d rather ruin my own head than pay someone to ruin it. I love short cuts (shaved my head a year ago) and you are beautiful.

Girl, you are gorgeous with your short and longer. Love the cut. But, I know it wasn't intentional and as you said took an emotional blow. I look forward to watching you continue your natural hair journey. I will say that watching the video of where they were doing your silk press, it seemed like the flat iron was waaaaay too hot. My hair is very similar to yours and I've done silk presses without heat damage. But I totally understand why after this experience why you aren't open to heat.

😭😭As someone who has gotten quite a few silk presses and done some of my own I don't believe this was heat damage. When coming off of a silk press I've learned that as far as low porosity thick hair its always best to shampoo first to remove all of the built up product(oils heat protectant serums etc..) THEN condition and return all of the moisture to your hair and sometimes it takes multiple washes. But none the less the silk press was gorgeous and your hair still looks great but I don't believe this was heat damage because your roots reverted fully and that's where she was applying the most heat (2-3 passes) also I've seen some comments about the smoke from the blowdryer.. that was the product most likely oil or a heat protectant its common and doesn't signify heat damage...
@JenniferFlournoy

exactly...she didn't even wash that out before putting condition or whatever that was....she cut her hair for no reason..

Your short hair is absolutely beautiful!💕 I'm natural and through trial and error. I have completely stopped ✋️putting any heat in my hair. I haven't had heat in my hair in 5/6 years. My natural stylist does my natural hair braid updos or twist on my wet hair. Heat is bad for natural hair I don't care what any other naturalists say!
