OLD SCHOOL EGG CUSTARD PIE
THE QUOTE OF EASY AS PIE SHOULD BE ABOUT THIS RECIPE
this is so easy and fast and good
Recipe
3 whole eggs
2 cup whole milk
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix all ingredients in bowl and add to pie shell
Cook in oven at 350 degrees for 40 minutes and enjoy
So so simple

Love custard pie! The best custard pies I've made have been when I can get good ol' country farm eggs either at the farmer's market or there's a brand at the grocery called "Happy Eggs" that are pretty pricey but from free range, pasture raised chickens and the yolks are that deep orange color. The dark yolk eggs make awesome custard pie! The filling is a deeper yellow.

We by happy eggs also. My mom used to make this pie EVERY Saturday for Sunday. She use pet milk instead of whole milk. I'm trying to make today. I never would try growing up cause it giggled, 😂

Hi Chef...this is my oldest son's favorite pie. I cook it often. I use Pet milk or an evaporated milk...egg yolks only.

I make a baked egg custard.... like your recipe just without the pie crust. Then I chill it. A refreshing treat during hot summer afternoons. 😎

Thank you D. Hall so much for sharing how you make your egg custard. I never would have thought about baking it without the pie crust. Chef Jeff, this pie reminded me of my Granny. She used to make it all the time when I was growing up. I'm 78 yrs old so that gives you an idea of how long ago it was. The pie is so light and refreshing. You can have it after a big meal and not feel so miserable. Thank you for sharing and bringing the sweet memories of my Granny to my mind.

So glad you posted this recipe. This was my maternal grandfather’s favorite pie. Like you, I did not like this until I was grown. I only remember my grandmother making it without any written recipe but this seems as I recall, the same one. My grandparents have been gone for 35 years now so I am anxious to try this. Every time I watch your videos it brings back childhood memories! So much of the cooking from the mountains of S.E. Ohio where mom was raised was really soul food, but I never realized it. Mom made custard pies, her favorite, and sugar pies, my dad's favorite. I haven't had either in fifty years. I will have a custard pie before next week. I am also going to try to find moms Suger pie recipe if she wrote it down. My wife has all of my mom's recipes and most of her mom's. Many were passed down to them from their grand mothers!

Hands down my favorite pie! My mom made them and custard cups. I discovered mace after eating a pie from a burger joint (the best) and starting using mace instead of nutmeg. I do add a little salt to mine and use 3/4+ sugar. Try adding 1/4 teaspoon salt next time. The best!!!

Hey Chef Jeff and family!! You brought some happy tears to my eyes with this pie Chef. This was my grandpa’s favorite pie was egg custard/egg pie and between this pie and the buttermilk pie; my mom would have to make 5-10 pies lol!! I was very young when he passed, but I do remember we bonded over pie and fishing when he had gotten sick. I’m the only one in my home who eats it so I got a real treat to make myself tomorrow 😂😂😂. Thanks for sharing and I also like my buttermilk pie/egg pie very cold too. I can’t wait to make it I can already taste it ✨😊

Chef Jeffery, I,love♥️love ♥️egg custard pie. I have Frozen Shoulder on my Left side. But I wanted this pie so Bad. I said, Lord I can do this if you strengthen my shoulder for just a few minutes" God heard my prayer and THAT PIE was😋 & I forget to add the vanilla.flavor😂 But the Nutmeg made up for the missing vanilla. I made this yesterday and at first thought that the measurements given were wrong because it was nowhere near done at 40 minutes! However, after another 30 minutes it came out perfect! Thank you for this recipe which isn’t as sickly sweet as so many others and is reminiscent of my grandmother’s in England in the 1950’s when I was a child. The only thing I changed was the vanilla - we just use nutmeg in England.

I haven't had egg custard in years, and have never made it myself. But, if I was to make one amendment to this recipe, I would put a pinch of salt in it...Salt just rounds out the flavor of sweets...

New to the channel and I was wondering if you were going to make this pie!!!! This brings back childhood memories. My grandmother friend , her name was Mrs Garrett love this pie!!! Her week wasn’t right if she didn’t have this in her refrigerator. My grandmother would make it and have one of us take it to her. I never liked it as a child. My Grandmother used to make this every Thanksgiving and Christmas, and like your mother, she only made 1 cause it wasn't a favorite. But I enjoyed it fresh out the fridge!! Never really knew the recipe, but I am going to try this 1 to see if it's close to hers. Thanks
