What a great reaction, man. You're really interesting to listen to. You're well-spoken, you notice all these little things that other reactors haven't paid attention to really. I'm a sucker for Forge's songwriting: catchy as hell, very effective and clever but not overdone - get's the dopamine going. And it's been like this since the very beginning of Ghost- Opus Eponymous despite having distinctly different atmosphere and much less polished production has songs like Elizabeth and Ritual that just make you want to hum along with them and seamlessly worm their way to your brain. I loved your analysis, made me pay attention to things I haven't noticed at first, huge thanks :)

Well they actually did do an Abba cover- I'm a Marrionette on the Infestissumam album - which is actually an awesome cover... I don't like many covers but this one was sick.

I just saw Ghost (with Volbeat ant Twin Temple) last Wednesday night - the 5th time I've seen them. Ghost is built to be an arena rock band - Tobias draws influences from SO MANY genres and eras - but as time has gone on, and the songwriting has become more "polished," so to speak, they have lost a bit of that "gloomy" sound - not completely, mind you, but to broaden their appeal. If you want to hear something from the same band with a RADICALLY different sound - I recommend "Con Clavi Con Dio" from their first album. You'll be able to hear how the music has evolved.

Some of the songs off Impera have the gloomy/dread vibe in spades. Watcher in the Sky and the very last track especially. Plus, the final chorus on “Little Sunshine” definitely sounded menacing.

Composer/ vocalist/ bandleader Tobias Forge is a brilliant arranger. Add to the mix producer Klas Ahlund (who also produced their Grammy winning album Meliora) and it's an unstoppable force. Oddly enough, Ahlund is best known for working with artists like Katy Perry, Kesha, Usher & Kylie Minogue.

they are very much a love hate band for people, i think generally tobias voice isnt for some, i personally think they are the most refreshing and intersting rock band in the last ten years combining elements of pop with 80s rock and doom metal

I kind of like that they are in and out of progression, would be cool to see you react on of their instrumental track, such as "Miasma". Catching up on videos today. I'm glad you checked out Ghost! I've been a fan for a long time. Like many comments and you yourself said, they blend old and new so well. I love the use of the organ sounds in every song as well. They're really fun to see live also. Great showman. In fact, there is an ongoing story with Tobias as the lead in the band. You'd have to go back but it pokes fun at themes of Catholicism and it just adds another element. I know many people think it's cheesey and don't understand why they're popular, but the art all around is fantastic. Visuals, sonically pleasing, and theater thrown in as well. I also wouldn't be surprised if someone very well-known engineered this. All the nameless ghouls are said to be really famous musicians that tour with the band for a while and then are replaced with someone else famous. Cool band for sure.

I've loved Ghost for years, and your analysis was great to listen to! Your use of the word "cinematic" to describe their music is spot on. They are great via headphones, but absolutely stellar *live*. So much pomp and showmanship. If you're looking for more tracks to react to, I'd suggest "Cirice", "Square Hammer", "He Is", and "Bible".

Good shout! Awaiting the new album - tough to put it up there with some of their most awesome songs with such a huge catalogue but wets the musical tongue for the new album at least! A band that has an image but can back it up with great playing and live performing. The dark image and lyrics but the hooks of a catchy song and the dark side of it kind of is more subtle!

I've watched probably 5 or 6 reaction videos for this song tonight (yeah, no life) and the reactions were as different as the people giving them, but I've been looking for someone who can express and pick apart a tune and point out the details. I know what I hear and catch many of those things myself, but a knowledgeable point of view from someone can sometimes help me catch a little bit more. I absolutely don't like every or even most Ghost tunes, but there are a small handful that really stand out. Like this one, the others I like seem simple, but there's a lot actually going on. I teach a HS course (Contemporary History through Film), and one of the films I use is an old VH-1 movie "Warning: Parental Advisory" Great to work in the first amendment issues of something that they can relate to in their own lives. We finish the year with them having to rewrite Billy Joel's "We didn't start the fire" with lyrics from 2000 to the present day. (I'm a big fan of "From the Pinnacle to the Pit". Love the opening bass on that one.

Cirice and Square Hammer are probs they're most famous songs, so usually people get introduced to them by hearing those two. Though Ghost have a wide range of music from lighter stuff (it slaps) to heavier songs like Mummy dust (still fucking slaps). Also, absolutely love your accent!

I was hoping you would get to ghost at some point 😁 Tobias Forge is the mastermind and only actual "member" of ghost, doing all the writing and about 90% of the studio instrument playing, and his identity was actually unknown publicly until just before the release of their last album. He has said that he considers himself a fan of music, not a musician, and that he creates music for people who obsess over bands and songs the way that he does. As a music theory nerd and obsessive listener myself, I hear that big time. He'll talk for hours about his favorite bands and producers, and you caught quite a few of them. I have to recommend their epic "Square Hammer" and "Rats." Anyhow, I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts and informed musical analysis, and I'm heading over to the patreon now. 👍🤘

Tobias Forge is the primary author of the majority of Ghost's music but he has worked with a litany of co-writers. The Prequelle album has co-writing credits on every or almost every song, for example. He isn't the auteur some think he is but there's nothing wrong with that either.

Well done. I subscribed because of all the reaction channels on YT, you are the one who seems to have structured the concept the best... short intro, play the song, have a (quiet) physical reaction to it, then slice & dice the song for analysis. Too many "first-time" reactors press pause every 5 secs to speak, sometimes not rewinding and completely losing the flow, (or stopping it right at a crucial musical part/transition), or talk/yell over the top of it, completely destroying the very vibe they are trying to find. You seem to give us the best of both worlds.

Great reaction an analysis. I have a similar response to Ghost in that they make me smile. They are so talented. Borrowing from the past, but not sounding dated. I think they were striving for a "Black Album" vibe on this production. Huge sounding, "pop" but not selling out. Ghost is really one main guy who works with studio talent to create the recordings, and tours with a full live band. Check out Cirice (which this song has some similarities with), Rats (very 80's metal - think Dio/Ozzy), or Dance Macabre (which is "ABBA metal"). Ghose are from Sweden after all.

The album version has a spicy Adams family thing going on (once) before the first verse. It also repeats the chorus at the end which I find is needed. It's also here on RU-vid. Also, the Omen style singing/music over the demon's name in the chorus "Meph-es-toph-el-es" adds that spooky feel to it.

I've liked this band since the debut and really glad they have achieved success. I first saw them live in 2011 and I described them as Blue Oyster Cult in frocks. Saw them on the second album and third. Their third album is their pinnacle for me so far. Haven't seen them live since they became an arena headliner, but I bet it's quite an experience.

Really enjoyed your view on this track. I also (like your friend) saw them supporting Metallica, and was equally blown away. Their stage shows are very slick, but not without their humour (duelling guitars at the beginning of Cirice for example) and they are 100% pure entertainment. Just a brilliant concept of a band, and Tobias is a modern musical hero 👍🏻

Glad that you mention them sounding really simple but actually they're not, definitely... That has to be intentional too, if you check out some of their earlier songs there are some very proggy bits weaved in with stadium rock, catchy hooks and all sorts of quirky takes on existing genres etc... Weird and interesting band that can make seemingly any genre of music they like. And the yes the production is absolutely top tier. Especially love their use of the kazoo 🤔😂

i've been a fan since the first album came out, though i'm mostly a black and death metal fan, ghost is just fun...and that's about it for me.

Never heard of them, catched my ear for sure, for the days when Opeth or Porcupine Tree is just too much and one need something simpler. Reminds me Lordi. Your reactions are great and unique. I guess your music is not accessible on Spotify ?

Ah Ghost is so catchy it's just easy to listen to & bop along with but some clever writing. Danse Macabre is a great example. Lol my Aussie $ would get bugger all in the way of support 🤣 I'm on a giving group on Facebook & I just kinda skip over the Americans & stick to the south east Asian asks lol. Ok so now almost finished watching the reaction - I love how happy this made you! Yeah the Ghost onion layers are epic.

The studio (album) version of call me little sunshine is even better because there are some riff expansions and te solo is longer.

I was going to say that Ghost is basically a modern glam metal band but then you essentially said just that as soon as the song ended. :} Their last album, Prequelle, was right up there with the very best of the glam metal era so I'm very keen to check out their new album when it drops. My tastes these days sway towards the heavily progressive but Ghost manages to reinvigorate my (still very alive) love of Def Leppard, Winger, and Extreme. PS. Their most brain-worm song, imo, is RATS!

Audible stomach rumbling... I'm dead! Great video! Ghost tunes guitars to D standard for 99% of their songs so the key of G is analogous to A in a standard tuning. Motley Crue did a lot in G for the same reason. You've got a new fan!

Some parts of the song have been cut for the music video so be sure to listen to the full thing at some point. Like the intro and solo are both cut in half for instance.
