The first time my hognose nuzzled into me, I actually freaked out a bit. I hadn't really touched or felt his nose before then, so I had no clue that western hognoses' hog noses are super hard and feel kind of like a combination of a fingernail and a callus. Once they do it to you a few times and you build up some trust, it becomes plain adorable.
My little hognose, Nope, just came today and I'm already in love. The name Nope is because that's what the entire family said when I started introducing them to snakes about a year ago. Clint, Emily&Ed of Snake Discovery and Adam Wickens of WWR helped my husband and kids conquer their fear of reptiles in general, but especially snakes. We've slowly worked our way up from cresties to beardies to hoggies😆 and they're so much easier, more rewarding and less dangerous than "common" pets like cats and dogs.
Okay this is now my most favorite channel this guy is so happy and entertaining and also I have wanted a hognose for so long and this is actually so informative
This video really made me more interested in hognoses. I've always thought they were cute, but typically the ones I've seen videos of have been very small and hated being handled. Seeing an older and larger one that isn't consistently trying to strike really makes me want one a lot more. She looks pretty chill.
Oh my gosh...THANK YOU!!!! Not 10 minutes ago I was handling my dream come true..my first stake! A beautiful Male western hognose I just got about a week ago! Hes become the apple of my eye. Getting used to handing him..finally getting over that initial shock of his hisses and boops..and as he nestled in my arm I definitely felt the wiggly nose digging where it touched my body and had the thought he might be trying to chew. I'm so glad you covered that. Now I know hims just burrowing! I just love my time with him. Hogs have my heart for sure. Snakes with personality!
I'm seriously considering getting a hognose so I've been looking through RU-vid videos and this is so incredibly adorable, sent this to my parents to hopefully get them on board😆😅
Alternate title : Clint geeking out over how cute hognose snakes are. The burrow into your hand thing scared me the first time I held my hognose. I thought he was gonna bite. Then I realized what he was doing. It made me jump a little but I didn't drop him fortunately.
"They have chew on you for a minute" .. my 25 gram baby boy got to bit me with teeth in less than 5 secs when I was putting him aside for enclosure cleaning 🤔 .. It itched for about 20 minutes and kinda lost sense/feeling in a finger or those 20 minutes but there wasn't swelling so ima good and I know that I am not alergic to their venom what is good since I am gettin 3 more babies this week 🤣
I've fallen so much in love with hognoses (not just because og your videos, but they have played a part). I've always found snakes fascinating, but preferred lizards, but these ones just appeal to me so much more?? Also props to you for actually featuring an adult hognose - most other videos showcase very young ones in their grumpy teenage years. Darkside is a lovely lady. I very much hope I can get my first snake, and one with a tiny little shovelnose, soon. Better start watching your 'how to convince parents'-video on repeat ;) Until then, I assume there is a video coming on hognose specifically since they were featured in the '5 great pet snakes' video(?). I'm looking very much forward to that and any other videos from you. You are truly one of the best reptile channels out there :D
I've only seen one in the Houston Area, but I used to handle them all the time in west Texas. I have been envenomated by one that bit my thumb. That's when I found out they did indeed have fangs. I had a stinging and burning thumb that swelled a little for a couple of days, and then was fine. I have seen them play dead which is fun to watch.
Clint's Reptiles it's my old Hognose My current lot are not so keen on the camera and won't stay still when out. I agree on the feeling the hard nose and thinking it's them biting or starting to chew on you
Question here about Hognose feeding. I have seen many videos on these wonderful snakes but have never actually seen anyone feed them toads. Is this more of an issue with sourcing feeder toads? Or is there another reason? Love your videos! New subscriber here and happily making my way through all of them.
i have a male ball python right now and he is an absolute pleasure- i'm been looking into what i should get for my second snake, and i really want a female western hognose. they're so precious
Still in the acclimation period with my first Hognose. I got him last Wednesday. How long til he won’t be nervous with me? When can I start desensitizing to handling?
I really would like a western hog nose, I have a bearded dragon (he’s 3, I’ve had him for 3 years), I know snakes and lizards are different, but would you say their easier or harder than a Beardie? Thnx 💖
Seeing as you've done a collab with them, do you think Snake Discovery is a good breeder to get snakes from? Or is there anyone else you'd recommend? I'm still deciding on whether to get a hognose or a garter, and it would be my first snake.
I've always loved snakes but I have only had one which was a mexican kingsnake who I named scott and he went missing after like a month and was never found rip
Brennen Canfield its possible but i know they are much more difficult to keep. They tend to be very picky about their food and may never take an unscented rodent they are also known to be a good bit more tempermental
Almost accidently stepped on an eastern hognose once. That snake looked huge. Too bad it's hard to keep an eastern, that impressive size is impressive.
Ironically my hognose snakes name is halo, but she bites alot (also she bit me and my hole hand swell up pretty bad ) does anyone know how to make your snake less... bitey..?
I just learned something about hognose snakes that's not usually mentioned...they kinda stink. I don't really think it's a bad smell though. Just different.
My hoggy has the exact same colouring! If you havent managed to handle your hoggy for a while will you be able to start handling them again when they get grumpy? I feel like a bad hoggy mum please help
not really I just did a lot of research and I feel they are the ones I could care for the best for I wouldnt want to hurt them because im not capable of caring properly
But you watched it, right?!? Now you may go... wait, watch all of our other videos first. Watch them two times. Make a playlist of them so they can run while you're gone. Then go!
Yeah, I call my hognose my Grumpy Snake. Sometimes he hisses at me, sometimes he hisses at his food and then refuses to eat it :p Btw, what kind of morph is your Darkside? She's a beaut.
I have a young hognose who burrows a lot and if I try to handle him he gets very moody and strikes even though I've handled him a fair amount of times I'm not sure what to do with him :(
Their coloration is very reminiscent of a rattlesnake. Probably not a coincidence. But that head gives them away as just being silly little shovel-noodles :)
Hi can u do a video regarding their bite and how/most effective way to get them to release asap? I had a baby one now, she is the most chill baby with no attitude! Never hiss never strike at all since I got her, she even came out to linger around her cage when I'm around. Till one day, I'm not sure if my hand smell of food but I did wash, she decided to take a bite and cling on and I admit I do have a phobia of her mouth getting near me now! 😭😭😭 I pinch her head to get her off of me asap as I'm afraid of the venom! I'm just shock because she show no symptoms and the next moment she is clinging onto my finger! Please do a video regarding hognose and why do they bite??? Thanks!!!!
They should only bite if hungry as they have tons of defense mechanisms that don't include biting. As for the venom, their fangs are at the back of their throats and the venom acts like a bee's where it is only dangerous if you're allergic to it, otherwise the worst that will happen is swelling.
Haylan192837465 I took her out a few days ago, and she did open her mouth at my hands, I quickly move her away, no rats or mouse nearby or out, i wash my hand prior too.. don't know what is wrong 😭
I let her hand around my finger and then I use my hand to touch her nose, then she proceed to open her mouth Wide at me! It is not feeding day yet and I also wash my hand with soap prior to handling too
Laughing so hard right now. One of my hogs loves foot SO much that she even mistakes chicken-kebab for food. Yab, she bit me because my fingers smelled like grilled garlic-chicken.. XD
I was anticipating more information about how to handle a hognose snake as the title says, somewhat disappointed there’s not more “how to” please redo or add-on!
