My Favorite Death Metal Albums

Because the internet doesn't have enough lists. I've decided to make a few rambley lists of my favorite albums. This is a list of my favorite death metal albums. Because I lack a musical background in an academic sense, my vocabulary is pretty simplistic and vague when describing actual music. Me big dum dum. Because of this I've decided to describe how these albums made me feel or where I was in the chronology of my metal listenership, rather than an in-depth technical breakdown of said albums.
In retrospect, the majority of these are kinda no-brainer, "starter pack" albums, but I've never claimed to be Mr. Underground AF. I'm a sucker for nostalgia. I'll probably put out a follow up someday to convey my tastes a bit more clearly. This was just something I wanted to put out while I work on more videos talking about different types of metal.

I'm someone who's really more into Thrash Metal, Speed Metal and old school US Power Metal (i.e. Metal Church, Sanctuary, Savatage, Crimson Glory, Omen, etc), but for a good number of years, Death Metal was one of my main go-to genres and still is when I'm in the mood for it and will go to a Death Metal show if the tour bill looks awesome. My person favorites are as followed: Death - Leprosy (Death is my favorite band of all time, so I hold all of Chuck's music in high regard) Carcass - Heartwork Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Inhumanity Obituary - Cause of Death Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding Entombed - Left Hand Path Dying Fetus - Wrong One To Fuck With Bolt Thrower - ...For Victory Possessed - Seven Churches Massacre - From Beyond Exhumed - Gore Metal Suffocation - Pierced From Within Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked Origin - Antithesis Autopsy - Severed Survival

Very interesting you went with Harvest Floor and mad respect for that. It was Monolith for me but I can definitely appreciate some of their earlier stuff. Also I'm glad that they got mentioned at all. Most lists like this don't include CD, at least not from what I've seen.

Here is my top 10 list: 1. Brutality - Screams of Anguish Perfect mix between sheer heaviness and technicality. Every song is a lowkey to highkey masterpiece. The instrumentals are a little useless but they don't hurt the album as a whole. 2. Gorement - The Ending Quest Unlike most OSDM albums this one has a melancholic atmosphere instead of an infernal one. 3. Death - Individual Thought Patters Technical Death Metal that's to the point with some of the best bass works in all of metal. It may come off as overly wanky but I like the fact that it never lets up. 4. Autopsy - Severed Survival Absolutely rancid atmosphere and again phenomenal bass by DiGiorgio 5. At The Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours Innovative MeloDeath with some violin solos. 6. Edge of Sanity - Crimson More melodic than other entries plus one of the best growls I have ever heard from both Dan Swanö and Mikael Akerfeldt. 7. Pan.Thy.Monium - Khaooohs and Kon-Fu-Sion Old Amorphis meets Pink Floyd and free jazz. Great Piece of old school weirdness and experimentation. 8. Demilich - Nespithe Talking about old school weirdness. Mind melting riffs that sound like they're backwards jazz with distortion. 9. Entombed - Left Hand Path I mean it's Entombed. Nothing more to say. 10. Pestilence - Consuming Impulse Probably the most orthodox and old school album on this list and an absolute festival of riffs. Martin Van Drunen's vocals are perfect.

Loving these videos. I can totally relate to the idea of music offering a young person a sense of empowerment and escape from an oppressive upbringing and environment. I grew up in a similar household and I can still remember the moment for me when I was young and listening to Today's the Day: In the Eyes of God (I know its not Death Metal) when I had this type of eye opening moment. Its hard to describe but the feeling of freedom like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders when I rebuked all that religious BS and just allowed myself to be me . The realization that I wasn't a bad person and it was ok to just be happy with who I was. I honestly think this music saved my life. Anyway, loving this channel. Looking forward to more vids!

I'm a fairly religious dude, I believe all the mumbo jumbo the book preaches, but I fucking love metal, it feels like the more anti Christian a band the better and more brutal they are. Its addicting, One of my favorite bands is Aeon, they literally have a song titled, "God Gives Head in Heaven" but its so fucking good. In my head God just laughs at this shit and thinks it hilarious. I hope one day I can find a like minded Christian, doubt that'll ever happen. I'm sure I'll be crucified before then.

Im a Christian also. I own a vintage store and I buy/sell/wear shirts with with lots of metal bands. Some people and or other Christians would be offended but i know what i believe and the images or lyrics has no bearing on me. The music does not have any sway over somebody who knows who they are.

Nice list! Lots of overlap with mine as far as classic old school death metal albums go! I lean pretty heavy on that style or the death/thrash death/doom stuff. (Death/Doom is a whole other list for me, I dig that general vibe and sound a lot) The more melodic and tech/death stuff I usually don't get into. (barring Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverance... great albums, great band, and Chuck was good people to boot), That said I absolutely can appreciate the technical proficiency/songwriting chops of the acts who do either well! Really enjoyed this and your USBM video, they would both make fairly solid primers for curious people looking to dip their toes into extreme metal and listen to some different stuff.

@@eddymetal excellent, very glad to hear it. If you’ve already heard of any of these acts then that’s a good thing in my book, means they’re not as unknown to others as I’d originally believed. I would first and foremost mention one of the most important and least known bands that I believe is coming out with some of the most intriguing blackened death in recent memory: Decoherence, a 3 man effort, of whom take after DarkSpace and are in some sense the spiritual successor to that act. Menacing and spiraling walls of riffethy whirlwinds whirring from a voided reality, wherein destructive incomprehensibilities of alien physics and beings permeate the vacuous scape of a hellacious spacetime, exalting the harrowing world devouring events transpiring in the thematics of this triad of audibly vorpal connoisseurs of aural maelstroms. One of the most underrated bands to existence outside of this corporeal plane. Decoherence are a mandatory course to take for this semester if you haven’t already. Panzerfaust is another must listen for any black metal fan, or any “music” fan in general. Greens what I had to say about their recent album series from not too long ago to give you an idea of what they’re about: “I haven’t felt like I’ve been able to actively participate in listening to music as though I was an audience member in a while. @panzerfaustblackmetal is some of the most engaging music I’ve ever heard in that regard. I cannot think of a single thing I can complain about or critique with this band. Every moment of practically every release from them is a journey through&through, front to back. The narrative world building and visualization through the wall of sound that is Suns Of Perdition chapters 1&2 are what I would consider practical masterpieces. It is so good with thematics that are so compelling and true to the source material it is inspired by, that I would say they are pretty much flawless within the vein of metal at least. Very quickly this band has barged their way into my top 3 acts. I’m sure I’ve spent close to a dozen hours over the past week just mulling over the sounds of war produced by these 4 Canadian 1920AD gigachads. All of it, down to the drum fills, speaks of ruinous world affairs from a lens seated in the perspective of a god of man. It is angelic and empyrean sounding, yet brutish and wrathful with sample selection of actual iconic grueling sounds and dialogue excerpts of early 20th century conflict. Their performances make it look effortless which is all the more impressive when on stage considering just how pristine it sounds just as well as the record mixing. They perform with resolve, deliver the soul and essence of their work neatly; I haven’t even seen them live yet and feel fairly confident in saying that just purely based on what I’ve seen so far. I can’t understate how blown away I am by this group with such unexpected, unconventional and original combinations of progressive note selections and dynamics in tandem with some of the deepest rooted elements of black metal that make it what it is. I loved what I heard so much from these boys that I took one listen of chapter 2 and immediately ordered the physical copy. Easily the second most barbaric thing to come out of Canada besides the mosquitos. “Panzer is the boot stamping on a human face forever.” This is the most blackened history class of all time.” Beyond that, Shaarimoth is another great BDM group that are so esoteric it’s hard to not take them seriously regardless of who is listening. Very tribal song writing with pressing lyrical and vocal delivery. Barús is another small group I’m very fond of that are in a similar vein to Shaarimoth, but they favor Progressive elements in their song writing over being overtly esoteric or tribal-going than that of Shaarimoth. Similar production and vibes between them though. Convulsing is a one man BDM act from Australia who’s won my title for favorite album of all time recently, that being Grievous from the man. Some of the most memorable and compelling riffs I’ve heard from a single act. Couple other quick mentions are Esoctrilihum & Akhlys. It’s frightening how ethereal both of these acts get with their production and philosophy behind writing. Genuinely otherworldly releases from both. If I think of more I’ll either edit this comment or make another.

So i grew up in a Christian home too. I hated it, and at the time i rebelled in a completely opposite direction from what my folks stood for. Your upbringing seems like your parents were extremists that made you despise God. In my case, my parents were strict but very loving/accepting. I was in bands, listened to music my parents hated, did drugs etc. When i grew up got married, have a family, i was actually thankful for my upbringing and returned to Christianity, even though its nothing like my folks version of believing in Jesus. I guess i wrote all that to say, dont let your shitty upbringing keep you from looking at both sides of the aisle when it comes to God/Jesus and the devil. Your parents did the opposite of what they tried to do. Dont let it destroy your journey though.

I finally got around to giving them another chance and listened to Those Once Loyal maybe 5 or so years ago, and was kicking myself. Not sure wtf I heard in high school. Maybe it was a one off, shitty song. It was so long ago that I can't remember specifically what I heard to initially turn me off to them. I personally adore the drumming on all of Ulcerate's works but their last full length "stare into death and be still" really knocked it out of the water for me. As an ex-drummer (school and life got in the way sadly) I am truly mesmarised my jamie's unreal mastery, the technical yet tight sounding riffs that seem to flow seamlessly throughout the songs is quite something. On the more blackened death side of things, both "svn eater" and "the broken seal" by "lvcifyr" really encapsulate the raw, demonic sound signature I've come to expect from the genre. My personal favourite indie gem and a band I truly cherish is "Λ S T R Λ". You can go back and forth about how much of it is avant-garde/atmospheric black metal and how much is death but I'll say this, I have yet to come across anything that blends the cosmic, esoteric vibes and the sickeningly raw guttoral vocals like Λ S T R Λ has. "Deathspell omega" seemed to scratch my itch for more experimental, avant-garde style black metal along with "blut aus nord" but Λ S T R Λ really has that unique sound signature that is on a league of its own. Favourite tracks would be (among the 2 ep's and 2 singles they've released so far) "Техногенное солнце" from their 2017 ep titled "УЗБ-76" and their 2018 single "А стены всё шепчут..." . Give them a listen if you want to discover some fresh stuff, your 3 vids have lead me down quite the rabbit hole, I've discovered some great stuff thanks to it. Keep up the good work brother, looking forward to your future projects 💪

Cannibal Corpses is generally awesome. Gallery, Tomb and the Bleeding are mighty good Hate Eternal. I, Monarch is amazing. Eriks vocals kick major ass. Immolation. Unholy Cult is freaking badass. Dolans vocals are awesome. Nile. Their first 3 albums are classics. The rest are forgettable. Origin. Informis... Hell yeah! Hell freakn yeah! Mortician. Cool, surprisingly catchy music. Could do with out all the samples that seem to drag on... Goatwhore. Eclipse of Ages into Black. The only good Goatwhore album in my opinion but man is it good. Deicide. Not a huge fan of their albums because they are plagued with fizzy tone But l love their live shows on RU-vid. Good stuff.

Random question for anybody bored and willing to answer, am I the only one who just could never get into Cattle Decapitation or most other Death/Grind acts for that matter? There are a ton of really solid bands that do a fairly equal sort of give and take between the two genres/styles but none of them really sound as good to my ear as they would had they focused way more heavily in one direction or the other and just threw in occasional elements of the other style in spots. Any death/grind bands you think might break this weird mental/aural block I have? TLDR: I love death metal and grind but when bands try to do anything close to a 50/50 split between the two it just doesn't quite grab me. Anybody else like this and/or do you have any recommendations that may break this weird mental block of mine?
@eddymetal
@eddymetal 2 года назад
Hmmm. Cattle Decap and Carcass are the only bands that come to mind regading that 50/50 fusion, and really they only strike that balance on once album each imo. Pig Destroyer are grindcore for sure, definitely not a 50/50, but they always gave me death metal vibes. Vermin Womb and Benighted are two sick bands that fuse death metal and grindcore, but they mix black metal into their sound as well. Idk, might not be exactly what you're asking for - but that's about as close as I think I can get off the top of my head.
@nunya6260

Assück, Boiled In Bleach, Infernal Coil, Triumvir Foul, Pissgrave, Gridlink, Dragged Into Sunlight, Pseudogod, Vermin Womb, Of Feather And Bone, Ripped To Shreds, Knelt Rote, Belphegor, and Mutilatred. Some of these are debatable but they also have death grind moments so enjoy. Regardless they're good bands.

I can't say I've heard of him, but I'll check him out when I get a chance. Always nice to have a new source for finding new music. When I was a youngster I was all about Masterofreality07 but that channel got nuked when I was in high school. I used metal archives a bit then, but I use it a bunch now. As far as channels, these days I find a bunch of new stuff from: Rare Metal Albums, OdiumNostrum, Greg Biehl, Just Underground, Black Metal Promotion, Atmospheric Black Metal Albums, and Symphonic Black Metal Promotion. Only recently started checking out New Wave of Oldschool Thrash Metal, but that seems like a sick channel so far.

I'm not super deep into sludge, though I like Acid Bath, Eyehategod, and Down (if they count; Down sounds a bit different). I often forget about sludge to be honest. I was actually kicking myself for not mentioning any sludge in my first video after you asked me about Acid Bath on my USBM video. Haven't heard of Shrum or Abuse, but it's been a long time since I broke into new territory (as far as really digging deep into a subgenre I'm less entrenched in). @eddymetal
@eddymetal 2 года назад
"Definitely" huh? Tells me all I need to know about you regarding the matter. Christianity is by definition a cult of Christ. Even if we're being lazy with our understanding of the term "cult" the particular sect of Protestantism that my family subscribes to is that of the Southern Baptists - which is commonly accepted as a cult. My anti-religious stance is a core part of my character, so it will be apparent to some on occasion. But my intentions in uploading videos is to talk about some music rather than discuss/debate religion. What other people believe doesn't matter to me anyways, so long as it doesn't impact my life - so naturally, I don't care to get into some big argument over it.
@InveterateMendaciousness
@InveterateMendaciousness 2 года назад
And I will now disregard your entire statement due to: inept zealousness. The fact you’ve just said this confirms the occult nature of your belief. No ideal and grounded Christian with an acceptable moral prowess to that of which is preached by the modicum of valuable teachings presented in biblical canon would ever say some shit like this. You’re an idiot and a heckler for trying to terrorize people with your forewarnings. And FYI Laveyan Satanism, if that is what you are referring to, is not a cult. it’s a joke. Literally. It is a mock religion lol. If what you mean by “satanism” is theistic/orthodox Luciferianism, or traditional satanism, then yes that is a very real and problematic occultic theology. Despite this, 90% of the “satanists” you meet are either unorthodox or Laveyan, meaning they do not believe in a literal Lucifer, Satan or incarnate manifestation of evil.

Van Halen could 1000% not outplay guys like Tosin Abasi of Animas As Leaders, Dean Lamb of archspire, nor Michael Hoggart of Ulcerate. Would these players exist without the relevance and influence of players like Halen & Hendrix? No. However, They would undoubtedly crush them in a writing match in this modern era of menacing theory-driven stringed-lexicon. Again you’ve proven yourself an illiterate & moronic Neanderthal for being deliberately ignorant of the heaving vastness of technicality that permeates the upper echelons of metal.
