Hey Morgan! Loving watching Abby's development and had a thought when you mentioned how dirty she was.. Having seen Toby Dog's apprehension at going to the groomer's.. Now would be a good time to get Abby socialized to the groomer so it isn't as stressful for her as it is for Toby. It will still cause some stress, it always does, but less so for Abby since she'll learn it is an ok place to be very young. If you take her solo and get her comfortable with it, then take Toby with her, he may be able to take cues from her later on and be more comfortable, too.

Was Abby groomed by the breeders at their home, in an environment she was comfortable and familiar with? If so, then if Morgan is going to rely on somebody else to groom her (no shade, grooming two large breed dogs and running a farm, as well as all of the extra work Morgan has to get done would be a massive undertaking!) it is doubly important to send her along for grooming with your trusted groomer of choice, as regularly as you can manage, even if just for a bath and blow-dry. The younger this happens (after their final vaccination,) the better as they will feel more secure and trust the groomer, while the groomer handles them easier when they are smaller. That way, the trust develops before they get larger and stronger.

I’ve been waiting some time to write this, mainly because Morgan constantly shows how much he cares for his animals and how many things he learned regarding livestock guardians and the maremmano-abruzzese sheepdog, so I’m sure he has already thought about this and I didn’t want to be unnecessarily annoying. But under his videos there are so many good suggestions and just a very nice atmosphere with lots of experience sharing and advices, and I think this could be helpful to lots of people. Please pay attention to Abby’s first heats, because it’s very important for female dogs to breed at the right time, and accidents happen. Usually bitches shouldn’t have litters before their third heat, which should be usually around their second year of life. This is, of course, very subjective from dog to dog, especially when it comes at larger breeds such as maremmas. Big dogs generally develop slower, so it’s not unusual to have late first heats. To properly raise puppies, the mother needs to be fully developed herself, not just from a physical point of view but from a psychological too, it’s fundamental. Plus, male dogs become very sly when it comes to females in heat, and I heard many stories from many excellent breeders, with years of experience and meticulously careful planning, just being outsmarted by their dogs, both males and females. So please be sure to plan already where you’re gonna keep Abby in these periods, and that the place you choose is secure and safe and impossible to escape/or to enter. And don’t trust usual signs of fertility/infertility, such as spotting and stuff, because sometimes heats can be very unusual and female dogs can be prolific even after the “preset” time of the estrus. Again, I’m sure Morgan knows already this stuff and I hope to not have been too pedantic, but I’m pointing this out so that it can be useful to everybody (and sorry for my English, it’s not my first language)

*shakes head* that won't work as a bitch box. She will dig out, he will dig in or just go over the wall. Chain link is pretty lousy to contain a determined dog. The best - out of the box livestock guardian dog kennel for when your girl is in heat is a stock trailer. It has a lid, can't be dug out of, can't be dug into, and you can move it away from your male who is only going to have one thing on his mind when she's in standing heat.

To be fair, a topographical map, over a cup of coffee, would have given you all the information you needed to construct the swales, ponds, berms, etc. I think your farm is too much observation and too little engineering. It would take about an afternoon of observation to design (i.e.) a hub-and-spoke animal access/feeding/housing area that would be more cost effective, more efficient, and better able to support future expansion and better serve your animals. You are going to keep spending money on short-term solutions that offer little to no long-term value to your farm the way you're headed. Infrastructure should not be the main duty of a farmer year in and year out. At some point, the design of the farm should be serving you and the animals as well as the financial viability. So, if time is money, I would suggest much less observation and way more design/engineering (somewhat like you did with the pond build). You're missing out on some valuable symbiosis that comes from intelligent design and inter-species dynamics.

However, Morgan does run a very popular video content operation which lets him give advice like "spend years observing". All because she had been a ‘pest control’ dog in her last home (I use the term very loosely!) and was expected to hunt and dispatch, doing her job 24/7. When she was rehomed with us, she didn’t know how to play. The concept was not in her vocabulary, not even in her universe! But when my puppy joined the family a year later, WOW! It was like a whole new world opened up for her. There is just something that dogs learn from each other even better than if a human trainer tries to teach them! So wonderful to see Toby playing with Abby! It’s not that you didn’t let him play before, Morgan, but as a lone dog, he was in-charge of watching over all of the birds and keeping predators away. Now that he’s got that down-pat, the introduction of the puppy has opened his job-world even wider, because he is also teaching Abby manners and socialization skills during play. He is such a clever cookie!

Your wife may tell you she’s not overly concerned about it, but I promise you it bothers her more than she is telling you it does!! Speak to her about it again and really ask her how she feels about your joint priorities, and in particular that one. I would hate for you to feel blindsided when one day she expresses what feel to you like sudden actual frustration with it. 😉😉😬😳😳😊

As I'm sure you are aware, bird flu is going through flocks all over the U.S. right now. I'm glad the dogs are keeping the wild birds away, you don't need that risk. I'd hate for you to have to cull your flocks.

I love to see how these dogs, even at such a young age, have a natural sense of authority and quickly recognise that they only need to come close to, for example, stop a goose from chasing a cat. No barking, just presence.

So nice to see positive reenforcement training on a farm, where often ‘old & outdated ways’ of training are kept (like the debunked theory of dominance & humans being a pack leader etc.). Keeping the dogs fear and pain free in an older tradition (livestock guardian) is so lovely 💛 I think my collie would have all the chickens/ducks kept in one spot & spoil all their roaming fun.

Gotta love the dirt marks on Abby's butt. She's not getting dirty and muddy, she's just trying to fit in with the geese that are also white and dark colored! How Toby dog stays so white and clean and how Abby gets her behind so muddy is beyond me, but it's adorable. Please don't forget to praise Toby dog while you're training Abby (edit I said that last bit before I watched the end of the video where you give him the egg)

Normally I would agree that waiting is good advice but there are food shortages in many Western countries that will likely worsen and prices will continue to rise. People should get started this year and not wait until next. You might not be able to afford or find what you need. This assumes that birds aren't culled en masse due to PCR testing for flu... which will only make the prices and shortages worse.

Not a great idea having an attractive farm for incoming wild birds. Avian flu is real You will need a whole lot more secure place for Abby when she goes into heat. She could easily get bred through those fences even if someone gets over it. Toby will not be stopped by a fence
