Blackened Death Metal: A Blend Without Boundaries 

Music creates the idea of genres, genres don't create the idea of music.

Blackened death is my favorite extreme metal subgenre. Thank you for the research, it is not easy to find its origin on the web.

In my oppinion Goatwhore can be considered as "extreme metal". I cannot put it in any genre. Their music is just pure, primitive metal. Btw excellent videos!

Great video man. For maybe an existing or concise tag for “Atmospheric/Progressive Black/Death” I would suggest “Dissonant Death” (or “Dissonant Black” if you wanna to mostly refer to the black side). Also, a band I’d have liked to be covered in that area would be Suffering Hour. Also somewhere, I’m not sure where, Angelcorpse might have should’ve been mentioned. They’ve always been the Blackened Death metal band to me.

My favourite genre of Portal offshoots are the ones that, for whatever reason, Spotify calls ""voidgaze"" and other places probably just call blackened death but theres usually elements of ambient and doom in there too. By that i mean Abyssal and Tchornobog.

I think the confusion that comes with the title "Blackened Death Metal" is on first impression the term hints at these bands are Death Metal bands primarily but with Black Metal influences or elements. Where it get's confusing is majority of "Blackened Death Metal" bands are closer to Black Metal atheistically and musically then they are Death Metal. In reality, most "Blackened Death Metal" bands are Black Metal bands but with heavier riffs and lower growls that would be more associated with Death Metal. Example, it just feels more justified to see bands like Belphegor, Behemoth or Goatwhore to be on a tour with bands like Mayhem, Darkthrone and Immortal then it would be seeing those same "Black Death" bands on tour with groups like Dying Fetus, Obituary and Suffocation. In reality, most "Blackened Death Metal" bands are actually "Deathened Black Metal" but the term just never took off.

Since you mentioned Myrkskog i figure itd be worth throwing in how Emperor and Dimmu both evolved and inspired some of those other bands. Just like how Behemoth inspired a more brutal form of blackened death metal, those other brought out more melodic death metal bands like Cob, The Covenant, Keep of Kalesin, Graveworm just to name a few.

When I tried to make a blackened death metal playlist, I noticed the subtle stylistic differences between certain bands that kind of confused me. Then this video appeared in my recommendations and it helped me out a little bit. Anyways, my favorite "microgenre" of blackened death metal would have to be the Revenge style of war metal. Now, most war metal bands, such as Proclamation, Caveman Cult, or Beherit, bore me and end up being background noise, devoid of any emotion. Certain bands, however, have a distinct ferocity that other war metal bands lack. Revenge, Pissgrave, Vermin Womb, and Tetragrammicide are the ones that come to mind. These bands are fucking intense and I love their specific style that blends war metal with grindcore.

Calling Sacramentum black/death is a big stretch. It’s true that they were influenced by Gothenburg melodeath to an extent but they were mostly black metal.

I feel like this video did a good job on war metal because I feel like blasphemy is a really really huge factor in the war metal scene. Growing up on war metal I feel like it deserves more music but less attention to fit its vary militaristic style and elitist types of people in the scene

A band called Haunter has used deathend black metal as something to describe their music on their spotify profile. I do not count it as a genre myself tho. I would agrue that blackend death is death metal with a bit of a black metal influence, like death metal with black metal vocals or very atmospheric death metal with a little bit of black metal riffing mixed in. Pretty much something like 80%death 20%black. Black/death is probably around 50% black metal or more and probably would include the non existing genre of deathend black metal because actually calling something deathend sounds pretty bad.

This conversation gets WAY more confusing when it comes to Brutal Death…Grindcore…slam…goregrind. I just can’t figure it out. So I just put all of those bands into the death metal category. I don’t see how Hemdale is in the same category as napalm death..but all can be considered grindcore.

I tend to sepparate between war metal and bestial black metal. While both them are under the banner of black/death metal for me bestial black metal are band such as archgoat and beherit, and war metal are band such as blasphemy and impiety.

At least towards music there is always some subjectiveness in the genres. Outside of what instruments are used and the vocal tones or lyrical style, the real objective features are hard to quantify like looking at the audio spectrum. "An objective piece of information, therefore, needs either to be the whole truth and at least be unbiased or balanced, whereas a subjective point of view is biased because it is either not the complete picture or it is merely a viewpoint or expression of feelings."
