Heat damaged has killed yet another Naturalista watch this braid out fail and learn all about Heat Damage and how to move forward. COMMENT BELOW AND LET'S TALK
I agree, that's what I did when I got heat damage two years ago . Now I have about 11 inches of healthy hair and 1 inch of heat damage that I plan to cut off at the end of this year.
Trim/cut...if you relax it, you will be big chopping soon after...it’s something about the volume with natural hair that no relax hair can give......that volume is addictive🧐🤔😘😏
Unpopular opinion... I love my relaxed hair. Don't miss the fairy knots, the 8H wash and detangle days, and that shrinkage... baybee, idk how yall do it. I damaged my hair more in the last year that I was natural because I would just rip through it. No patience for that 4C head of mine after 4 years. 🙄😭
@@DontPlayWithMePlayWithYaMama but relaxed hair all in all is harder. It’s more prone to breakage so you have to take care of it just as much or even more than natural hair. Natural is way more resilient and wont break as easily. You might not want shrinkage but eventually your hair will break off and be short. Especially if your not taking good care of it.
@@chanelfaith8385 Thanks for the advice but I take very good care of my relaxed hair because I don't have to fight with it and I enjoy doing my hair more with it being relaxed. Being natural just isn't for everyone honestly. Yay for the trend but in the end, you have to do what works for you. Not what's popular.
Girl I would just trim every three months until it's gone. If you don't want to deal with the two textures you can always wear a 8-12 week protective styles (knotless box braids or wig) and after your take down wash, deep condition, blow-dry and then trim
@Trinity M I personally blowdry my natural hair every three months and have gotten no heat damage. In fact for my low porosity, fine strands heat is nessecary for me (heat with deep conditioning and a blow dry). But blowdrying my a few times a year hasn't given me heat damage. Frankly I've retained alot of length trimming on a schedule and stretching my hair hair, and protective styling have helped me retain 10 inches of hair in a year and 2 months.
Yea I don’t have issue with heat damage because I don’t bow my hair out often. I hardly manipulate my hair unless it’s getting braided 1-2 times a year and 1-2 blow outs a year. I normally wear my afro. I wear a wig once a year as well. So I try to stick with just my fro. I use Miss Jessie’s hair products for my fro. Multicultural curls is my go to when wearing my natural hair.
I can't deal with two significantly different textures. My transition was like two months. Lol! I was like cut it off! I can't deal with splits, knots and tangles.
I didn't cut my and I did aloe vera treatment and put in braids and a tea bag rinse and after a year my hair came back. You don't always have to cut. Jesus helped me
As a hair stylist, I vote for you keeping it. It really isn't that deep to cut it...Your hair is beautiful and the texture difference gives it dimension... PLEASE STOP WITH THIS OBSESSION OVER CHOPPING YOUR HAIR OFF!!! ITS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!
I couldn't agree more! I'm putting your comment in my next video. The cut it tendency in the natural hair community is so problematic. I'm definitely keeping it and I value your expertise!❤
@@RachelAdina YES IT IS!!! Also each hair goes through an Anagen, catagen and telogen cycle, meaning grow, rest, shed cycle...so eventually all the hairs on your head will be replaced anyway so say for instance you cut 6" off your hair, you are cutting the hairs that have lasted the longest on your head without knowing exactly how long their growth cycle is resulting in (for some people) a stage in which their hair seems to not be gaining length...this is because those hairs were due to shed out before the varying shorter lengths will and you are cutting them before you know what their life cycle (length of time they grow before they are due to rest and shed normally 3-5 years) is. Thank you so much for acknowledging my comment, your hair is absolutely gorgeous!!! And remember you gain an average of 6" per year!!!
And you are absolutely right about the "cut it" mentality in the natural hair community...if people just cleansed their scalp, moisturized, and left it alone (braided, twisted or simply pulled it back into a not so tight bun or whatever) they would see tremendous results!!!
@@maya-uz4wc But he is right. It’s like the first second and third suggestion is for everyone to cut their hair if they see a little heat damage. That’s ridiculous. It’s not just hair. It’s our crown and if women want it a certain way then let them have their hair a certain way.
@@DANNYTHEFROG123 true cause I'm transitioning and have been from about april and I have about 4 or 5 inches of my natural hair now and I trim the ends also. I do protective styles like twists and cornrows which I leave in for about 2 weeks then wash. I hope that I achieve all my healthy natural hair by August of next year because I've had my hair creamed or texturized for about 6 years now and I decided that why not have a fresh start but without a big chop and from there I've been on my journey which is so awesome because i loved to play with my baby hairs when i coil them🥰
And trying to go natural further damaged my hair for a very very long time, it came out in spots that took years to grow back... Going back to a relaxer did a miracle on my hair and scalp and it is very healthy now!! We have to know our hair and what it needs.. You can be relaxed and have very healthy hair.. Natural isn’t for everybody!! It’s the heat not relaxers that kills our hair!!
@@brandihinton399 i highly doubt going natural is what damaged your hair. you have to consider routine and what you’re doing to your hair. relaxing is what some people prefer and that’s ok, but i can guarantee that it’s not a miracle lmao. what would you do if all the relaxers were taken off the shelves? you would find a routine that works with your natural hair. the way it grows out of your scalp. but to each their own!
I agree with u. Natural hair is not for everyone. Just like some people don't like makeup or high heels. She asked for peoples opinions and one was given. I too changed from 6 years natural hair to a relaxer. I have been relaxed for 2 years and my hair is just a long, just as healthy, just as thick as it was when I was natural. I think the difference is knowing how to take care of you hair
@@brandihinton399 how can she relax heat damaged hair? Isn't heat and relaxer a no no. And relaxers do kill some people's hair and a lot of scalps. The scars. To each their own though
@@cheryltheblackarmymom9465 yes it’s all about knowing how to care for your hair. but at the end of the day you are still putting harmful chemicals in it to alter its natural texture. comparing your natural hair to make up and high heels is a little weird in my opinion but whatever works for you!
If you have not tried Kinky Curly you should. The shampoo, leave-in conditioner, and curling custard. I had heat damage so bad the ends of my hair were completely straight. By the third or fourth day of using those products my curls began reverting back to their natural state. I’ve used this line for year and have never be disappointed. I LOVE KINKY CURLY! ❤️❤️ It can give you crunchy curls if you use too much. Just an FYI. Maybe give it a try before deciding to cut it.
I had heat damage. But gradually it grew out. I used perm rods at the ends for my braid out. You could use something like olaplex a bond builder. Don't forget that relaxers also break the bonds in your hair but it's permanent. Heat damage is only a problem for certain styles. My hair is long too and I didn't want to cut it.
Sis...I was in your shoes last year with heat damage on my long hair. I did a second big chop in May 2019 and now I have been heat free and my length is back. I’m planning to finally blow it out so that I can do a complete trim. It will grow back! ☺️
Omg I'm dealing with the same thing right now with heat damage for the past year. Natural texture and curl pattern at the roots, bad heat damage in the middle, looser curls on the ends, and just a whole lot of frizz. 🙃 For me, I've been periodically trimming the damage off as it grows out and just taking my time with it as I get back on track with my hair journey.I also find that a good twaid out works the best so far and I'm getting into rod sets now too. I've been going through it with this hair and appreciate your transparency and honesty! I think it should be rewarding to stick through it but this could also be an opportunity to just switch things up while there isn't AS much to lose. Great video 🙏
I vote do whatever you want. I can see cons and pros with any decision. It'll either be short for awhile (but one texture and voluminous), two textures for awhile (but lengthy), or completely straight and lacking volume (but flowy and silky looking).
Don't cut it all off!!! Slowly trim it and follow up with protein treatments(specifically on heat damaged section), deep condition and cholesterol treatments. I did this when I was transitioning and I had no breakage and it actually revived a few sections that weren't severely damaged
I know you don’t want to hear this ... but when your heat damaged hair is still#hairgoals. Not to belittle your experience. Just saying that even with the setback, your hair is still fabulous. I an currently looking at your trimming video. Gonna follow it as I trim my hair tonight. 💜
I'm so grateful I came across your video! Because my hair is exactly like yours it's just that your hair is way longer than mine. I know how you feel it's not easy but we just have to keep looking after our ends ❤️❤️❤️
The RU-vid algorithm knew I needed this video 😭 I had tailbone length relaxed hair when a stylist under-processed it. Dealing with those two textures was a struggle that only got worse when my hair became over-processed from a different stylist who was confident that she could fix it with a corrective relaxer…that she pulled through the entire length of my hair before I knew what was happening💀 I’ve been transitioning to natural for the past 2 years and it’s been a nightmare. Mine is definitely breaking off at the demarcation line. Finding a product (especially a styling product) that works for both textures has been a struggle, so I just decided to focus on the health of my natural hair. Every wash day I contemplate chopping it-this throuple relationship we got going on is getting out of hand! The best way I’ve learned to manage it is by leaving it in two-strand twists or box braids and putting the twists/braids into a bun or milkmaid braids for work. I do NOT recommended permanently straightening your hair because you run the risk of under-processing or over-processing your new growth, so you may find yourself back in the same predicament. Stylist rates are also climbing, so chemically straight hair is getting costlier to maintain. I think you’ll look great no matter which direction you choose, but I also know firsthand that it doesn’t feel like an easy decision to make. Anyhoo, I hear you, I understand you, and I appreciate you for making me feel seen 🥲 Best wishes with your hair journey!
I am dealing with the same thing, I'll be 9 years natural in May. My last flat iron was 4/2019. It is annoying, but your hair isn't that badly damaged. You are still able to wear the front of your hair loose. My front is so bad I have to do a flat twist, braid or swoop bang in the front at all times if my hair is down to hide the difference in texture. I'm just going to grow it out and gradually trim
I just subscribed. Your hair is beautiful, I feel like no heat from now on, deep condition and protective style I feel your hair will come back. I’ve been natural 3 years now and haven’t straightened my hair once and I don’t have the length you have yet. I am still trying to learn my hair and keep it healthy to retain length. I can’t wait to see more from you. Stay positive God is going to with it out.
I have severe heat damage as well and have been growing it out for the past year. I would say grow it out as long as you can wearing protective styles and cut it off when you're ready. I plan on cutting it to shoulder length in a few months and be done with my damaged hair.
I actually really liked your braid out, it was very beautiful. Also since you aren’t having any breakage due to the heat damage you can work with it. Allow the heat damage to grow out (if the frizz doesn’t bother you too much)
You and your hair is still beautiful. Whatever choice you make I am sure it will be the right one. I would try different styles and protect it as much as possible during the winter coming. Then make a choice in the spring❤❤
We are in similar boats...I've been doing steam treatments when deep conditioning & moisturizing. It has helped with the frizz & moisture retention. Keep cutting at it, if you aren't ready to do a bigger chop.
I had a similar problem back when I used to flat iron my hair. I was too coward to cut it off so I just trimmed off like 5 inches and continued cutting it over time until it was healthy again. It takes time but after 5 years my hair is completely healthy and 21 inches long so it's all worth it. If you're impatient do a big chop but sweetie don't look at that relaxer your hair is sooo beautiful natural.
First of all YES VOCALS! Second: Personally I would (and have in the past) gradually cut it off. I feel like when I maintained a certain length and cut my hair gradually that it went by really quickly. My ends in general look great because of the frequent trims. I’m not team relaxer it’s bad for your health and contributes to fibroids which can effect fertility. If you would like short hair than go ahead and big chop. It’s a chance to experiment with cool tapers and short styles. I’ve had shot hair so many times I’m over it but it might be fun.
I’m dealing with this since I got my hair straightened and then curled several months ago. I’m just hoping that my hair will grow out long enough to take care of the heat damaged ends.❤️❤️
Sis, I was in these shoes last year. I literally decided to chop it all off (waist length as well) because it was so heavy on my hair like that dead weight was holding me down and making my hair look worse more and more lmao. There are no benefits in cutting in sections every few months. It also didn’t do me any justice to cut every few months either because you introduce more breakage and splitting and it will never give you the results you’re looking for. Today, all of my hair has transitioned .. I cut the bangs and top because they were already bangs that never grew for years and was super damaged. Girl, my hair has grown tremendously because of the chop including my bangs and it feels good that those stringy ends and straight ends are gone. It will grow back. It was grow back faster as well! It took a lot to cut my waist length hair to my shoulders but I’m glad i did. I wish i would’ve done it sooner
Omg! My hair was the exact same way and would only look good if I did a braid and curl, I couldn’t even do a wash and go anymore because of the difference in textures. I was also contemplating between relaxing or cutting it. And I finally just cut my hair about two weeks ago and it feels so thick and healthy and it’s all one texture now except for the front cause I didn’t want short bangs quite yet but I love it, so I’d say I am team cut it however the ultimate choice is yours😊
I’m dealing with the same issue. I considered just relaxing it, BUT once you relax you can’t go back! And I thoroughly enjoy rocking my natural curls❤️ So, I decided to wear protective styles for the next few months and just trim a bit off in between each style.
I'VE BEEN THERE! Back in 2017 I got heat damage all over! My hair was a *hot mess* : straight here, curly there, looser here, frizzy there. My roots and my ends were dead straight and I lost some elasticity inbetween. Also my right side was more damaged than my left so I got more breakage on that side. If your hair doesn't severly break off I'd say don't big chop just do trims every now and again. If you're able to retain the hair on your head without it breaking off and becoming see-through then just style it out for at least a year and *then* do a big chop; noone will notice lol, your hair still looks decent in a braidout.
If you feel like you need to cut it then do so. However, you could try an olaplex treatment to bring the curls back. I had heat damaged my hair a few years back. I never cut it i just started deep conditioning twice a week with a balanced protein/moisturiser deep conditioner all over my head concentrating lots on those ends that were damaged and I also used a moisturising leave in for the undamaged hair and a leave in that had protein for the heat damage parts. Took about 3/4 months for it to go back to normal. Because I was washing twice a week one of those was a cowash (using a cowash not a conditioner) and deep condition and then the other a shampoo and deep condition. A big notice was the amount of moisture and health my whole head starting showing even the non heat damaged parts. I now continue to wash twice a week and have seen great growth and no further heat damage. Hope it all works out well for you ❤️❤️
This is my first time here on your channel. I have had heat damage before luckily it was only my ends. I just cut them out not trimmed but cut. I see people are not misusing the word trim, you don't need a trim but a CUT. Just get rid of it, your hair will bounce back beautifully.
I just cut all my bad ends off at one time. It’s just hair and will grow back. Long hair does not define whether you pretty or ugly.. I don’t know why people be so attached to unhealthy ends
this is so me,im attached to my unhealthy ends because my hair has been flourishing the last year but i made a stupid decision and lightened it with peroxide, now its super dry and my curls dont shrink anymore. I really dont want to cut it but i want my healthy hair back🥲
I WISH!... my hair could look as good as yours. After 5 years I still can't get a proper flat twist. I just learnt I have heat damage for the first time. My heat damage looks just like yours. After 3 big chops I've finally got my hair to grow into one length and rocking my fabulous bob. But like you I am sooooo undecided. My hair sheds like crazy now. It drives me crazy.
Sis, I totally understand. I went to the salon for my very first silk press after 6+ years of my natural hair journey, and I do NOT have the same texture of hair now. The purpose was to get a professional trim because I've always trimmed my own hair. My hair has a few bone straight pieces, however my texture has loosened throughout my entire head. I had super dense/thick 4c bra strap length hair. It's so very disappointing. I've gotten past the initial regret and frustration, but that was allot of very hard work and money spent on products to get to where I was. I knew better and I did it anyway. People tell me my hair is still beautiful all the time, but all I can think is this is not the same hair I grew out of my scalp. But this too shall pass🙏🏽
Rachel, your hair still looks good. The most logical, practical answer is to cut off the heat damage hair. But listen to the emotional side and when you’re ready, you’ll know what to do.
I had the same problem. I ended up cutting my damaged hair off because it was so hard to manage with my natural healthy hair. Detangling and styling is so much easier now. I debated cutting my hair for a year. I wish I would have done it a lot sooner.
Hunny i can definitely relate i have been going thorough it all trying to get my hair back 🤦🏾♀️ i cut most of off and stop flat ironing coming up on a year now and still work to get my look back🤞🏾.
Check out my recent video I went on a Strengthening regimen and my curls have improved tremendously! I still have heat damage but the damage has stopped completely!
Girl I understand. I've had heat damage before and big chop. I recently combed out my locs and lost alot of my thickness with it. My hair is so uneven rn. Ppl telling me I have nice hair but this is like dreggs compared to how my hair was. I was think to suck it up too but I was detangling my hair this morning and I was like. "Nah, big chop" I need my hair to grow even. And don't worry. I consider relaxing it too. I may actually relax in for my birthday coming up in February, then eventually big chop. Believe you me. I feel you pain Big chop worked for me. 🤷♀️
I have a few heat damage pieces. Those pieces are bone straight or they have a wave I’m type 3c high porosity. I just used more protein, I always pre poo, u did hot oil treatments and twist outs a lot of the time, that helped my hair grow without cutting everything at once, I get trims every 3 months and that helped with the damage. Now my hair has grown out so much I have shorter and fewer heat damaged pieces, my hair grows out thicker now and healthier. Honestly keeping those ends and just gradually trimming them helps to retain the length. I haven’t used heat on my hair since last year October and my hair is flourishing. I normally don’t get heat damaged but my hair stylist looked away for 10 sec and I saw smoke. I got the heat damage where my naturally looser hair is around my face. Just use aphogee for protein, olaplex for building the bonds and you’ll see maybe you won’t even have to cut your hair. Tbh your braid out looks fine !
I would cut all the heat damage of and get a shape. But at the end of the day....it is up to you and your personal comfort levels. So, whatever you choose.....God bless your journey.
If you wear your hair straight most of the time just continue to do what you do. Go for your normal trims and try to use less heat, stick to the 360-400 degree(F) range. I’ve gotten my hair bone straight with 340 before. Don’t chop off healthy hair because of a texture change.
Girl this was me last year. I was devastated! I wanted to just cut it all. But i decided to transition and add major protein to it. I incorporated egg into every wash day and saw my hair start to heal. 2 months ago i finally cut off the total straight pieces. And now my hair is better than before the heat damage. So in a way it helped. I was forced to up my hair care game. I am 1 year 2 month heat free.
Thank you for this comment. I’m ill over the heat damage I have from a silk press this summer. I want to shave it all off, but will try and baby it back to health, as well as trims.🙏🏾
I have High Porosity hair and your hair looks good with the frizz. I hated transitioning with the two textures. If you are going to cut it, look at some old pictures of your shorter hair to see if you can deal with that length again. I would get the trims and protein treatments first before doing a chop.
Hi, I really liked your honesty 🙂 A best way to proceed would be to do a journey of protective styling and trim your hair once you've have grown some more lengths in between treatments. NB: Yes, it's not nice what has happened, but you cannot move on on a negative mindset. So, small positive steps to remedy this will do
Thanks for commenting this is a great way to grow out heat damage! I've been wanting some knotless bohemian box braids for a while now; that will given me and my hair a well deserved break!
I also got a relaxer after 5 years natural & I loved my curls! I just want to rock the straight hair look now without it reverting 2 seconds after a flat iron. If I decide to go rock the curls again, I'll big chop--easy!
Aaww sorry about the heat damage. I had the same issue and went corona crazy and chopped all my hair off march 2020. It's grown back alot. Your hair doesn't look horrible. Cutting slowly might work for you.
Cmon Vocals!! But I think you should try the olaplex system a few times to see how much you can revive and trim a couple of inches at a time instead of a big chop! Can’t wait to see what you decide. New sub 💕
Use olaplex no 3, make sure to leave it on overnight. My heat damage was gone the next day. I used to straighten my hair every week for 2 years and now I have my curls back and I’m sooooooo happy
Have you heard of the Chi Enviro - American Smoothing Treatment? You may want to research it. I had it for a few years & kept my hair straight. Now, I have it & I have my hair curly & I love it. My hair is really healthy & easier to manage. I also have the versatile that I want. For me, the best part is that it reduces frizz. I have multitextured hair that can be so disrespectful. Now, it's not an issue. Definitely check it out.
Big chop!!!! Or trim gradually every so often. You can always get straight hair while also having healthy thick coily hair : ) just have to use the right products and take good care of it
If your go-to style is a wash and go, then cutting might be the option you're more inclined to go with. But, if you do hairstyles that alter your curl pattern anyway (i.e. Braidouts, twist outs), then I honestly don't see the need to cut. Do what feels best to you at the end of the day - your body, your choice!
This happened to me. I cut off an inch or two of hair every couple of months until my natural hair reached a length I was comfortable with and then I cut off my all the heat damage. I grew it out like that for over a year before I cut off all the damaged hair. It was tough dealing with two textures im not going to lie lol. It would be easier to just cut off all the damage now but if the length is a concern for you doing what I did could work for you. Good luck 👍 💓
