My First NH Class 6: Wardrobe Road

It's time to explore what New Hampshire has for legal, publicly accessible wheeling! A Class 6 road in New Hampshire is similar to a Class 4 road in Vermont: A town highway that's been discontinued and currently exists in an unmaintained (but still accessible) state. Lucky for me, there are quite a few of these trails right around where I currently live. This video shows my very first exploration of a Class 6 in the Upper Valley...and it didn't disappoint! I cannot WAIT to check out more of these hidden gems.
Also, in case there's any confusion, Class 6 roads are frequently subject to a "Gates and Bars" regulation, meaning a landowner adjacent to a Class 6 road can place place a gate in front of the entrance to the road. These gates must be publicly accessible such that the road can still be used. Cool stuff!

Great video, really nice filming. Nice looking Tacoma too, what are the specs/mods on it? If you ever want to get together for a trip let me know, I live in Maine, I normally like to go to Vermont to hit trails but NH seems to have some good ones as well. I will be going soon to check out some Class 6's.

Thank you! I have a walk-around video on my account if you'd like to see my truck in detail. That being said, it'll look a lot different this spring. The Vermont Class 4's are my favorite...they're what I grew up wheeling on!

great video.. I am from upstate NY and have already explored Maine.. so not i am on to NH are you allowed to camp on these class 6 roads? not not obviously blocking the roads.. but if there it a opening? just curious on that
@S0nnenberg
@S0nnenberg 2 года назад
Thank you! Regarding camping, I doubt it’s legal to camp on a C6 road, but I could be wrong. Usually the land to either side of a class 6 is private property as well, so be careful with any sort of camping adventures!

The first time I hit a gate like on this I shit a brick, I felt like I did something wrong. Id keep the road names under lock to protect them. You can always share the town, make people that wanna use it do some homework to find them lol.
@S0nnenberg
@S0nnenberg 3 года назад
Lol!! The gates definitely make you think twice. That's a pretty reasonable suggestion about requiring homework, I generally will do that if it's a known sensitive area, but maps of the Upper Valley roads are quite easy to find.
@OSDCrusher
@OSDCrusher 2 года назад
All class VI roads are legal. The gates are installed by abutting landowners to deter usage of the roads by Jeeps and 4x4's. By law, the gates must remain unlocked.

yes indeed.. an electric chainsaw would be nice.. and quieter than gas. Thanks for posting. A little too much there for a brand new truck so I'll look for a milder one at least for now. enjoying it without pinstripes for a while.

How does one go about locating Class 6 roads? Is there a guide or some kind of database?
@S0nnenberg
@S0nnenberg 2 года назад
I get this question a lot…NH doesn’t seem as organized as VT when it comes to legal trail documentation, your best bet is to see if the particular town you’re going to has a highway map database on their town website. There are a few repositories floating around out there that people have pulled together, but you’re rolling the dice if they’re a few years out of date, access can change yearly.

Hey Seth, I'm surprised that someone who says they don't want to damage the Class 6 Road would drive on a road that is totally water logged. This will only cause more damage. When you drive off the established treadway (which you did often) this only widens the erosion that already exists. Just because it's "legal" to drive on Class 6 roads it doesn't mean it's OK to do it when it contributes to the erosion of the road. What fun it is to tear up old roads!!!
@S0nnenberg
@S0nnenberg 10 месяцев назад
Hey there Hugh! Despite your (assumed) well-meaning comment, I disagree with you regarding the condition of this trail for use. While it's not easy to see in video, it was not in any way water logged (some standing water is just a way of life around here, these trails are almost never dry), and while I understand the camera view isn't ideal, I did not leave the tracks. That's virtually impossible considering how tight the trail is. I do appreciate your concern for the trail, good luck with things.
@user-uj3zk2cx8t

Just because you personally do not see this activity as "fun" does not mean that others agree with you. These roads are open to the public and to registered motor vehicles, unless otherwise specified by the town Board of Selectmen

Nice little less used class 6. I do recommend not posting road names. Past few years social media and alike has been hard on the trails in the state. Some have been lost forever same with a few in VT.
@S0nnenberg

I abide by that policy now, for the reasons you’ve mentioned. I see new ones disappear yearly in VT!
