So, it’s very funny you say that. Weiss and Benioff sat down for a coffee with George R. R. Martin to get his permission/get him on board with their attempt to adapt it, and he asked them who Jon Snow’s mother was (since that hadn’t been revealed in the books). They answered correctly, so Martin gave them the green light. So, they were asked specifically about a huge plot reveal. They were not asked if they shared Martin’s approach to storytelling once it got to the point where they had to do the narrative heavy lifting.

no, not really.. tho I totally get your meaning as it's used basically as an absolutely disingenuous debate tactic by many on the right these days to attempt to discredit and deflect from the actual debate.. (it's basically a form of the grade school playground comeback of "I know you are but what am I?" and as about as effective despite the sense of self satisfaction they derive from it, lol) but it's actually a thing in the classification scales of the political spectrum.. there's the left right (or sometimes given as "progressive/conservative") political scale and then there's the authoritarian/personal liberty (sometimes given as authoritarian/democratic or libertarian (not the political party)) one as well, joined as to where someone falls on the political spectrum.. you can be a leftist authoritarian.. which is what we see in stalin's and pol pot's communist regimes.. look up both the wikipedia articles on "the political compass" and "the political spectrum" as a start... so, it is a "thing" tho to be honest, I don't really see it as viable as anything but a general introductory classification tool not to be given much weight and there are countless variations.. but, it is a "thing" and you can certainly hold either left or right ideals and be an authoritarian as authoritarian isn't strictly beholden to either and these academic classifications are fairly devoid and divorced from the usage you describe entirely, as they are simply bad faith debate tactics which is ramp up the rhetoric to the absurd and hope if ya do it long enough, it sticks... the people using it the way you describe aren't using it at all properly of course, it's just a cop out, a deflection as it's been a recent trend for awhile for those arguing in bad faith on the right.. it's funny how they complain that they are being infringed on and persecuted but are the first ones to involve themselves in other people's lives with legislation on how they are supposed to live... such as trying to say the Nazi's were actually socialists when they weren't except in name (national socialist party) only as the party they had overtaken was originally socialist but then purged by the right winged fascists by the 20's... sure the name socialist remained but there weren't any socialists or socialist ideals left in the party when the nazi's came to power, lol. the name never changed due to branding basically.. it's funny also because when the Nazi's were in power, they literally outlawed socialism and jailed and executed socialists and communists specifically.. hell in 1936 alone there were over 10k arrests for "illegal socialist activity". funny, that.. 🤔 it's like if a bunch of KKK members joined the "Pro Miscegenation League", kicked out anyone who wasn't of the KKK ideology but kept the name.. or tangentially similar to how Scientology bought the Cult Awareness Network.. I mean... lol. it's all simply propaganda.. an attempt to rewrite and gaslight.

Anyone who has a problem with Heimdal being black but says NOTHING about Sif being a brunette obviously does not know what they are talking about. Heimdall being the "whitest/brightest" Asir was a description, whereas Sif's hair is integral to her lore. It is a little sad that God of War, of all franchises, got this correct but the MCU did not.

@@samuellancaster6487a better example of how they don’t care about accuracy and it’s all their own views is the hate the Loki show got. Like they showed an alternative universe version of Loki being a woman and they lost their minds. But in the actual myths, Loki wasn’t gender fluid his entire biological sex was fluid as he not only fathered multiple beings, but also was impregnated and the mother of one. By including “female Loki” they were actually making it closer to the source material.

Something that's really interesting to me about a lot of these "troll" comments is how they fall into what Dan Olson of Folding Ideas called _The Thermian Argument_ * - a rhetorical fallacy that insists fictional "realities" exist entirely separately to actual _reality_ and that therefore only Watsonian justifications for things like in-text prejudice should be considered. It's a fallacy that ignores the reality that all art is created by people who also exist in our reality, and that we as people cannot escape the influences of our world's history or the biases that our society socialises us into. Basically it's an intellectually lazy way of dismissing a _Doylist_ discussion of authorial intent/execution in _art as a communication device_ as just someone "getting hung up on fiction" because thinking about how art influences our perceptions of our own place in an unequal society is uncomfortable. Also, "blueanon"? Good grief. That's such a classic rhetorical trick of "I'm going to label you as being _the bad word_ so I can automatically dismiss your argument out of hand." I remember someone observing how the people now loudly complaining about _the curtains being blue_ these days seem blind to how _the curtains were RED_ for most of their media diets growing up. Art can't escape being political, but people only notice once it's politics they disagree with. TL:DR Incuriousness is wildly irritating to encounter in the wild. Some people are shockingly committed to being philosophical Teflon. *Video link for reference: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AxV8gAGmbtk.html

4:20 With the forgotten realms comment, I agree with Mike. I've only DM'd a module once (Dragon of Icespire Peak and the supllimentary modules) and I had to research quite a bit to make some quests work, and it doesn't tell you nearly enough about Neverwinter other than a vague description. I know nothing of races, notable factions/organisations, anything about Lord Neverember. Even after I had researched the city, I had one player who would bring stuff up about the city or ask a question about it and I didn't know what to say and I didn't want to spend time during the session to research because it would bog down the session. I don't know how similar this is to other modules, but it'd be nice if there was more info for the DM.

I got into an argument a little while ago with someone who was ranting about safety tools as well. And consent forms. And it's ludicrous. If you don't like those things, please consider movies and television for a moment. Those things mention things like violence, language, nudity, drugs, etc etc etc. People like to know what to expect before deciding what kind of media they want to consume. There are movies I've hated that I would've chosen not to see if I'd known some details about them beforehand. (Hereditary. Effing not for me, and I wish I'd known about the thing that made me hate it before I wasted my time on it.) If you think less of people who don't want certain things in a game they're playing in, wouldn't you want to not play with them? This is just pragmatic, folks. I was also going to mention Thought Slime here! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying that channel. I discovered TS right around when lockdown started in 2020, and I've learned so much because of them.

re: the tiberius video, that was how i found your channel. i think it IS important to talk about, since 1. he's gone on to scam the community, something that could be avoided in the future if people know what's up, and also 2. in dnd forums one of the main things i see new players and dms asking about is not feeling like they have the right to leave or kick someone out when they're stuck in a group or with a player that makes everyone super uncomfortable. seeing one of the most famous dnd groups out there have those same issues and have to address it, and seeing how amazing that group became without that uncomfortable element? i think that's really important for new people to see and know about. i'm not here to argue him being a bad person or troubled person or anything else; at the end of the day he no longer fit the group and he was making it uncomfortable for literally every other member of the group. that alone, regardless of reason, is enough to ask someone to leave, or consider asking someone to leave. you also approached the topic with a lot of grace, and stood up for his play choices in other videos, which is its own valuable lesson: it's easy to see how common sentiment back-filled his play choices once people decided they didn't like him, and i think it's important to be aware of our own biases there and how it can impact group perception of someone in a setting like a dnd group. i think it's an important series of events to discuss and i'm glad you did.

Just a quick suggestion for next year, if you do these videos again - If you're concerned about people going after and harassing the negative commenters, maybe censor their names? I don't think it's that big a deal - I don't see most people who do comment response videos who include negative comments worrying about that happening - but it is a step you could take if you're worried about it.

It’s a good note, I could probably be more conscious of the size of my platform. Unless I get a comment that inspires something I really want to talk about, like Leftist Slime, I’m not rushing to do another of these videos. But I did want to release at least one compilation of crappy comments, so I can refer back to it as-needed to illustrate a point in a future video. But if I refer to a specific negative comment going forward, I agree it would likely be wise to censor their username.

7:50 Small correction: book Aslan does imply he is literally Jesus Christ, but in Narnia he takes the form of a lion. I call this small because it only strengthens your point, the subtext becomes text in later books when he creates a paradise for the dead characters who know and love him.

Hi Mike, I'm sorry you got some terrible comments throughout the year, but I think you handled it well. After watching this video, you became one of my favorite political D&D RU-vidrs alongside Tulok. It's crazy how people don't see how there's actual politics in D&D. Rime of the Frost Maiden had a whole side story about a mayoral race, and ever since Mines of Phandelver, there's been factions in the game that could be viewed as political parties or representing political ideologies. It be cool if someone did a video showing all the politics in actual D&D, or just showing which factions would represent which ideologies.

"If a player can't handle the concept of a fantasy game, then they shouldn't be playing it." Is a wild take when half the horror stories about ttrpgs found online are about how someone was not given the tools needed to know what the concept was. Tools like consent forms. How am I supposed to know I shouldn't play at your table because you want to include topics that may be harmful to me if you don't tell me those topics will show up? But also if i want to play a fun game with my friends where bad things in real life don't happen, because it is in fact a fantasy game, who cares? Because the only people who matter in this are me and my friends. Edit: As a long time Thought Slime watcher it's always so nice to know her content continues to reach the people who's content I enjoy otherwise unrelated. Especially because every once and a while they pull out a deep Canadian cut that reminds me there is in fact a universal Canadian experience. I've never been more horrified and deeply nostalgic over a weird Canadian Cartoon none of my friends in the states have heard of as I was during the cyber six video.

Yeah, honestly the lack of safety tools, and even disdain for them, tells me right away those people would not be the sort I even want to share a table with. It’s not that they aren’t entitled to their own style of fame play, it’s that I can’t imagine someone thinking it’s ok to mess with my phobia and still think I would be their friend and come play dnd with them week after week. Safety tools are important because, socially, you still want to be a good person to the other players you share that table with. It’s a game and a game should always have tools in place for you to check in with the most important aspect of that, the comfort of your friends so you all are having fun and decompressing, not stressing each other out for no good reason. Now, make no mistake here, I am not against tackling difficult topics in the venue of a ttrpg. In fact, I love roleplay heavy/ stroytelling style of games and have and do play in ones that tackle big and complicated subjects. But also, these same games are ones where a ton of communication goes on above table to make sure we are all still having fun here and things aren’t hitting so close to home that they may cause bleed over to one’s psyche and be detrimental beyond the game table. It’s still a game and should stay that way, even if we are telling a story about difficult things. But yeah, that’s more of less how I think of those who refuse to honor and have disdain for safety tools and pretty much why I wouldn’t want to play with those who would leave comments like those you got. Not that I think they would want to play with me either. Pretty much those comments and my comment here just tell each other that we would clash and probably shouldn’t play games with each other. Which is perfectly valid. I don’t have to and they don’t have to. But yeah, just my thoughts when those comments from that video were covered.

This video really makes me question RU-vid as a platform, though. Is this a good way to handle disagreement, or am I just facilitating people talking past each other? Maybe I need a break from all this. I think I'll delete RU-vid off my phone for a while and see what happens.

Duuuuude it makes me so happy that that community post's replies led you to Thought Slime! Makes sense why there was that "foreshadowing" cameo in your recent video hehehe. If you're eager for more my #1 favourite leftist creator is F.D Signifier hands-down. He doesn't only do political content but almost everything does have some political analysis in it. After him maybe That Dang Dad. I get the same vibe from you and That Dang Dad a lot and think you'd enjoy the videos, they've helped me grow a lot as a person myself and I'd love to recommend his work for everyone. Looking forward to the future of this channel! 😄

It’s so interesting how it’s just fantasy when it’s convenient and meant to be 100% historically accurate when it’s convenient. We’re not supposed to have any kind of deeper subtext that reflects the real world because “it’s just a fantasy”. But if you included POC and LGBT characters in your own story and not have it be a big deal, suddenly that’s bad because it’s historically inaccurate. I made up the world, I get to choose the history.

I will be honest, I see these videos every so often but when a content creator I see does this type of thing, it feels boring. From what I'm seeing of you picking apart some of these comments instead of just being "Yeah well haha I don't care" on repeat as other CCs I've seen done, this is such a great way to do such a video. It's a lot more fun to watch and feels more inclusive of those watching.

Right now we have two videos, one about the nice complimenting comments and one about the inane thought defyingly stupid comments, I think it would be really nice to have a video in the same fashion about comments that have legitimate critiques and constructive feedback in a sort of response that would blend the ground between the two videos. Don't take this the wrong way I love all of the content you make this is just an idea that popped into my head and I thought I would share it because your one of the few youtubers who readthrough and respond to comments. In retrospect this comment is way too long. (probably the wrong too

I'm glad to see comments like this that just ramble onwards in completely the wrong place, I once uploaded a random low effort replay from yugioh master duel right after it came out that got a lot of attention and had a ton of people complaining in my comments about modern yugioh's fast and explosive pace and I always love seeing how insane they can sound especially on one of the most back and forth games I'd played, it makes me want to make higher effort videos so I can hopefully see those more than a stray nice comment or very rare low effort transphobic dogwhistle to ban.

This is really good video to showcase some common biases in the ttrpg community but I do have one wish if there's ever another video like this. Please block out the commentors' names. There's no need to leave them visible. No matter how much you have faith in your community and viewers, someone may see this and, despite the disclaimer Not To go after these people, will do just that. The best way to make sure it doesn't happen is to paint over the names - well, second best but I like these kinds of videos and think these comments do deserve to get clowned on. Also there is no reason to leave the names visible, other than it's easier to address them and that can be done even without the names. I really enjoy your videos. They are entertaining and very helpful and I love how willing you are to learn and be a better person. Wish more people were as open-minded and kind. Keep up the good work!

The allegation that all fantasy settings are somehow deeply related to the far too vague and expansive Medieval 'era' is one of my personal pet peeves. Even when you can point out the costumes in use, the architecture, or any other detail is based on a different, more modern era (or even an older era) that will be discounted by those who insist fantasy = Medieval. Those who allege that, though, are often the same ones who will insist Medieval = Dark Ages along with a host of other myths about that time period which have been debunked repeatedly for decades (and are only held as true by those who have no interested in actually ever looking at real history or even exploring any actual facts and will declare history as 'boring' or irrelevant). Bah.... this is a bigger pet peeve for me than the use or your instead of you're, or any of the other commonly used homophones or near/sorta sound alike words, such as moot/mute.

@melinnamba

People who complain about politics in their game don't realize, that politics is just a fancy word we use for the process of people getting together, deciding to form a community and organizing that community. As soon as people stop living in groups, we can get rid of politics. If the people crying about politics being everywhere, where just a bit more educated on the topic and would just care a smidge more about it, they'd realize, that it's not politics they are against, but that they just don't like where the wind of change is blowing.

For what it is worth, I am a moderate conservative and I like your videos. I find your claim that "Capitalism sucks" interesting but acknowledge what you mean by that. Personally, I call what most Left-leaning individuals call "late-stage capitalism" a form of Mercantilism as that is a more accurate description of what is wrong with modern economies, but most people sadly don't understand what I am referencing. Regardless, keep up the good work!

Any time a RU-vidr says they're going to read negative comments: Me, thinking about every time I left a grumpy comment on someone's video: "Uh oh." The RU-vidr starts reading the comments: Me: "Oh, right. Batshit assholes exist. Okay, yeah. It was never about me."
