#thenealshomestead #orka #produce #vegetables #garden It's Okra time of year and the garden is producing. If you don't like the way the way okra can be slimy you will love my method of cooking it.
Most people that do not like Okra, it is because of the slime. We have always cooked it this way. Instead of standing and stirring, I cook it on low and the slime evaporates before it gets to the burning point, maybe flipping it one time halfway through. If company is coming, I saute red bell peppers in it for show. I usually eat it with white rice, a smoked sausage, or a couple slices of bacon. I planted my own okra for the first time this year. I never got tired of eating it. My dad always planted Okra, I miss him now. Thank you for sharing this.
In the summertime, my mom used to make a soup with okra, tomatoes and onion, seasoned with salt & pepper. She made cornbread to eat with it. Mom was born & raised in Mississippi.
My grandma was 1/2 Cherokee from NC and she would cook okra different from any recipe I’ve seen. She would cut it into disks and same with zucchini into a pot with canned stewed tomatoes. She just simmered it in a pot as a side dish when it was in season.
Cooked this okra like you said to do today- it was delicious threw some tomatoes in there and made okra and tomato dish. First time cooking it for me I'm 72 and trying to learn how to cook some... Folks at church are bringing in fresh vegetables... thanks again John
My grandma, Lillian Clarke, loved okra from *Church's Chicken* . She'd leave it on the stove and eat it through out the day. I was an adult when I gained a definite love for okra.
The south East Asian way is to add mashed garlic, onions, chili and dried shrimps and season with some sugar and salt and if eaten with rice, it will be heavenly!
Oh I air fried mine tonight for the first time and it had a similar effect. They came out delicious. I used to hate okra because my mom used to make it slimy and LOVED it that way. First time I had it roasted/fried I loved it!
A BIG THANK YOU for this recipe, and great explanation on how to cook it. Got some fresh okra yesterday, and saw you. Today I cooked it up, opened a can of baked beans, diced tomatoes, mixed them together, and heated them up. Then last minute before serving up I used the okra on top as like a garnish🤗🤗!
I bought a bunch of okra for a recipe that I didn't feel like making after I bought the okra but I needed to cook it before it went bad. Didn't wanna coat it, flour it, corn meal it, egg it, etc as in all the youtube vids ...then I saw your vid..I just made it your way....washed, cut, seasoned and threw in a pan for about 5 minutes...OMG..just PERFECT....delish, firm to the bite, not too oily, ( I don't like using " slime" when referring to food..lol). Thanks for keeping it simple!!!
Thanks. This was great. The person at our community supported agriculture pickup said she eats it raw. So, I tried that. It was very good. I will try this. Thanks again.
Thank you!!! We JUST did this tonight and you helped us know which to use and how to cook them healthily (we used a dab of olive oil instead) and they were DELICIOUS!!! No more giving away or composting okra we don't know what to do with!!!
I have a very similar recipe. After cutting my okra, I toss it with ~ 1t of olive oil, then toss it with a spice blend of s & p, garlic powder, cumin, Aleppo pepper flakes (or any other hot seasoning of your choice), and finely rubbed dried oregano (ingredients to taste). Then, cook a shown, though maybe at a little lower heat. I also grill whole okra with the same seasoning.
The only way I like okra is pickled. But this sounds so good gonna have to try this recipe. And you know what, if I still don't like it, I think this recipe would be great on veggies I do like. Thanks a million. Jesus bless.
It goes against my upbringing, but I was looking for a recipe that did not involve breading and frying. Can't wait to try. We have an okra crop for the first time in a few years.
Thank you for the video..I’m trying Okra for the first time ..I have a bag of frozen sliced okra(I know it’s not as good as fresh) but I’m trying to find a good way to cook it because I hear about all these “slime” stories with it..I hope this works and thanks again for the advice.
Thank you. I’ve never made okra, but I planted some this year and I have about 15 plants so I’ve got to come up with some no slime recipes pretty quick. My understanding is with so many plants I’m gonna have okra throughout the season with plenty to give away.
I love okra this way and seeing this makes me hungry for some. I've got the seeds started but waiting a couple more weeks to put them out in the garden. Just keep your okra picked at least every other day and you'll have lots to work with. Thank you.!
A good way to cook it is to slice it, then put in the sun for a while to dry or cover it with a cloth and leave overnight to dry out some of the slime. Slice some Irish/ English potatoes 🥔 very thin. Place your oil in the pot with your herbs, salt, ochro and potatoes and fry till it's burn. You will enjoy it.
I love okra, too, slime and all. I even like to boil the whole okra for a few minutes and eat it that way. I'm dehydrating a lot this year. I'll have a video out about that soon. Thanks for visiting
I tried this tonight and so very good! I only had a handful of okra and I meant to save some for my husband and boys...but I may have eaten it all myself. 🤷🏻♀️😄 More will grow. Haha
Very similar to my family recipe except we, cut it up, let it start to sweat and then toss with cornmeal and salt, cook same as you. Ours comes out a little crunchy, my favorite vegetable.
We always roll ours in flour and cornmeal but will try this next time to see how we like it. Thank you for sharing, it looks yummy! Ozark Mountain Goats
Was curious about how it is not slimy...even when I juice it...slime, and cooked just to boil for the slime for hair conditioning...it is really great for that, but yes, love to see this. Thank you!

Sometimes I'll do a three way mix of okra, brussel sprouts, mushrooms, cooked in pan similar to this video. All three cook pretty much in synch, so it's easy and fast. I use regular olive oil for grease.
Interesting, I never have fried okra this way cut up and without breading. I have fried it this way whole, even leaving the stem on it. I have wanted to try grilling them whole as well. But it is so blasted hot this time of year who wants to use a grill outside in the 100 degree heat! Looking forward to using your method. I am sure I will like it since I love okra anyway.
For those who don't like too much slime, try the below. Slice the ochroes thin, then put in the sun for an hour or cover it with a cloth and leave overnight to dry out the excess slime. Slice some Irish/ English potatoes 🥔 very very thin. Place your oil in the pot to heat up, add ochro, potatoes, herbs and salt, then stir and fry till it's burnt. You will enjoy it. I too don't like the slime but this way taste amazing for me. Let me know when you try it.
Get a non-stick pan, using a kitchen towel, just coat the surface with oil. Medium heat and add in thick slices of white onion, and cook until edges are charred. Add in okra (sliced) with turmeric and black salt. Cook until the okra slices are charred. Place on a plate and drizzle with fresh lime juice. Great in a tortilla wrap with some yoghurt.
Two days ago i chopped and stir-fried in a little water a few pods of chopped okra that a friend had given me, plus lots of chopped green onions and beet greens, and added to it instant couscous with a spice mix, plus other spices and minced lemon peel to taste. Even though there was just a little okra compared to the other vegetables, its flavor and sliminess were strong and dominated the taste, which i disliked but still managed to eat about half. Next day i heated up the rest of it thoroughly and then added chopped fresh tomatoes, and was very pleased to notice the strong okra flavor and sliminess were totally gone. That may have been due to the tomatoes, even though they were fresh and not stewed with the okra.
I fry the okra cut an onion small pieces add salt red chilli powder half tea spoon of termeric and 2 tomatos cover with the lid cook for 15 minutes on a very low heat .u can eat with roti or pitta bread.it is so silicious.

I buy okra in pack it's already cut 4.25 what I do is if I cook rice I place okra in top of my rice. The rice cook okra also is cook its on top of my rice. That's how I cook my veggie I pit them.on top of my rice. Broccoli cauliflower......
I ate Okra recently and it was so fucking slimy, honestly, the worst thing I have ever eaten. But I will try again, after burning the shit out of them.

So this is sort of roasting OKRA in skillet ---- oil/grease to be small in quantity. Will try cooking this way next time. This way of cooking is not frying it. Frying with more oil makes OKRA too much oiled up which I do not like.
It’s not fast food - fast food is processed food with lots of harmful additives. This is fresh okra, fried with minimal grease, and is good for you. Of course, frying is not the healthiest way to eat food, but if you want great taste, you gotta fry it sometimes.
That is too long and is woody , I like it as big as my thumb in the food 🤷🏼♀️I go to Middle East store to get it that small in freezer , this way we use the whole and you won’t get any slime at all 😏
