I have watched a lot of Dave's videos, but this is definitely off the mark. Paying $650 a month for rent is not the problem; in fact, it was the only thing that was not a problem! Things could have gone far worse if she rented elsewhere. Her main problem is the credit card debt, which goes hand-in-hand with discipline and spending problems. I paid a higher rent with a slightly higher monthly income, but still manage to save over $1,500 a month, on top of contributing to both retirement and voluntary retirement plans.

So glad that I read Dave's book Financial Peace and others like it 20 years ago! I have had zero debt for years, not even a mortgage payment! This allowed me to get through a 1-year period of unemployment a couple years ago without touching my retirement savings and, thank goodness, not losing my home in the process. I'm dating at this time and it never ceases to surprise me how many women in their 40s or 50s are in terrible financial shape. Some of the ones who think they are doing well are actually not doing much better than treading water. They might even be earning twice as much as me but between spending on consumer goods and servicing debt they have nothing to show at the end of the month. Considering that women live longer than men, they really need a wake-up and reevaluate their situation.

I disagree with Dave on this. He must not have any idea how expensive rent is these days. She said she paid insurance for both her car and her dad’s not only his. So her total rent should have been 500 not 650. Her car payment is the same amount that her parents charge her. And 15k credit card debt? Sighs

As a Moroccan, i am abolutely appalled at the fact that she has to PAY to her own parents rent to live at home. My parents would be overjoyed to have me stay with them here forever and never move out. Any other financial trouble that my parents have ( that they can't deal with themselves ) i can pay, but using your child to pay your bills sounds completely ridiculous to me. Is that a normal thing in America ?

I saw a news article that teachers did not make enough to rent near their school (in Miami) and I can understand why her rent expense is higher than other locations. Cost of living can also be inflated due to location and that can affect more things others cannot understand... Just cut spending and it will improve her situation.

He should have separated her insurance from his cause her rent is not really not really 650 cause part of that is her insurance. And $650 in rent is good depending on where you live. Sure is in Los Angeles...

Even in an expensive state like California, $3,500 is a good income for a single person with no children! She'd be fine if she didn't choose to get a new car with expensive insurance and saddle herself with student loan & credit card debt. If I made that much, I would have been out of my parents' house WAY before I had a fiancee to share expenses with.

my income is similar and rent is higher (living in NYC) and I have money left for food, transportation, and utilities. I cut cable and some entertainment and was able to save up for the emergency fund and payed 3 cards already ( BS #2 half way done, onto school loan yay) I think she should stop paying her father's insurance, she's already paying them rent. She needs to budget better and make her own meals, somethings not right lol

650...of rent to live with your own parents. you can definitely find a room within a house with other roommates for cheaper than that where you are. I live in Michigan, where cost of living isn't high, and even living in one of the more expensive cities (grand rapids) it's possible to find a better deal.

Craig H. Depends on the situation. Before 18, most don't. After 18, some do, some don't - very much depends on circumstances. I know some people who moved back in with parents after college while looking for a job or saving for a house etc, and at first they did not charge rent, but started to charge after a while. I moved back in with my folks after going through a divorce and was rent-free temporarily while I sorted things out and started moving forward in life. Those are two of countless possible scenarios that may warrant temporary rent free lodging.

Hi Dave, I would like to ask, What do you know about old people being scammed by car dealerships in Washington where the state law protects the car industry in fraud? I know personally, of one man who died a few days after signing on the dotted line while under their sweet hand holding. If you respond, I will tell you more. Who will help the old, unwary uneducated victims? Would you be able to speak out for us?

blondeegirl00 I am hoping that there is some sarcasm there. My take home pay is $2615 per month... give or take depending on how many days are in the month. I am a homeowner and live by myself and am currently dumping $1150 per month into the mortgage. Perhaps with children in the picture that would be a struggle, but to say that I am financially struggling at this rate is quite the stretch. Add $600 per month into my monthly income... wow. Just imagine the possibilities.

If she pays off the car the insurance might go down too, she can drop all that extra coverage required when financing assuming her lender required it. In Florida for me insurance is $250 compared to $130 here in NC, that’s bare minimum of you don’t deny uninsured motorists in writing which doesn’t save all that much.

Financial Peace University?... I'm on government cheese. I got ran over by a car at a young age (16). Suffer brain damage. They/Government gave me disability and then switch me to SSI low-income hmm. Anyways, I"m thankful that I'm alive and thank God I've came a long way from the wheel chair. I am actually walking now and learning to read a few chapters per day thru prayers and bibilical readings. I like Dave's straight forward honesty about life...You're the only one that is responsible for yourself and your finances. Long story short, I don't place my trust on family friends reguardless how long I've known them ( people change ) I would like to attend Financial Peace University but I have financial struggle at the moment. I am taking a class per semester with my city community college. I am NOT going into debt to attend Financial Peace University, but I would like to know how much does it cost? I'll save my emergency funds first and then attend. If that's possible. thank you Mr. Financial Pharoah Ramsey :)

I'm a little surprised Dave didn't ask her more about her credit card debts.... like what she was buying. But things aren't quite adding up. The totals she gave for her student loan and credit card payments don't match the balances she claims. Monthly payments on $38k in student loans should only be around $600. The highest WORST CASE SCENARIO for the Minimum payments on $15k in credit cards is only $750. Its as if there's an extra $10k in there she isn't mentioning. Also, it's unlikely that she'd be better off moving out at the moment. That $650 towards "rent" includes her car insurance.
@anpvk7
@anpvk7 7 лет назад
I wonder what kind of loans they were ... I don't think that federal loans would require that big of a minimum payment. I bet she is in default and that's why the minimum is so high. I had a similar student loan balance at the beginning of the year and my minimum was $450/month BEFORE IBR kicked in. I think she's playing down the balances by 10-20K or more.
