Hi Julia! New subscriber here. I have always wanted to learn how to make pictorial quilts. "Drawing with Fabric" is how I've described pictorial quilts. Thanks for making this process feel more within the realm of possibility for me. Please, please continue to make more videos of how to make pictorial quilts.

You should try heat away stabilizer! No wetting, just iron it off. Sew Easy! Love this quilt and your process.
@stitchesbyjulia
@stitchesbyjulia 4 года назад
Thank you so much for the tip! I just looked it up and I think it will work. It looks very similar to Solvy except it disappears with heat. I have tried a stabilizer that is heat away, brush away. It was a nightmare. I couldn't get the little bits away from the stitches. I will give your recommendation a try. Thanks so much for sharing. Julia

Landscape quilts is one of my most favorite things to do. I have a collection of landscape fabric that most would kill for. I have quite a few of them hanging in my house. I'll be teaching landscape quilted post cards in Mar/April at my local community clubhouse and really look forward to teaching again. I like the idea of using the disposable pan as a spray box. Love your desert scene and the extra shadow work and ground texture. It gives a much more natural look.

@stitchesbyjulia
@stitchesbyjulia 4 года назад
Hi Phyllis, This was so much fun to do and I am so excited that you love it too. Can I pick your brain? Do you add your pieces directly on the batting or do you use a foundation piece. I tend to make things up as I go along and I'm not sure if there's a better way. I'm with Dorothy- I would love to take your class:) Julia
@Phyllis-nk5ji
@Phyllis-nk5ji 4 года назад
stitchesbyjulia Hi Julia, I usually use a foundation piece with a fusible webbing on the back side of the major pieces. Then add machine embroidery, hand stitching, ephemera and other things to add to the piece. There really is no right or wrong way to fuse...spray adhesive, glue stick...whatever gives you the effect you want. I use fusible webbing to eliminate fraying when I want clean edges. After all the major pieces are ironed in place, I add the batting to the backside of the foundation piece and then the back piece goes behind the batting and I'll machine stitch down the major horizon lines. I try to match the bobbin color or use monofilament on the whole piece to the back of the quilt fabric. Adding the sleeve and binding is another whole story. You did a great job! One tip I can pass along is that the horizon line is always straight. (example: an ocean view) the foundation, batting and backing should be all the same size if you plan on adding a border. I'll send you a couple of pictures of my work if you wish as well as some wonderful landscape quilters. There are some fun patterns for sale that contain everything that the beginner might want to start with. I feel like working on a landscape. So much fun !

Hi Julia what a wonderful quilt and thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your pattern, the landscape and finished quilt looks stunning. I have an oil painting in our lounge at home of an oil painting of Mount Teton which my late husband bought when he was on a climbing trip many years ago. After watching your fabulous tutorial I thought I might have a go at recreating the painting in a much simpler way and hanging it next to the painting (if it turns out ok😀 as I am not at all creatively gifted). I have never used invisible thread and was really impressed on how good it looks. Julia I am currently using your denim bag tutorials to make small bags from denim jeans - Elizabeth and Catherine are going to man a stall later in the year to raise money for their school - they will be helping to sew these when they come to stay - they love using my very ancient Sizzix machine😀. As always Julia a fantastic vlog, you really cheer me up and inspire me, thank you. Send you and your family lots of love as always xxxxxxxx Dorothy ❤️🙋🏻😘🌟

Hi Dorothy, Recreating the oil painting into a art quilt would is such a great idea! I found that this little one was easy. Fabric is so forgiving. If you don't like something, add something on to it:) I think it is wonderful that you have your granddaughters involved in sewing. They are lucky to have you! Also working in a booth raising money for their school is such great experience. Wish them well. Have a great week. Julia

Hi Jan, I usually do not pre-wash unless it is something that will be washed a lot. I use to embellish sweatshirts for craft shows, I would prewash the sweatshirt and all the fabric going into them. On some of the art quilts, I do not wash until afterwards because I like the look of the texture once it is washed. Hope this makes sense. Happy sewing, Julia
