I worked for a dermatologist whom I consider to be one of the most honest Drs in the business. The way you convey information, share tips and tricks,, and advise on Do's and Dont's , STRONGLY reminds me of him. Many dermatologists, especially here in L.A. , will push,push,push EXPENSIVE cleansers and sunscreens. He, like you, favored and recommended Neutrogena.You are very likable and straightforward , instant subscription!

My mom’s dermatologist when she was suffering from acne as a teenager actually made her wash her face with Lava soap. Of course it only made her acne MUCH worse. How much we’ve learned over the years.

You're right. Some products cost way too much. But advertisers are clever. They know how to zero in on people's insecurities. Lately, FB has ads every day for a CC cream that costs a whopping $42 for a mere 1.05 oz tube. Women demonstrate using it, pointing out all of their facial flaws. That bothers me ! So many of them look fine w/ nothing on their skin. I've heard Dr D say your skin isn't supposed to be all one color. I agree. But I keep hearing the "need" to even out their skin tone. I wish they could see how beautiful they already are.

I didn't even know that I had a decent skin care routine. I was thinking that dermatologists had all those expensive products that the 20 yo beauty guru's had, and that led me to this video, trying to find non expensive products. I realized that almost all the products that you were using, I actually had and had been using this entire time.

This was really helpful - I love how you present things in a detailed and orderly fashion. And your skin is looking terrific! One question - is there anything in your routine that you would change if you were older? In other words, what advice would you give your mom regarding a good skin care routine? I am somewhere in age between the two of you, and aging rather than acne is my biggest concern right now. Thanks for any suggestions!
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 7 лет назад
Thanks mireckca! I wouldn't really change much, other than panoxyl probably is no longer needed as hormonal acne/acne in general tends to wane with time. So in fact the routine gets simpler, lol! Sunscreen, sunprotection (with hats and sleeves), gentle moisturizers to face, greasy thick moisturizers to body, and a topical retinoid. I really don't think much additional exfoliation is necessary beyond what a few nights worth of a retinoid would offer. Hope this helps, and thanks so much for your great comments. hOpe you are having a great day!

I've learnt so much from observing you and listening to your reasoning behind what you do. I have started implementing changes and I see the improvement of my skin. So, I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you! I am forever irritated though about the same product in the US having different ingredients than in Europe. For example, it's impossible to buy anything with benzoyl peroxide OTC. All these products that seem to have BPO in them in the US have salicylic acid in them in Europe. I love the lifestyle/vlog component of your videos. So watchable!

Thanks for a through explanation of updated skin care routine. Just want to make sure I get it right, no soap for the rest of the body, even no body wash, just pure water? I'm thinking of eliminating SLS from my body wash because I'm aware how it can clog pores, so it may exacerbate KP, but seems like I don't need body wash at all? Have a good one :)

Dr.Dray, I really love your videos and i've learned so much. I have an acne prone skin,cystic i might add. I was on Pernex AC .....contains 5% Benzoyl peroxide. It worked really well at the beginning for about a month but then it stopped working and i started to have this really awful rash. Could i be allergic to Benzoyl peroxide? I then started to use the Oriflame Pure skin range for blackhead treatment,it contains Salicylic acid and guava and i realized it helps with the rahes and also the lesions but the moment i get off of it my skin breaks out again. I also realized i dont do well with Sunblocks and sunscreens....they break me out.Aloe vera gel and the Simple Moisturiser for oily skin also break me out. I also have a very oily skin and i have literally tried everything and nothing works not even the topical treatments.I didnt always have an oily skin. Came about after use of Tretinoin some few years ago. What advice would you have for me?

Watching your videos is like asmr for me. i saw others have asked for this too, but please make a viddy on hyperpigmentation & acne scars! i've been to 2 dermatologists in my area & they both wrote me off with the classic oral medication & a cream when my acne isn't exactly active anymore. Not to mention when one wrote a script for a $1,000 face wash (!!!!!) i ended up only filling the 0.3% adapalene gel script. 1 week in, so far so good but back to the beginning (im going to try hard not to elaborate too much bc a 5 page youtube comment ain't cute) basically, i've had red acne scars on my cheeks for nearly 4ish? years & i just don't understand whats causing this response. Sometimes they'll be very red & now sometimes light pink enough to blend more into my pale olive tone. I've noticed that when i drink water with apple cider vinegar, my skin looks good with the redness not being front center stage. I am starting to notice scars getting deeper as time continues with this inflammatory response dying down or whatever. Why would skin do that? Meh.
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 7 лет назад
TewLURKERS thank you so much! Sorry you had a bad experience with you hyperpigmentation problem. No evidence for acv in skin disease, but if you think it helps, u may be on to something we just don't have the data for yet. Hope you are having a great day 🌸

I have the same problem with red acne scars- i believe its called post inflammatory hyper pigmentation. It got so bad i had to go to my derm for it last week and she also prescribed me the 0.3% adapalene! lol I guess we're in the same boat! It has been about 5 days of me using it and i do see a slight improvement in the redness. Hoping it goes away in the next few weeks of using the adapalene! :( I am also contemplating on getting another chemical peel which helped a TON for me last year when I was struggling with the same problem but $150 for it just doesn't sound too pretty to me right now.

Great video Andrea. I have a question: I try hard not to pick at pimples, but sometimes they get "popped" prematurely by accident (from sleeping, washing my face, etc). Do you have any advice for when that happens to prevent scarring ?
@DrDrayzday

I would see a dermatologist and regularly, until your acne is well controlled, because inflammatory and/or cystic acne scars and that can be prevented by getting your acne under control. Hope that helps.

Hello Dr. Dray , what is medical grade skin care products? What's the difference from drug store products? Dose medical grade skin care sink to the deeper layers of the skin compared to drug store? Dose the medical grade contain more of active ingredients that penetrate the skin layers? I have been told drug store products contain extremely small amounts of beneficial ingredients they do not work compared to medical grade. Thank you roseingeorgia
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 7 лет назад
Hi Rose. Medical grade is marketing term basically. It implies that the ingredient has some scientific basis for skin improvement, cosmetically speaking. These products are not regulated by the FDA so there is no way to know that they contain the ingredient they say they do, that the ingredient is in its stable of biologically relevant form, or clinically effective. They are not standard of care in dermatology. They have not undergone rigorous testing to demonstrate efficacy. The marketing often makes use of requiring an "authorized dealer" (i.e. a doctor's office) to make the product seem more attractive to consumers. Like they are getting "medical grade, doctor-recommended skin care." In my opinion these products are just overpriced moisturizers and sunscreens, which offer no established benefit over what you can get in a basic sunscreen and/or moisturizer from CVS. HOpe this helps. Have a great day!

hey I have a question, when you wake up you do your skincare routine right? But what if you shower in the middle of the day? Do you have to repeat the routine because it was "erased" from the water? I hope you understand my question.
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 7 лет назад
I don't shower in the middle of the day, but should the need arise to shower mid day then i don't get my face wet in the shower and only rinse the body. I reapply sunscreen afterwards, but don't repeat anything else. My showers are pretty short, as excessive bathing dries out the skin

Do I need to use an additional moisturize after that, or does the Hydro-boost is the only moisturizer I need in the am? I would follow up with sunscreen.
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 7 лет назад
Thanks! Yeah you need to put moisturizer on top of hydroboost for sure. It "boosts" the moisturizer...but if you just leave it on by itself it will lose the extra water it holds onto and leave a dry film, which you don't want

Nur McRae great question...it's tough as it depends on how deep in the skin the discoloration is located. Some will improve with time, but sometimes it persists. Doing too much actually just ends up setting you up for irritating that can then heal with more discoloration. Don't abandon sunscreen as it is essential. Hope that helps. So happy you are enjoying the channel and hope you are having a great day 🌸

Hello there! I've been using Proactiv Plus facial cleanser. It has these tiny microbeads in it. Is that ok to use? I've heard that acne prone people shouldn't use exfoliations on the face but it's fairly gentle. What do you think?

Can I use Panoxyl 2 times a day. Once in the morning and once at night? But in the morning can I use it and then apply a sunscreen? I'm on week 1 and Panoxyl did not cause peeling or dry patches. It just caused more breakouts. I'm pretty sure it's because of the Panoxyl and Differin.

I am ashamed to admit after watching this video... but I like to wear a lot of makeup and it's the end of the day I like to use a Clarisonic to take it off because before discovering that I had a ton of gross bumps you mention to just use your fingers but what do we do in situations of getting off a serious amount of makeup I use coconut oil to start with and then I wash it with my Clarisonic at night. I've been struggling the last couple of years with little bumps that are not necessarily zits and some of them don't pop their tiny but I can't find anything online really about what they are or how to prevent them I take very good care of my skin I feel and I never go to bed without washing it and no matter what I seem to be doing those are still there they eventually came back after switching to a face brush they are not nearly as bad as before I started using it though I also antibacterialize my face brush before using it every time. Is there anything you would recommend to sanitize Clarisonic bristles daily? I use coconut oil on my face brushes and I've heard it takes about 2 hours for them to do any kind of antibacterial lysing but then I wash them with an antibacterial soap after.
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 6 лет назад
i dont think coconut oil alone is a good choice for sanititzing...white vinegar diluted in water would be a better choice
@kristymatsen8262

Dr Dray thank you so much for your reply yes I don't use coconut alone I condition them and get some sanitizing in for that hopefully lol I use an antibacterial soap afterwards to wash the coconut oil out of my brushes thank you for your recommendation I will definitely try that! What are you thoughts on parabens? I have avoided them in my skin care products for a while now. I picked up the Differin today and noticed that is has methylparaben in it.
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 7 лет назад
Kelly White parabens are fine unless you have developed an delayed type hypersensitivity to them, in which case you have to avoid them. Marketing capitalizes on a problem that occurs in a subset of people in order to convince you that their "non-toxic" product is better than the competition. Like "gluten free" twinkies.

I have a question about sunscreen. I use a face sunscreen under my makeup in the morning. I don't reapply my makeup and I dont take it off until night time. Is my sunscreen still working all day or stops working after a few hours? What would someone do that wears makeup all day but sill wants protection from the sun throughout the day?
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 7 лет назад
Hi! Yes you should reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours when you are outdoors all day, regardless of the spf or if your make up has sunscreen in it. I find that dabbing the sunscreen on with a makeup sponge is a useful way to reapply it without messing up your makeup. Honestly though the best thing is to wear a broad brimmed hat and long sleeves when outdoors, because its tough to keep up with the sunscreen reapplication. Sun does come through the windshield glass in the car, so try to protect your face as best you can. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for commenting!

I’m going to see my dermatologist soon but is it normal for you have little minor breakouts on doxycycline. It cleared up my skin DRASTICALLY at first and after being on it since january or so my skin has been on and off from being super clear to minor breakouts. Now it’s gets red easily and is dry in certain areas like flaking and peeling off but still oily with more texture. I’m thinking about switching back to cetaphil for my cleanser and trying to take it at the same time everyday. I take the doxy in the morning usually at 6AM but if i wake up late at 10-11AM or so.

Hi Dr Dray, I just have a question that is bothering me: can you get Millia for one-time use of a bad product? I was at a Dior counter in Nordstrom and the girl applied eyeshadow on my eyelid, soon after I realized she took the tester shadow from where people put their fingers on to try!!! The shadow must have been really dirty. She also applied an eye pencil around my eye despite I told her not to because I have such an oily skin that does not work with pencil eyeliners. Anyways, the day after I noticed I have milia on my bottom eyelid. Could this potentially appear because any of the products that she applied (dirty eyeshadow, or the oily pencil eyeliner)? They sit on my skin around 8 hours. I know it is over I just want to know.
