I was one who never used a blow dryer or flat iron on my natural hair Until this one time my BF asked what my hair looked like straight So I got a silk press And from that ONE interaction with heat I had about 9-11inches of damage. I was almost waist length y’all So I was MAAAAAAD. It’s a year later and I’m transitioning But I’m still not over it. And now me and him ain’t even together no more.
i did blow dry my hair twice or once a month and my hair was healthy. then i decide to silk press my hair for the holiday. firstly when it got silk pressed it wasn’t even that straight, you could still see the frizz and the roots were slightly curled so i didn’t think i was going to get heat damage. later when i went to jamaica and washed it out i didn’t see any damage at all but then once i got to england again i noticed a lot of straight parts. i’m planning to big chop my hair or try a hair mask because apparently that might work so imma pray
@@surreal5864 Try a clarifying shampoo first before big chopping. Those products in the silk serum seems to weigh the hair down and clarifying shampoo will get it out.
Girl I literally did a big chop from heat damage and my hair grew back so nice, full, and thick and here I go thinking ONE straighten wont hurt. Now im here watching heat damage revert vids. LITERALLY FROM STRAIGHTENING MY HAIR ONCE AFTER almost 3 years
It took me 9 months to realize I had heat damage. For like 7 washes straight my hair smelled like fire. It reverted ok but when the roots started growing back so thick I knew something was up. I am seriously not using heat for years straight so I can get back to the best of my hair.
I blow dry my hair almost 24/7 it's fine I use a heat protect. I use to have heat damage it was straight from root to ends. I've gotten better and have healthier hair but sis heat isn't a monster nor your friend.
It only took me one year to bring my curls back after heat damage I never did the big chop I just did protective styling and I didn't use any heat for a year
I did the same thing and I had really bad heat damage and my hair reverted back. It took some patience, no heat and protein treatments, but it was all worth it. I learned a lot about my hair in that year's time😊
I have heat damage now in certain parts, mostly the roots so I'm growing it out. I was devastated at first but hair is hair and this is a journey for me.
lorettalynn Davis But then why I see some people who haven’t put heat on their hair in years, straighten their hair and it’s still see through stragly ends
I just suffered severe heat damage 3 weeks ago. I decided to have a silk press done after NOT using heat in 8 years. I finally cut my hair off yesterday and starting over again.
Outside of cutting my hair nothing would have repaired my hair. I had shoulder length hair in its natural state. After a protein treatment, deep conditioning my hair was literally burnt off
I straightened my hair like 2 weeks ago to see how long it is now & after I washed my hair yesterday I saw that a few strands where straight at the ends. I'm so sad right now, it's not as bad as it could be. It's only like an inch, but I'm determined to have a head full of curly hair ONLY. So I'm gonna just grow out the heat damage.
Octavia Eskridge it depends, in my case I straightened my hair two weeks ago, kept them straight for a week, did some touch ups every morning, but now I have straight strands, I’m talking about BONE straight, and it was my first time straightening my hair
Octavia Eskridge I just straightened my hair a week ago and kept it straight, washed it rn and my curl pattern is so different know 😭😭I was literally a 3b now my hair is like a damaged 3a/2c and I recently did the big chop a couple of months back and my hit was doing fine😭I’m honestly never going to straighten my hair again
I've only just realised just how badly heat damaged my hair is. I hated my curls and always straightened them since I was really young, but I plan to transition into my curls again. I've just made that choice so this video was so helpful and inspiring so thank you!!
I always wondered why every time I washed my hair, no matter which shampoo/conditioner I used, it continued to look frizzy. I had many angry moments when I was in the verge of cutting off all of my hair. People in my class kept telling me to straighten my hair so I did and I just made it worse. I used to have curly hair as a toddler and my mum wondered whether it was trying to come back, we started doing thing differently (air drying, using natural product, etc) and my hair went curly! I got so many complements about how nice my hair looked and I felt so happy with how I looked!
My hair is where your hair was but I have 3 inches of natural. I’m choosing to transition and focusing on moisture. I twist with moisture every other day and pull it into a chignon. Everyone loves it, but I can’t wait to get my curls back. I know now that I can’t straighten by myself. Funny that I never got heat damage this badly as a little girl with a hot comb and some grease.
Your hair looks lovely. I have heat damage but I still wanna get my hair flat-ironed (by a professional), colour it and do some more damage. When I'm done, I'll big chop for the 2nd time. Lol. Lol!
Great video!! I found a really great stylist she flat ironed my hair and layered it so beautifully for the first time after I big chopped and my curls bounced back every time!! She said if you go beyond a certain temperature the bonds break down and the hair goes straight. A few months ago I asked her to turn up the heat and sure enough the majority of my hair went straight. Once she turned the temp back down my new growth had no problem reverting so it’s safe to say you have to get salon professional advice and stay in the safe zone temperatures when straightening especially if you have finer hair ...I won’t let anybody touch my hair but her lol.
I know im 4 years late but i love this. My hair is damaged so baaaaad , I have 8 inches of damaged hair. I'm not willing to cut my hair but I started with a Alphogee protein treatment and deep conditioner. Alphogee protein every 6 weeks along with deep conditioning every week and cut my ends as needed. I'm just going to transition as you said furthermore I love your infomation on this topic. I messed around and went to the Dominicans and their heat is pass the scale. I learned my lesson.
Dang girl...where were you when a perm took out my hair (mid-back) & I went thru the transition period. It's grown back (took 3yrs)but...it's now heat damaged! Thanks to you I know just what to do & (more important) not to do! I'm too old for all this transition. Love this video ❤️
My hair used to be 3A and even though I have thick hair, I straightened my hair for like 2 and a half years. Now the left side and back of my hair is just bone straight, only my left side actually regained a bit of curl. I’m really upset but I started going natural like a month ago and my hair grows fairly quick so I’m going to be patient 💖
Love this! I didnt realise I had heat damage until I started my hair journey (3 weeks ago!) and noticed my hair looked exactly like yours @ 3:19 when I wash it. Thanks for keeping it real
I just trimmed my hair, not for heat damage, but because I neglected trimming until I had nearly 2 inches of damaged and tangled ends. My ends are thanking me now. It will all grow back soon enough
THIS is the video i’ve been looking for! i got a silk press 6 months ago, (when i should’ve just done a blow out & trim) and have SEVERE heat damage because of it - bone straight at the ends. 🥺 after seeing it i knew i’d have to transition/big chop all over again which is totally fine with me. i prefer the twa, short/medium length.. 💪🏽😅 #NewSubbie 💜
Omg!! I am so glad I found this video!!! My hair texture is almost identical to yours and I had heat damage from straightening my hair. I'm now in the transitioning period. I've cut off a lot of the straight ends and just allowing it to grow back curly and full. I can't wait.. i miss my curls! 😍
😞 I flat ironed my hair ONE TIME in over a year just washed my hair today and it’s not reverting! That’s never happened before! I’m stressed out 😰. My curls were perfect & now they’re gone. Heat was too high. During washing One side is bone straight the other side is waves. And I have coily 4c hair. I look like I’ve had yrs of heat damage when it’s only been one time this year. Trying to find a solution to fix it in 1-2 months, if not then I have to do a big chop for the first time. ☹️. I should’ve just gotten a wig if I wanted to switch it up so much. I miss my afro 😔. Hopefully protein treatment will help the process.
SheRea DelSol thank you. It’s my own fault. Just trying to laugh about it to keep from crying. Looking for a hairstylist on the Style Seat app to start the recovery process. I’ve always done these on my own, but it’s time to see a professional.
Oh my God, I reverted my hair from heat damage with loose curls (not bone straight) and I stayed away from heat for about 6 months. I got my hair flat ironed to get my hair trimmed and I washed my hair and some of the heat damage is back 🥺
Well I have my answer and now to the solutions. One silk press caused. First wash after silk press and I smelled that sickening burnt smell, 2nd week after I knew what I thought it was, did acv rinse, protein treatment, dc/hot oil treatment, the smell is gone but so are my curls. I twisted it and my twist are limp and my hair looks permed from the root down. Thanks for the very informative video, now it’s time face reality and try and get it back healthy. My hair was at its longest and the healthiest it has ever been and now I will be trimming and doing protective styles, damage is from the root down with little waves.
I legit born out my hair once and the ends of my hair became loosely curl to straight. It was not that much but I was tempted to cry. I'm not touching heat ever again.
As someone who has permanent damage and can never grow healthy natural 4c hair, I flat ironed my hair after showering; no heat protectant. I blow dried my hair on high heat every day. I bleached my hair with high volume... and colored it a lot. I threw my chance of having good natural hair away and I regret it deeply.
No hun don’t say that. Our naturals just take extra TCL. You can grow it. Feeding our hair is like feeding our bodies. Try a short natural style and maintain your deep conditioning and moisturizing.
I agree with you 100%. I also had severe heat damage, and had to let the heat go. I have not used heat in 4.5 years, and I LOVE not having heat damage anymore.
2pac's Spirit did you have heat damage so severe that it was bone straight? Or did you just have loose curls. And how long did you wait in between these two uses? Also did your hair revert right after?
this is me right now and I was sad. I went for a trim and didn't mind getting it straightened since I wasn't prone to damage. She did a blow out and straighten. Now I forgotten that I have bleach and colored but healthy hair over all. I deep conditioned for the last few weeks to help and that has done something what ever straight at roots pieces I have seen ...I cut it off xD I'm getting braids this month too. and won't color my hair for a while and a wig. xD
Your information was gold.. i did a silk press and my hair elasticity was gone..i was so dissapointed..my ignorance cost me..it was stringy and weak. I recently did a big chop for the 2nd time yesterday. It still has some straight pieces in-between..will do as you mentioned..deep condition and protein treatment..with time hopefully it comes around to my once healthy gorgeous hair..
My ISsue as well too straight pieces in between but overall look a lot better and puff feels thicker I’ll just continue with protein treatment weekly and deep conditioning
Finally shoulder length hair after 1 year of converting from perm to natural. i decided to get a silk press from a salon nearby. My hair smell of burnt fabric the entire time. I washed it and still smell the same. Im upset as this was major journey for me, but back to perms that way I can manage my hair better and it grows faster.
Just realize today my hair had heat damage bad , I would get blowouts and then have them flat iron it just to get it super straight. When try to give myself a wash and go I kept realizing my roots were so curly but ends bone straight. I had to google and finally realized wow . I have heat damage. Starting away from the heat now, are protective styles ok?
Thank you for telling it like it is. I don't use heat on my hair, but if I did, I know that if it is bad enough, I would need to cut the damaged hair. Damaged hair whether from chemical or heat doesn't go back to natural hair.
Shay-La Simmons that’s what they think but it’s usually just from it growing while simultaneously breaking off so they believe it was repaired but in reality it wasn’t
I have flat ironed my hair twice in my whole entire life and did it again for the third time and my hair is now heat damaged and I’m extremely mad and I have thick strands of hair
Ok, Guilty, I was in denial, until now. I’m not going to big chop, I’m going to transition. I’m nip length with 3 inches of thick luscious new growth and weird thin hair from 3 inch to my nip. I have a great regimen finally so my hair though heat damaged is very moisturized. Such a shame, I will never touch heat again. My goal was waist length, still is, once my hair reaches waist length, I’m gonna start trimming then til I reach that luscious hair. Thanks for this video, it got me out of denial and into acceptance and progressively doin what I gotta do and not make the same mistakes.
I’ve straightened my hair twice and the first time was fine and I got it done by this lady. Reverted back and was fine but when I got it done the second time I was noticing she was putting to much heat to me head. 3 weeks later I wash my hair put a mask in and some oils to let the curl magic happen but turns out my 4c curls where looser and so many strands were straight! I was furious. Just gonna have to let my hair grow out and keep trimming away. Can’t keep what’s dead 😢
I straightened my hair for the first time in 2 years since my big chop and now I have the worst heat damage ever. Some of my hair is dead straight.... makes me want to shave it off ngl
Hey girl, haven't seen you in a minute. Hope all is well with you. I don't use heat at all. I stretch my hair for two days after washing to keep heat out. Thanks.
I got heat damage from going to 2 hair stylist that wasn't my normal stylist. They burned my hair severely, thats what i get for being lazy. I cut off all the damage and now got my second install of braids. Im not pro no heat still. I will be blow drying my hair on a low setting and using pantene heat protectant.
My grandma flatironed my hair everdya when i was nine becasue she didnt like my naturaly curly puff. My 3c/4a hair was down to my butt when i was nine. Now im 13 and it barely touches my shoulders. I working on repairing my damaged hair by cutting my damaged parts off, using rice and pepperment essential oil water and treatments to help my hair.
Yessss ! Preach Girl ! NEW SUBBIEE😁💕, I Actually Watched Your Original Heat Damage Video But I Wasn't Subscribed . So Glad I Found You Again ! And You're Really Speaking Truth In This Video , A Lot Of People Want Thick, Healthy, Natural Hair But Don't Have The Patience To Care For It Properly . This Video Was Definitely Helpful. Love Your Videos Hun 💯🙌🏾
My hair has been severely damaged from wearing it up in a bun and other type styles for many many years. I wish I knew how much damage I was causing it. Oh well, now time to heal
So true that people see coily hair and they tend to handle it roughly when it should be the opposite. So tired of paying professionals only to have them rip and tear my hair.
I dont normally comment on videos but this was so informative. Get job! I feel like it gives me a clear understanding of I should approach my heat damage. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video, gave me good tips and motivation to finally start over my healthy hair journey! And btw you and your hair are so beautiful!
I'm a boy I used to blow-dry it on high heat all the time. Now I have combination hair, for example on the tip-top and side of my head straight hairs grow out. This means my afro will forever have a triangle shape😭😭
I got my hair professionally straightened ONCE and the back of my hair was severely damaged. I went ahead and shaved the back and put cute nape designs. Now I will never let the back grow and never get it straightened.
Olivia belle02 My sister and cousin attempted to straighten my hair on 430 degrees. The straightest part, which is the back, is now completely damaged. I have some in the front and middle. Just the ends. But I noticed some of my curls are looser. They blend with my other curls so I don’t mind it but as for the back, it’s just gone. 😂😭. Thinking about cutting it.
I’m right there with you sis, just did a mini chop tonight, my puff looks a lot better still got straight pieces here and there but overall a lot better feels thicker already. I’m thankful i have some curl left and wasn’t a total lost cause. I’m deep conditioning and doing protein treatments weekly. We will get there. During the workweek protective styling. We got this.
Man my cousin absolutely RUINED my natural hair. My hair was healthy and down my back. I had safely blowdried and straightened my hair so she could give me a sleek ponytail for a wedding. She went and re-straightened it because she said it was still too thick to sleek it and lied about the temperature, saying it was on 240 when by the end I saw it was on 350. When I washed my hair bro, it's smelt burnt and I washed it 5 times. From the front to the crown of my head, my roots are straight and I have a few whole straight pieces throughout. I was so upset I cried. At least if the heat damage was at the ends I could've just cut it off but it's in my roots so even when I grow it out, it'll be curly straight curl and I'll have to cut it. I bought some Aphogee Damage shampoo, two step protein, and their texture treatment. Hopefully it works bro because I really am confused and upset about everything.
This is by far the most relatable comment! Everything you mentioned happened to me as well, even the part with the wedding! Lol..My hair is bleached blonde, however I did the aphogee protein treatment and I plan on being consistent with my washes/deep conditioning as my natural roots grow out...I also trimmed my hair so I'm excited to see where this journey goes.
New subscriber. I never had heat damage but just wanted the advice for future notice. Great advice though. You said you're from the Caribbean, girl where??!! Fellow Caribbean person.
When I was first transitioning my hair, I knew nothing about it. But like after 2 years my natural hair started to show more, but I had like one patch that was straight. And I still continued to flat iron after I took out protective styles to check how long it was. Anywho, for some reason, that patch is curly like the rest of my hair now. Even though I still flat iron after my protective styles. I know nothing about my hair honestly. That's why I keep it in protective styles, and I never trim because I know people can be scissor happy.
This video was very helpful. My hair is extremly curly at the roots, straight in the middle, and looser curls at the end. So, I'm wondering if I should big chop, or just weight out and trim as I go?
I barely use heat (cut way back on that) and if I do I use a heat protectant and use heat tools on a low setting. I get quarterly trims. I cut all of the heat off and it has grown very quickly in the last ten and a half months.
Why do we get heat damage? Is it because we don’t use the straightening comb and pressing oil like when we were kids? I didn’t get heat damage then.🤔🤷🏾♀️
Hello. Where can I start. I HAD heat damage. Have 4c hair went to a 2bit saloon who had the blow dryer way too hot had used the comb on the blow dryer and was yanking my hair backwards. Result. Heat damage in the front only where she was yanking it. Devastated. It wasn’t bone straight heat damaged but it was heat damaged and straight. I stopped blow drying it for about 6months and kept up with protein treatments and other treatments and the front of my hair DID COIL back. It’s as nappy as hell as if nothing never happened. I didn’t do a big chop but trimmed about an inch off and just left it nappy for 6 months and it’s back to normal. Now I don’t understand. I have no explanation as to why my hair reverted back nappy. May be I received a miracle. I do believe the protein treatments had something to do with it and may be cause the damage was from a bow dryer and not a flat iron if that had anything to do with it. Heat damage CAN be repaired. I think everyone’s hair is different and may be leaving it alone for 6 months and protein treating it helped it. Right now I’m rocking a beautiful blown out 4c Afro and yes I blow dried it again but now I go to professionals. Lots of people on RU-vid saying we are being dishonest about repairing heat damage and I’m living proof that a miracle happened.
I would blow my hair out once every month and a half when I washed it and it was never damaged.. I only braid my hair so it grew fast. My wrist got broken recently so I went to a Dominican salon for them to wash, treat and blow it...and now my hair is heat damaged. Like a bulk of hair keeps coming out😭😭😭
I have used heat my whole life I've neevr suffered any severe heat damage my hair always reverts back every single time and I wash and press my hair every two weeks with a hot comb and will style it with a flatiron.
I wanna CRRRRRYYYYYYYYY!!!! I never put heat on my hair but wanted a press and trim so bad and now my hair is fucked...I'm so sad! Idk what to do, I don't even want to see my hair right now! Thanks for this video, imma about to do a protein treatment ASAP and go into protective styling for the next 7 months 😭😭😭😭
@@SheReaDelSol Is it ok to go into protective styling like braids, kinky twists, or crochet styles, given the fact that I need to be deep conditioning and doing protein treatments regularly?
@@SheReaDelSol Thanks girly! Cuz that pressure got me with mixed chick hair...I want my African hair back lol. Love your spirit, definitely a new subbie!!
I've used a blow dryer a lot of times and there was never any problem from heat damage. I use it once a month and I have kinky hair. Is something wrong with me?
I have like three-four inches of heat damage at the end of my hair most parts and in the front my heat damage is is like in the middle of my strand if I cut the front it will be to my eye brow 😩 I’m going to transition for a year
I got a quickweave for the first time In about a year or two . My hair was literally sizzling when the girl flat-ironed it . Now my leave out is heat damage. I’m so devastated.
I straighten my 3 times a year and I use 3 things as mu holy grail...and no heat damage as of yet. And maybe mines insnt drastic enough to tell? All I know my hair is the longest its ever been and the perm was the culprit.
