Hi Dom. I considered the CC121 and Softube Console 1, however, I have just bought a NEKTAR Panorama P1 Control Surface and I must say it is a fantastic piece of kit . It works brilliantly with Cubase Pro 10.5. It maps really well and has an easy learning curve. I wasn't expecting this controller to work as well as it does but it really is worth a look and is another one to consider. Great value for money too being considerably cheaper than the CC121 or the Softube. Cheers.

I know the CC121 has the AI knob and can control the stock plugins parameters in cubase, but can you tell me, How much control ,if any, does it give you with 3rd party plugins? i am looking at getting a DAW CONTROLLER and the cc121 is one of 3 on my shortlist (see my previous post !) and have been trying to find this answer for all the choices on my shortlist!!! But because i use cubase pro 10.5, not been able to get the answer at all, for the CC121, the FADERPORT 8 or the BEHRINGER X-TOUCH? The answer to this question will really help me decide which machine to finally choose to buy? Sorry for this rant, but nowhere seems to offer up to date info, not even the manufacturers? I am hoping and praying that as you have has a CC121 a long time, you may know the answer? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! thanks you!

The best and cheapest controllers are: a game mouse with programmable buttons (i use the Razor Naga with 12 programmable buttons on the side), then a gamer key board with programmable buttons (i use a Logitech G510) Then a midi keyboard with sliders and nobs ((i have an Arturia Keylab 88 that also has a pad section, but that is shit, unusable so..) get an Akai 16 drum pad (i have the Akai MPD218 and it only costs 75 euros or something, great for finger drumming) That’s all you need the rest is BS....or is it? All this hardware comes with software! Usable software. Akai and Arturia bring some great VST instruments. For the keyboard and the mouse, well you need one anyway, don’t you, for a few bucks more you get something really useful. A sustain pedal and “volume” pedal that you can program to anything you like. Beyond this, yes there are a lot of possibilities and we’ve only scratched the service (spelled wrong , I know, sorry about that, help me here). Breath controllers, motion controllers that you can put on your body for life performances, midi guitar controllers, new types of midi controllers ( roli Seabooard sounds very interesting but expensive) and not a first goto. First understand your CC (Continuous Controller). every keyboard has pitch and modulation; USE IT!

I looked at many controllers over the years. Back in the 1999, I had one which I believe was made by Digitech. Some stuff worked, some didn't -- it wasn't exactly what one would consider to be "compatible" with Cubase (although you must remember that in those days I was working with Cubase 3.7 VST that a computer builder gave to me, saying "I can't make head or tail out of this.") This was my introduction to many, many versions of Cubase over the years, all the way up to my current one -- Cubase 11 Pro. 22 years later, I am totally sold on Cubase. I wish I could say the same about the controllers.

has to be steinberg houston ive had mine for many many years and use it all the time..its built like a tank,has flying faders,has lots of customisable shortcut buttons,has dedicated knobs for panning,fx sends,eq,it can control vsts..etc its amazing its basically a cc121 but on steroids :) at the time it came out though it failed because of a few factors.. 1)it came out at a time when people wernt fully working with vsts . 2)people couldnt understand why theyd need this over a normal mixer. 3)lots of fake news and reviews ..many of the reviews i read at the time were later found out never to have even owned one..it was also before the internet had kicked off so people could only really rely on magazines or word of mouth. 4)it was way out the price range off many users at the time..it orginally cost way over £1000 but buyers couldnt understand why it cost so much if it didnt have audio inputs so many ignored it. 5)cubase was always liked but at the time magazines and reviewers all prefered pro tools so many studios at the time only used pro tools so major studios never bought this. ... i was very very lucky i bought this many years ago when steinberg was just getting rid of there stock i bought mine from turnkey london for £199 with a copy of neuendo for free.but in all the years ive had it ive had no issues with it and its worked with every version of cubase im currently on cubase 10.5.12 and its still supported and maps automatically within cubase.steinberg dont offically support it so no firmware updates but cubase program itself still does its in the device cubase menu. if any cubase users see one for sale on ebay or in a second hand store buy it you wont be sorry just make sure you check the lcd screen is still ok there is a issue that theres bubbles in the plastic screen cover thats ok .it doesnt affect the screen o viewing mine has one or two small bubbles but in some older ones people have had bad ones and tried fixing it themselfs which have damaged some screens so double check the screens are still ok. also if you have one it has a self check calibration mode which is useful and i do mine every 6 months. heres how you do it. turn of your houston press and hold down the send masters andeq1 button power up the houston on the screen you will see calibration mode now on then youll see all the faders calibrate. when its doing this just leave the room let it do its thing ,reason why i say leave is the faders are very very sensitive so if you accidentlly touch them or blow on them etc it will not set them up as accurate as the can be so just go make a cup of tea.

Nice controllers! For those on a budget, I can offer up these cheaper alternatives that I have and find useful: -Steinberg CMC series They don't actually make these anymore, but you can find used ones eBay or elsewhere. I'll state right out that I went all-in on these years ago and have every model they made, and don't use most on them. Their touch-faders look way cool but are kinda useless in practice. The ones I still use regularly are the CMC-AI (mainly for the AI knob controller that does the same mouse-over control that the CC121 does in this video), and the CMC-TP for transport control. I also use the CMC-PD to lay down quick beats, but there are other solutions out there for that;. my CMC-PD happens to still be set up in my CMC rack so it's handy. -Presonus Faderport This gives me the motorized single fader that follows whatever track you're currently on. Its transport controls are ok as well...not as tightly integrated to Cubase as the CMC-TP, but y Presonus is on the opposite side of my desk as my CMC-TP, so I have transport control capabilities wherever I happen to be facing. -Streamdeck Cheaper alternative to the Loupedeck...no variable controllers, just buttons you can assign images and keystroke macros to. I could easily live without this, but it is handy now and then. I suppose if you have a bunch of custom macros you use often and would be happier with a dedicated controller for them rather than using the keyboard it might be more useful. Just tossing it out there for what its worth in case you can pick these up cheap.

Great video Dom. I've used many controllers too. Mackie MCU are junk, used several of them and they die after continuous use (backlights and faders). Just switched to the SSL Nucleus2 for console-like control. I still require two hands worth of faders during mixing! Console 1 is on the list as a nice plugin interface (use a lot of UA plugins here). Also have the StreamDeck, which is a great little macro button controller for both Cubase and Wavelab and relatively inexpensive. A bit like the Loupedeck, but smaller and also fully customisable with LCD buttons and pages.
@G_handle
@G_handle 4 года назад
Geoff Swan Console 1 and Nucleus2 are made for each other. If you came up on SSL desks, that combo brings you home. The 4000E comes with it and beats all the others sonically. But I’m a 9000 guy, extended top and bottom, and the 9000K was the ONLY way to go......until a few weeks ago with Brainworks 9000J. Haven’t yet compared, but Michael Brauer helped them develop it, and has me convinced that it is The One! That said, unless it’s night and day, which it won’t be, nothing beats the hands on control of Console 1.

Another great vid to help me decide my move from Studio One. I asked in your Mixer vid, but this is more relevant here... 1. Does the CC121 keep you off the mouse and keyboard for the most part? Does the pan work with the panning & width of the combined panner? 2. I'm also considering a Console 1 and Console 1 Fader combo. I know you don't have the Fader, but what would you miss if you only had the C1 and not the CC121? 3. I have a lot of 3rd party, non Softube plugins, like the PA SSL plugin you used the CC121 on. Have you mapped any 3rd party plugins to the CC121 or C1? If so, is it a similar experience to controlling Cubase or Softube plugins? Thanks!

i love my CC121......i only wish there was a way to operate the low and high cut pre filter buttons and it would be awesome if the function knob acted as an Alt button for the four function knobs which would allow us to have eight functions assigned instead of just four..... i use it for 1 and 2: set snap value up or down, 3: activate and deactivate cycle follows range markers and 4: open/close right zone and the function knob controls my main mix volume... i'd be interested to know more about how the banks option in the 121 work because i haven't got a clue

I have mentioned it in the comments of your A/B video (which you link to in this one) for reference tracks. Hi. I have a brand new Arturia Keylab 88 Mk 2. I bought it because of all in one functions (good keys, pads, faders and knobs). But I discovered a lot of problems when I connected it in Cubase 11. I have a Faderport 16 also for mixing. It is connected with Mackie Control in Cubase and faders and transport buttons (play, stop, forward and so on) are working good. I need the Arturia’s faders and knobs just as a VST instruments CC controllers. I use a Spitfire instruments and always need CC 1, CC 11, CC 21 and more… I connected my Arturia in Cubase same way as a Faderport 16 (Mackie Control) and use a DAW mode. When I push a Arturia transport buttons (play, stop, forward) and move faders up and down, Faderport 16 faders are mowing same time and buttons are on. I tried to setup Arturia in Cubase in Generic Mode, then Track Quick Controls and VST Quick Controls mode, but no results. In Arturia MIDI Control center I have changed faders and knobs address (CC function) but in Cubase it works just in User Mode without transport buttons, track controls and global controls. My question is: How can I activate Arturia faders and knobs as a CC controllers, and transport buttons (play, stop, forward and so on) in DAW mode (no user mode), and same time use a faderport 16 faders as a mixer? I don’t need Faderport transport buttons. I need just Arturia transport buttons. Thank you

The best controller for Cubase 12 - after the production of the Steinberg CC121 has ceased - for me is the PreSonus FaderPort V2 (one fader) together with the new version (08.08.2023) of the midi remote script written by Werner Mairegger with the extensions written by Christian Oestmann. Been looking at various ones to try and decide which to go for? how bout Nektar Panorama? Surely it is better to have 16 faders, screen, and deep integration than one? All macros, all complex commands can be mapped to one button, plugins are auto mapped, encoders work as beasts, you can re-route what you want...and there is an automated recall fader, pretty much like one from Steinberg. I am mentioning DAW control, MIDI, but also transport, selection, audio, cutting, scrubbing, warping, literally what you want, plus it is on your keyboard, which then is mapped to all possible software and hardware you have. For me that is the best all around controller - asking for full weight keys would be too much. As composer and producer of very large content, Panorama goes as my main controller, together with Doepfer.

I think Loupedeck has the same concept of Elgato StreamDeck where you link macros to the touch screen assignable buttons. But the latter is more easy to learn and of course cheaper.

The same controller since 2008 (Cubase 4), Tascam FW-1082 which is also a FireWire audio/MIDI interface... 14 Years! Of course it is out of market... I wish I could have an SSL Nucleus 2 and I don't understand why SSL stop producing it...

Yes, a video on the Loupedeck would be great. Does the software for it allow you to control the speed/acceleration of a knob that is mapped to any zoom setting?

Thank you so much for your video!! Very informative and well done! I'm still trying to setup for quality live music streaming. Do you do live sessions? And what's your setup/flow for being able to do so (playing for your audience, talking to them, ability to listen to yourself play via headphones or monitors without doubling up, etc) thank you!

Aaaah yes!!!! I love Komplete Kontrol although I tend to use it more for controlling softsynths and NI stuff :) but it’s a decent controller for sure and works great with Cubase!
