My First Impressions of Hognose Snakes! (What I learned after two months...)

I've had my plains hognose snake for just over two months, and I've learned a lot about them, that no one tells you! In this video, I'll be sharing my first impressions of plains hognose snakes, what I do (and don't) love about them, and generally speaking about these fascinating snakes!
All-in-all, plains (formerly known as western) hognoses make wonderful pet snakes! That said, are they good beginner snakes? Are they easily handleable? Are they venomous?! I'll answer all of those questions in this video.

I don't have a whole lot of experience, but of the snakes I have kept so far, I love the chilled personalities and varied looks of my royal pythons. I love the idea of a retic, but I doubt I could house a standard sized one. Little Eko across on Green Room Pythons looks manageable though, so perhaps one day I might get a super dwarf retic like her?

As a preschool teacher I've held a garter snake and a corn or milk snake (I can't remember which) on field trips to nature centers thru the years. I wish I lived close to snake discovery so I could field trip to their zoo!!

I used to be afraid of snakes as a kid and that changed after holding a pet albino corn snake in middle school; then I discovered Snake Discovery back in 2017-18 with hog hatching videos and have been hooked ever since. Have 2 hogs and a MBK now they and Dav got me wanting a bullsnake in the future.

I really want a hognose snake, a lot of people don't recommend hognoses for beginners but it's the only snake I want. Really difficult to come to a conclusion.

As a snake owner, I can say that it’s not a matter of your first snake being a beginner species. Rather for your first one, I recommend going for the species YOU want. It will be easier to do the research and get invested with your dream reptile, than it would be if you had gone with a species you aren’t interested in. I like all my snakes, but my hognose has been a more consistent eater for me than either of my ball pythons. And food strikes tend to stress new owners even more. So just get the hognose you want when the time is right. It will be a far more enjoyable experience for you in hindsight.
@bobbiec2829

I'm in the same boat and agree with Diamond. As long as you do the research and are committed you'll get over any hurdles that come your way. I'm hoping to get a hognose at the NARBC in Schaumburg next March 😁

I'm in the same boat, I just bought a hognose snake a few weeks ago. A year old but only 12 grams. The breeder had a small group of hog babies that had a hard time eating and did the brumation method and then switched to reptilink sausage , to scented pinky then to an unscented pinky. I have had my hog eat 3 meals with me of an unscented pinky , so I'm happy about that. But I would agree not a first time snake owner ideal breed, with hognose being fussy and also rear fang venomous. I would recommend a corn snake over a hognose. Then down the road get a hognose , since they have similar care. This was my fourth snake , so I was ready for it.

I held some kind of non-venomous snake when I was on Hollywood Blvd a few years ago. I always thought snakes were cool before then, but after that happened I was even more intrigued. I'm about to graduate and go into my first year in college, and they allow snakes. I think a Hognose would be perfect to try and take care of in my situation. :))

Hunter, I had 3 hatchling hognoses from 2021 that did not feed after hatching no matter what I did. I finally cooled them over Winter at about 50-60 deg F until March 2022. They all fed on thawed washed pink mice after that, but only when kept in deli cups and not disturbed with the pink mouse in with them. Now, they are feeding like crazy. Small enclosures (I used 6 inch diameter deli cups) work best for babies. Can go larger once they are consistently feeding. Hognose are actually very eager feeders once going. They prefer to eat during the early part of the day - that is when they forage. So that is another trick to help get babies going. Although established captives may get used to feeding at any time during the day. Good luck with yours.

I fell in love with hognoses at first sight. After decades of wanting a snake, but never having one of my own, I was able to handle one at my first reptile show and am in the process of adopting him! I just think all of the pros outweigh the con of picky eating- I love their adult size and their slower movement during handling, I've handled rosy boas, cornsnakes, and ball pythons many times, but plains hognoses just stole my heart!

my first experiences with plains hognoses were with one at a museum I worked at. She was a sassy one once she grew up, and she very distinctly had favorite and least favorite people. Super great eater too. My own little one who is maybe 15 months was also a slow starter to eat but now she eats great and is putting on a lot more weight and length! Very funny and pleasing snakes and I love how thick/tubular the females get (just careful not to overfeed lol cuz some of them are highly food motivated)

The aligator was amazing to touch soft leathery skin with hard dermal plates on their backs. The one I help was between 1-2 feet long including its tail.

Super interesting study on the hognose snakes. I grew up in the Texas swamp and bayou area. So we would commonly see hognose snakes and they were known by a common name in that area as Spreading Adders. Hahah but the way people pronounced it I really did not clock that name until I was in Uni studying wildlife biology. It sounded like Spnadders in South East Tx accent and Cajun mixed in. We were not allowed to hold them growing up because some people are allergic to their rear fang venom. They are cute and were so happy snuffling around the loose clay soil eating eggs and toads

Also I have to say you 're right. But if you buy one from a very good breeder. So the snake has a couple off meals in him/her then I would say yes, they're good for a beginner. But you have to be sure they eat allready unscented pinkies. How was her shedding? Was it a full shed?

I've held more garter snakes than I can count...a rubber boa...a bullsnake... And two hognose's. One I currently own who has eaten two pinky mice for me in the 2.5 weeks I have had him. And I am still worried about him eating enough...he is currently in need of a meal. I've offfered him two tuna scented mice this week and he didn't eat either one. Sigh...I guess I'll try again in a few days or a week idk...

I've loved snakes my whole life. Ever since the first garter snake I caught when I was like 5 or 6 I grew up in the country spending the warm seasons catching every frog, snake, turtle, bug, etc. that I could find. I got my 1st pet reptile about 8 yrs ago. A leopard gecko. But since then snakes have been my true love. I have 9 (soon to be 10) snakes of 6 different species. Cornsnakes, ball pythons, bullsnakes, a California kingsnake, a boa constrictor, and a little DeKay's brownsnake that somehow found its way into my ground floor apartment. I have a wish list a mile long of other species I'd love to work with. But I'd have to win the lotto to keep all the snakes I want. So I'll just stick to what I have and see where life takes me.

When they do play dead is it hard on their bodies to recover? Is it dangerous health wise for them to do it a lot?
@samanthasherry8016
@samanthasherry8016 3 года назад
Yes it is detrimental to a hognose to play dead because that is their very last defense mechanism, meaning that the snake has officially given up hope on scaring away the predator and thinks it is going to die by the threat.
@HunterHouck
@HunterHouck 3 года назад
Health-wise, it is not! I haven’t seen any research that it is. They do it when they’re spooked, not when they think they’re going to die. It’s more common with baby hognoses, especially Easterns (not as common with Plains).

Yeah I held my hognose snake many years ago but I had to relocate him because my gf was afraid off snakes. Stupidest decision in my life. But he's with a good friend off mine. Now I have since last year (August 24 2020) an aberrant Cal King male that's born June 29 2020. And he means everything to me. I holded jungle carpet python. BCC, BCI... And my friend her false water cobra. Also every kind off kingsnake almost and a very spastic mangrove snake that was never been handled and my friend has him as a rescue. The first time he tagged me 3 times. And now if I go there it's MUCH better. Then also the obvious snakes like cornsnakes, garter snakes, ball pythons and so on. Also a woma python, and on the top off my list a black head python. I'm on a list for one. But it can take to 2 years because I want one from this specific breeder and it has to be a baby male. (Why a male, because female can lay eggs/ slugs even when they never saw a male). And I'm a hobbyist. Not a breeder. Long story short my Cal king has a big terra. If I let made another custom Terra with Terra closet and all for a black head python1 sleeping room will be almost full allready. And if I move out to an apartment 2 snakes with huge enclosures is all I can get. But I love them so much! Ow yeah I touched hots well yeah handled them with tools but am not allowed to speak about it over People who keep them in Belgium, because in my county its illegal and in the country next to mine, so in the Netherlands you don't even need a permit. But I have friends there and handle there venomous snakes too. No mambas or so for me but definitely rattlesnakes and cobras. 1 time an 8 feet king brown. That was afther all my practice and lessons I got over the years from a pro there. But he was relatively calm.. Lucky for me. Also snakes in general come on the first place for me. If I ever have a gf again that doesn't like snakes I will say sorry gf I relocate you, and not my snake!!! I'm 31 by the way, 32 this December the 12th.
