The charge rate is because of the design of Ultium. Each module in an ultium battery pack is 8S, each module is combined in series with each other. GM chose very large pouch cells, which limits how many batteries they can combine in series. At 3.7V nominal per cell and 8S, that's 29.6V per module, this is a 10 module car so that's 296V nominal, 336V max. CCS charges at up to 500A, so 296V * 500A is 148kw, or roughly 150kw. Hopefully later when the vehicle comes native with NACS it can accept the higher amperage of NACS and charge at a faster rate.
@Nomancer
@Nomancer 10 дней назад
Volvo EX90 claims to charge over 600 amps at ~400 volts via CCS chargers that can support it. It's sometimes OK to go Out Of Spec as long as temperature is monitored and safe.
@chrisss73841
@chrisss73841 10 дней назад
I doubt it. I thought Ultium is pouch cell by design? Which means the real limitation is cooling the pouches during DC charging.
@bahamatodd
@bahamatodd 10 дней назад
@@chrisss73841No he's correct. Ultium cells and modules were optimized so the larger truck battery packs can do 350kW. So in turn the smaller the battery, the lower the charging performance.

"Hopefully later when the vehicle comes native with NACS it can accept the higher amperage of NACS and charge at a faster rate." NACS doesn't specify a current limit, only a maximum connector interface temperature of 105C, so I really hope GM pushes fast charging more with NACS. 296V nominal for an EV battery pack in 2024 is wild.

As an EV6 owner I feel like these Ultium EVs are really not as competitive as I was expecting. My 2022 purchased-as-used EV still SMOKES these for fast charging despite them being brand new and notably more expensive. Hoping Ultium can make some jumps in performance in the future, as a former Bolt owner I want to see GM EVs be successful!
@ayushmalpeddi2793
@ayushmalpeddi2793 8 дней назад
True but I'd imagine these ultium cars will cost a lot less OTD. I know plenty of people with Teslas who never ever road trim. So the advantage of Hyundai/KIAs fast charging is not always that useful. Especially if you can't get the max charge rate from a supercharger

The Smart buttons are on a small dock at the bottom of the screen and it can display anything from 1 to 3 buttons at a time, it's usually based on Geo fenced locations. Will display your Garage door openers when near your home or display your alarm or glove box button when parked. So on for the most frequently used buttons too. It's not that bad. @@theredmonkey in comparison to other cars yeah its slower. But ur right I get tunneled vision with my MY 4.5s which I don't step on it often because that is dangerous. At some point (5s) the 0-60 time becomes irrelevant and range emerges. For a non towing CAR, a solid 250-300mi is the sweet spot. Often times mfg advertise 300mi, but if u want your battery to last, u get 250, and if ur carrying 4 adult size occupants u would get even less.

@Slider68
@Slider68 10 дней назад
I don't know how typical we are, but my wife and I plan to purchase our first true EV (we currently have a plug in C-Max and a hybrid Highlander). For us having a 300+ mile range and an efficient heater (heat pump?) is far, far more important than having fast charging at roadside charging stations. We live in Canada and our winters can get down to as cold as -40°C and -40°F, so efficiency in the cold is important. We expect to do essentially all charging overnight at home. For road trips we expect to leave the EV at home and drive our Highlander, or our Lexus GX470.
@camarilloconcerns8782
@camarilloconcerns8782 10 дней назад
You are very typical. Only 1/2 of 1% of trips in the U.S. are over 100 miles and only 1/10 of 1% are over 500 miles. Also people that charge at get the first charge without fast charging. Most everyone still has access to a gas car, plus a lot of people fly when a trip is over 500 miles.
@Slider68
@Slider68 10 дней назад
@ArbitraryFilmings, While some years there are 2 or 3 trips, typically we see less than 1 road trip per year where we travel more than 250 miles in a day. Why would we focus the requirements for our next vehicle to handle something we do in roughly 0.3% of our trips? My wife average about 70 miles of driving per day. For that, a small, luxurious, efficient EV that we charge at home overnight for $0.083/kWh CAD ($0.061/kWh USD) will do well. We'd also like to be able to handle at least 1 day worth of a power failure at home and still be able to make it to work the next day, so we estimate that also would work well with a 300+ mile EV (80% of 300 = 240 miles - 2×70×1.4 = 40 miles of buffer; the 1.4 is for cold winter driving and the 80% is our expected daily charge). On weekends we often go to the cottage, which is about 100 miles away and we can't reliably charge an EV there, but with 300 miles of range and and the ability to do some, minimal charging there, we should be able to take the EV when we don't have much to bring. We also travel about 200 miles once every two months, so again, a 300+ mile EV should be able to handle it when our loads are small. We've thought through our requirements in detail, and for us, a small, luxurious, efficient, 300+ mile EV that we charge overnight is what we've decided we want. We believe this is the most cost-effective option for us to comfortably handle our transportation needs. Neither of us wants to stop and wait for our car to fill up with energy while on our longer trips. Most of the time, on trips that are over 300 miles, we need a bigger vehicle too. Even now, every few years, we end up renting a van to fit everything in. We don't have a problem driving a "gas guzzling ICE vehicle" 600 to 800 miles out of every 30,000 miles that we travel annually. Keep in mind too that ICE vehicles are actually reasonably efficient on the highway. Not EV efficient, but much better than how ~95% of the population drives their ICEV to/from work in stop and go traffic every day.

Kyle, please make a video about pros and cons of owning a EV, is better to buy or lease an EV. Nobody in RU-vid talks in detail about this. This will be nice coming from you since you have the knowledge. For example, what would you recommend for people that own a tesla, is it worth to keep the car for 3 years and then sell it or trade it, or what would recommend depending on the brand of the type of EV.

@mowensmd
@mowensmd 9 дней назад
Problem is this is changing all the time. Top EV like Tesla had very little depreciation as supply chains were hit by the pandemic. All cost of goods went up, prices went up...terrible time to buy and folks who did had a big deprec hit they could have avoided. Now is actually a great time to buy due to the incentives being more clear, costs down and reliability way up for more mature models. Leases are highly variable, depend on the dealerships and are only occasionally better if the vehicle doesn't qualify for incentives but the dealership will pass thru. As the tech is evolving fast too, the decision to sell at 3 years depends on what you bought at the time. I'd be wary of most of the legacy EVs for a few reasons to include lack of dealership support, waiting on NACS, obsolete battery tech (Ultium), the flood of Chinese vehicles in many regions and terrible software/charging networks. Go with the top sellers, read up on safety (Tesla is tops far and away).

Out of Spec always seems to be overly focused on charge speed. 90+ percent of charging is done at home. If you use fast charging occasionally, then charging faster than 150kW is sufficient. Sure…faster is nicer if you don’t like waiting, but for most users, they simply don’t care or don’t need anything faster.

Different people are going to want different stuff. The U.S. Department of Transportation says only 1/2 of 1% of car trips are over 100 miles. Only 1/10 of 1% of car trips are over 500 miles. Plus many people fly for trips over 500 miles. Out of Spec needlessly seems to take straw man swipes at people that they assume don’t agree with them - in this video, owners of Leafs and Bolts that must like slow charging.

@@camarilloconcerns8782I suspect that even more people who have the $ to buy a Cadillac are going to have a home charger. Suspension is the achilles heal of the Model Y, but the problem is also exaggerated due to perception. Much of the problem is the low frequency sounds that bounce around and transmit from the hatch area to the passenger compartment. There's some relatively easy diy fixes that make it about 50% better. I wouldn't trade my 2023 mylr with comfort suspension and the acceleration boost for just about anything.I like my anonymity so even the many others on the road don't bother me.

Unlike my Bolt which others seem to look down upon. Shallow perhaps but it is great to have others admire you without those whale tail Tesla looks.

3 more year's or LESS and that should happen, it's gonna take semi solid state cells and solid state cells though. Semi solid state cells are just now entering production over in china. Solid state cells should start next year and both should be ramping up throughout 2026-2028. The semi solid state cells are 30-40% better in energy density at the pack level and can allow up to 500kw charging. Sakuu says their solid state no metal 3d printed cells are over 35% more energy dense and up to 7% cheaper at the cell level per kwh than the tesla 4680 cell is. Per the latest munro live video released earlier today!

Recently had a rare DCFC charging stop in my model 3 that maxed out at 150kw because that’s what the station was rated for, and it was honestly annoyingly fast. Not enough time to go get lunch while we waited, so had to just sit and wait with the car for for 20 minutes. Nothing wrong with 150kw.

During the Technology Follow-up you talk about how they have OTA capability in the car but they specifically stated they didn't want to use it 30:00. How is it that GM can have this very strong stance against Android Auto/Carplay and that's 9:00 'okay' from you Kyle when they won't even be updating this software? It costs $15 a month to be able to use the in-car system, and that does not include any extra for accessing the car remotely with your phone (locking/unlocking) (Extra $10/month), super cruise (Extra $25/month after the 3 year trial), among many other costs. While I would agree that having a system that's integrated into the car can lead to a better experience, it would be great to hear your response to these questions Kyle. This is something that is very important for the people buying GM EVs that are enthusiasts to at least know. The amount of subscription non-sense from GM is too much for me to ever want to purchase one of their EVs at this point.
@2thdocdds
@2thdocdds 9 дней назад
No GM vehicle has gotten an OTA update since July 2023…because they were killing the 12v batteries of ICE Colorados when the update took longer than it should. They haven’t resumed because they have no confidence that their software updates aren’t going to brick their other cars so if you want module updates it takes hours/days over the slow OBD connection during a multi day service visit instead of minutes/hours via their OTA system they aren’t utilizing.

At the end when comparing the Optic to the model Y shouldn't and going over costs that you get Supercruise for free (for the first 3 years) where you have to pay extra to get some of the same functionality on the Y? Plus if you want any other color then Black on the Y you're paying $1K to $2K extra, where you can get some other colors on the Optiq for no charge. Or you get a level 1/2 travel charger including where it's extra on the Y. Just saying if you want to point out cost differences try to make what you're getting equal. And as a Lyriq owner I hope to god that Cadillac is really saying they won't do any OTA updates since the Lyriq software is still very buggy and is getting updates though only at the dealer at this time, with a rumor of restarting OTA updates fairly soon (after stopping them due to the 12V batter killing update they rolled out).

Blows away a Tesla model Y in my opinion. Yes, it could charge faster and it could have more power although I really don’t have any need for it. Definitely on my shortlist for my next car purchase. I think it’s quite a compelling value for the price. From what I gather super cruise works extremely well on Expressway driving and I would really enjoy that. Especially since you don’t have to keep your hands on it. I currently have a Hyundai and the highway Driving assist is somewhat lacking, although far better than Toyotas utterly worthless system.

Another good video. I wish GM would put out a performance coupe EV similar to the ELR. However, I really need to see GM have better quality over time before I even think about one of these. I have 31,000 miles on my Ford Mach-e and love it. This Cadillac makes up for the early '70s Fleetwood model, but seems too small. I miss my Avalanche. I would like the cooled seats. I hope the software works. I rented a Model 3 for two weeks while my Mach-e was getting paint and REALLY missed CarPlay.

Well 85% of new car buyers in 2023 here in America were homeowners with six figure household incomes and financed the majority of the principle amount for their vehicle purchase of choice. Don't need to worry about apt or condo dwellers for a few more years at least!

Optiq does look sharp , loving that red/orange as well. I wonder of GM is trying to limit warranty claims via slower DCFC ? Kyle ,Jordon can you guys get together with Francie and podcast whats going on with Rivian fires, more amazon vans burning down(a quick google if youdidnmt hear of thelatest) . I keep thinking about you and Alyssas trip and the poor thermal management you were ahving a couple weeks ago.
