About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

A part of being a farmer that isn't talked about: there are a lot of sleepless nights spent caring for sick or baby animals, being woken up by wildlife destroying the property, and worst of all people trespassing for nefarious reasons. Not to mention the weather events.

When planning your next hoophouse, you should look into wind strapping. It goes over the top between the pipes, and is attached at the bottom on each side. Keeps the wind from getting up under the plastic. You could use some ropes for now. Looks like Anne is really close. She is starting to swell 'back there' (RU-vid doesn't like some anatomical specifics). They will get puffy and the muscles on top of the tailhead get real loose. It's hard for me to imagine it's still that cold up there. Going to be 83 today here in Texas. We have already had our last frost.

I know your videos are a bit behind of real time, but man, I dont know how you deal with so much winter and snow, lol. Here in Oregon this weekend we've been cleaning up the garden, preparing the raised beds, building a compost bin, and I already planted a whole bed of beans and something like 20 grow bags of potatoes. Greens are going in this week. I've been working on seed starting in the greenhouse for two weeks already. Daytime temps are starting to trend more into the 60's now. I am so glad to have spring!

I don't know if it's possible but you should try to fit the front half of your tractor in the entrance of the barn. (The lower part where your stuff is stored) so you don't have snow on the dashboard or a ton of it on the seat. Or you could get a vinyl cab enclosure cover for your tractor to keep snow out

Oh gosh, that's such a bummer with the loss of the hoop coop covering. Unfortunately high winds can just rip & shred weathered plastic when it becomes a bit brittle. Hope it didn't take too much to fix in a day
@susanpendell4215
@susanpendell4215 2 года назад
You might have had a snall tornado? That ripped that plastic? There's been so much of that to the west and then storms moving north east that it wouldn't be unheard of. It might explain why only part of the plastic was riped. Whatever it was at least your frame stayed intact and the animals unharmed. That's scary! They had to of been frightened with that ripping and all.

@consciouscollective33
@consciouscollective33 2 года назад
The snow load is putting pressure on that beam running down the middle of your hoop house and stretching the plastic causing a weak area. That's very likely how it ended up being torn down the middle like that.

@elaines5179
@elaines5179 2 года назад
To repair: Test first, put aluminum foil folded over, top and bottom of both edges being re attached, and use a hair flatting iron to repair the rip with heat going through the aluminum to seal the plastic. Practice with shreds of your cover left on the end to check if it will work. You can use a laundry iron in your test cause you just need the heat, before getting a flattening iron. That works generally on plastic bags and to seal mylar bags.. Stop the splitting further first so it doesn't get worse.

I know I made comments before already but❣️😊❣️Every Farmer has his own style, you’d expect that but then comes along someone like you who is very unique, who has this unusual calmness and patience about them and even a animal whispering so to speak, which animals relate to obviously because look how well behaved Toby was from the start as a puppy and now we are seeing the same exact thing with Lady Abby💕😊♥️… She is such a good puppy. Your cats listen to you so well and respond to your orders like I’ve never seen cats especially Little Ginny jumping up right up to your shoulder with just vocal & commands. And your cattle also have come along way is in a short amount of time considering you’ve not had a very long and they’ve only been with you since May of last year. Winter time is not a good time to train animals but you’ve managed very quickly in less than a year‘s time to gain their trust with the exception of one cow….And I might Aaron that pregnant cattle are not very trusting!! That’s the truth!! They are more skittish, Much more Difficult & definitely more cantankerous and not willing to go along with the group. So not knowing which ones were pregnant and which ones weren’t was something you had going against you.… From the very beginning but even then when I think back and how quickly you work those cattle into Preston you to come down from far away in the back pasture and learn that you were just gonna safely bring them into little pens and reward them with the pellets and then move them again and they would have food and water and hay and no harm was going to come to them and they could have all the fresh grass they wanted and they trusted you. I worked on the farm with cattle and we always had some that would run every which direction like you did on day one EVERY SINGLE TIME WE HAD TO MOVE ICATTLE… no matter how many cattle panels we had, Nor HOW MANY MEN & Women & Teens there were, we always, ALWAYS lost COWS IN EVERY DIRECTION YOU LOOKED 😂 😂 😂 😂But not YOU, Morgan …On day one you had one Cow run away…And day two -same cow. And then everything was fine. That’s a pretty darn good record I think. You’re just really really good with the animals and I truly admire you so if anybody can milk a Bear, I think it’s you Morgan & My $$ Is DEFINITELY ON YOU ❣️❣️♥️♥️

THE BALLAD OF GOLD-SHAW FARM (sung to the tune of the "Beverly Hillbillies" theme song) Let me tell you all a story 'bout Gold-Shaw farm, Way up north in Peacham where the weather is not warm. Purchased by a couple who came from a city life, The fellow's name was Morgan, and Allison his wife. The place just wasn't livable and needed much repair, They looked around for hired help to fix their Vermont lair, When they brought on workmen to go mend their broken house, The contractor had ripped them off because he was a louse. Morgan turned his efforts to start building up his land, Planting lots of chestnut trees in lots of wiggly bands, Then he dug a wading pond for his new geese and ducks, followed by a hoop coop that just wasn't strong enough. People watched him on RU-vid to see his homestead grow, Working hard and harvesting the seeds that he did sow, Then he purchased cattle to go grazing in his field, Breeding them to make sure that a profit they would yield. He started spending much more time with RU-vid every day, Building his subscribers to above 500 k, We gave him lots of good advice to help his knowledge grow, He didn't want it and continued making videos. When we saw his highland cows all laying in the barn, We noticed all the lumps of poop that they were resting on, No cow should have to lay upon their own wet smelly dung, But have a place that's dry and clean with calves to be among. Be advised that sickness comes along with herd neglect, And spending time on lesser things means you have no respect, For the lives your cows give up so you can sell your beef, But there's still time to change your ways and take away their grief. We can't say with certainty which way the farm will go, But before we end this tale there's one thing you should know, Just remember farmers give their herds priority, to give them care with cleanliness to live in dignity.

Sounds amazingly normal for dogs and homesteads. Other livestock and LGDs, in my limited opinion, are very unconcerned about things humans find to be disastrous. There's still snow to play and frisk about in, and interesting smells and things to taste. Can't let good morning romp times be spoilt because of a little problem. The geese were still there and there didn't seem to be much snow on the ground inside the house, so it wasn't as bad as it might have been....

Wow you have a lot of self control (or you did a lot of re-shoots). ;) I would have been cursing up a storm had I seen what happened to the hoop house. Best of luck with the repair. Hopefully when you build the more permanent structure you use a heftier covering. I know a lot of plastic products get very brittle in cold temps, which is why I'm guessing the tarp you used ripped instead of just coming loose. On the cattle business. I think you already watch White House on the Hill videos. They have quite a few good videos on cows. As you've learned through your trials and tribulations, bovines are a LOT challenging than avians.
