This is your periodic reminder that BMI is bullshit.
Ok, not really.
BMI can be useful for looking at population trends. Why? Because height and weight are two of the easiest statistics to collect if you ask millions of people.
Can you imagine asking millions of people what their body fat percentage is? Most people never have this measured and if they do, it’s often with very unreliable devices.
Therefore, whether we like it to not, BMI kind of wins by default. It’s VERY far from perfect, but it’s what we are stuck with until something better comes along.
But, it is important to realise that someone can be somewhat useful on a population level but not particularly useful on an individual level.
BMI can classify people as ‘overweight’ or ‘obese’ even if their body fat is low, if they have a lot of muscle mass, as demonstrated by this video. You could have the same BMI as someone else, but have completely different 1) body fat percentages 2) fat storage patterns 3) health statuses.
We all know that BMI doesn’t tell people the full picture when it comes to their body composition. We mock it when it misclassifies people.
But, this is a great opportunity to take this lesson one step further and emphasise that using BMI to make snap judgments about people’s health is also a dangerous game.
Because how many people fall on the ‘overweight’ spectrum at the Doctors office and immediately get lectured about their health, before the Doctor has asked any other questions about your physical activity levels, or performed any additional blood tests.
If we can all collectively agree that you can’t assume someone’s body composition based on their height and weight, we should also all be able to agree that your health is more multifaceted than how much you weigh.
Yet, this is still a controversial idea to some people *sips tea*.

I just got told I was too skinny by a nurse that weighed me prior to seeing a doctor. I weighed 203lbs, 205lbs is overweight for my height. Who knows, maybe she was talking about my datablility and not so much about my health.

@@salmahan Calipers. If it’s only a little subcutaneous fat, the rest is visceral. Also, ultrasound.

Measuring body fat percentage accurately isn't easy. BMI is useful for the majority, but there are outliers. I have a BMI of 27+, yet I think that my avatar makes it clear I have a low body fat percentage.

The BMI is calculated stupidly. It is calculated: mass / height² But it should be mass / height³ Because the mass grows qubicly with height. (Because we grow in all 3 dimensions) That makes the BMI highly unaccurate for everyone that is not excactly average height.

BMI is antiquated and borderline pointless…..Almost as pointless as VShred body type (well maybe not that bad) Health relates to more than just weight and height.

At my height (1.9m/75in) BMI says I should weigh less than 90kg/200 lbs. Okay, fine, I’m pretty fit when I’m 93-95kg/205-210lbs but I’d be happy to be 86-90kg/190-200 lbs. HOWEVER, and this is the absurdity of BMI, I’m not considered underweight until I reach 67kg/148lbs. At my height at 148 lbs, I’m pretty people would hand me a burger and demand I eat it on the spot. The point isn’t just that the underweight range is dangerously too low but that the whole system must be predicated on low muscle mass. If you workout esp if you lift, you (and your doctor) should ignore BMI.

BMI is horrible and needs to be eliminated. I have repeatedly asked my doctors to stop putting it on my after visit summaries. Or rather, on anyone's. I said, "Do you realize that for people with body dysmorphia, this could be very harmful?" My after visit summaries even include unsolicited "tips on how to lose weight". (I'm 5 foot 8, 175 pounds, approximately 15% body fat, and I am intentionally trying to gain weight on a bulk. The whole BMI stuff is terrible.)

Your cartilage doesnt change with muscle. Your knees take more pounding when youre overweight. You can live the life you want but youre overweight.

Agreed no doctor looking at this woman would say she is overweight. BMI is correct on average for majority of people

One doctor told me I was 15 kg overweight, on the obese range, where I was actually 8 kg. Later I found out her assistant made a mistake measuring my height.
