My daughter told her teacher she didn't get anything for her birthday and I had to remind her she got a trip to Disney world and $50 spending money while we were there 🙄. I was so upset. My daughter just said she forgot...kids smh.

Just went through this with my 10 year old. Friend told her she was thinking about self harm. I thanked my daughter and met with the school the next day. My daughter was scared that the friend was going to retaliate. Friend thanked my daughter for telling an adult because she really did need help. Aside from the fact that my daughter is dealing with this at 10, I’ve always told her that no matter what- she tells an adult if someone is threatening to hurt themself or someone else. It was so hard for her to come forward but I’m proud and thankful she did.

Yep I lived that. The room I was stuck in was triple digit in the summer and freezing in the winter. No one cared. I was the “invisible child”. No one gave a dam and no one seemed to ever see me. I left as soon as I could. I learned early that no one cares about anyone else unless they get something out if it. Others just turn a blind eye.

You can also look up child advocates in that area. They tend to be separate from CPS and have a good idea of how the system works. I am a mandated reporter, but I report when I'm unsure. I leave it to the investigators to figure it out. I'm not taking the risk with a child because I know too many adults who were not believed as children.

Call the non-emergency police... Child Protective Services is more likely to harass the parents, even if nothing is wrong. Child Protective Services has their place, But they're authority goes unchecked too often, I seen it firsthand in multiple situations in the lives of people I know in real life.

The other aspect of things with the teenagers is that if her friend lied then whatever happens next is not the daughter, but if the friend is telling the truth, how is the daughter going to feel looking back on things if it isn't reported (even if the friend says she was joking?) Also even if she says it was a joke, it should be reported...it is better that this other child is believed and people were "too concerned" and maybe she deals with the larger consequences of lying, but this teenager (the friend) may also claim she was joking lying because she was afraid.

Yeah... I'd help my parents anyway if they were going through a temporary financial setback -- in my case they've always prioritized me and my siblings and have been very financially responsible and frugal, if some devastating medical emergency happened or something then I would prioritize getting them through it even if it meant taking on extra work or taking money out of my savings.

Who knows what’s really going on. When my mom was a teenager she lived in the unfinished basement with carpet hanging from the ceiling to partition a bedroom area. Her dog slept next to her and they kept each other warm. She loved it and it was her choice because she wanted to have her own space away from her siblings. I can see how it could be neglect though as well if the kid is forced or it is unreasonably cold. There’s some nuance to the situation and it’s best to let the authorities investigate and determine which it is.

Exactly. I have 9 kid’s and have heard it ALL at one time or other. There are simply too many holes in that story. The primary one being that the “abused” child that is being “neglected” has communication ability.

It’s sad that people think it’s a crime to get a blanket for Christmas or a candy bar for a birthday. Yeah it’s not much, but it’s the thought that counts.

I think the woman was incinuating though she knows the family and that gift doesn't line up with the family she has seen in public. Those gifts could be all they can manage and that is valid. But if lets say the daughter is the youngest of 3 and the 2 older kids get substantially more at Christmas and birthdays that's a pattern of treating the daughter as lesser.

It’s not this deep. Call for a welfare check IMMEDIATELY. If the child is being abused, they will have potentially saved her. If not, the parents will know they need to do better to care for their child and at least provide heat. The consequences of not acting are greater and than acting.

Pam is both a busybody and not too bright. Unless this teenage girl is being locked into the basement at night, she has the option of taking her bedding and going upstairs to sleep on a couch if she is too cold. Her parents just moved into a new house in the middle of a world wide pandemic with houses at a very high price right now, probably because of a job or jobs in order to do such frivolous things as feed and clothe their children. “Everyone but me has their own room.” Translation: “I refuse to share a bedroom with my sibling, and hence I am staking a claim on the basement bedroom my parents are no doubt planning on as soon as the can do it. This way I will have a nicer bedroom than my siblings.” “I only got a candy bar for my birthday and a blanket for Christmas.” Translation: “My parents are either really hard up for cash right now (a possibility) or the bought me a specialty candy bar (a nice gift) because I have everything else (but a bedroom). The blanket that I got cost as much if not more than what each of my siblings got because I complained how cold I am (because if the blanket was wool, it is a very expensive item).” This teenage is trying to get sympathy points from her friend, and these adults are sticking their noses in. Remember this girl is communicating on an expensive device since her friend can see her. Oh, she is so hard done by - NOT.
