Tom Petty is one of the greatest song writers of any generation. Love his music, never gets old. Also, Alex being Alex and not seeing any of the first half of the video, only realizing something is weird AFTER watching Tom steal a corpse from a morgue and not registering it at all.
My dad got me into Tom Petty when I was just a little kid, ever since then I've loved his voice... For a beginner I would recommend the songs "American Girl", "Won't Back Down" and "Learning to Fly". Those three songs are the best (in my personal opinion) of his most popular songs
I'd say The Best of Everything, Spike, Make it Better (Forget About Me), The Last DJ, Learning to Fly, Wildflowers, The Apartment Song, Zombie Zoo, Trailer (Mudcrutch but still Tom Petty in General), Money is King, Saving Grace, You Wreck Me, and to end it cause I can name more, Feel A Whole Lot Better.
My favorite Tom petty song. Of course I'm prejudiced being an "Indiana Boy." "Is he dancing with a dead woman?" Who did you think he was taking home from the mortuary? Did you notice it was Kim Basinger as the corpse?
My Mom loves Tom Petty. Because of that I know most of the songs. Definitely check out "you don't know how it feels " . God there's sooo many songs . I grew up with Tom Petty's music always blaring. It's ashame that he's no longer with us. 😥
You should definitely check out Don't Come Around Here No More! It's probably my favorite of theirs though it's a tough call. If you like harmonica no one does it better than Aerosmith's Stephen Tyler!
I always felt that "southern accents" helps you to get a feel for him, and where hes coming from. I would also recommend "stop dragging my heart around" as a duet with Stevie Nicks.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers got me through my teen years. My fav band of all time!!! Since i was 15 everytime he came to Texas i was at the show. One of the best live performers ever. Mike Campbell is a very underrated guitarist. Check out their older songs like "Wild One Forever", "Refugee", and of course "American Girl".
Also! Tom Petty does a live performance of George Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps with Prince and a bunch of other famous musicians. I highly recommend it, if it’s not something that will get hit with a copyright claim automatically.
I highly recommend "You Got Lucky" I loved the video concept, especially as it was early on in the days of Mtv. And "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" with the amazing Stevie Nicks. Two of my all time favorites.
The earliest videos, like Refugee and You Got Lucky actually predated MTV. Refugees was mademso that they wouldn't gavecto appearbon the zMerv Griffin Show. Others were record store promo film. They were meant to be seen a few times. Tom was horrified, when they went into heavy rotation on MTV!
Definitely more Petty reactions! Don't Come Around Here No More, American Girl, Breakdown, or Into the Great Wide Open! Stoner country rock at its best!
@@jenniferl.9947 I believe I heard Johnny played guitar on a Tom Petty track. I just looked up the video. You are absolutely correct Jennifer! 👍❤️ A young Johnny is in the video! So cute! I believe Tom got him to play slide guitar on the track because he was better at it. 😉🥰
If you think it sounds familiar, Tom petty sued Red Hot Chili Peppers because the riff for Dani California is very similar so it could be because of that
Tom Petty and the Peppers are friends and he said the songs may be similar. However the chorus is completely different. I love Tom Petty but Peppers more and are both good songs
Then again Last Dance are very close to The Jayhawks - Waiting For The Sun. They opened for Petty in 1992. And their keyboard player plays on both songs. So there are similarities both that's quite common in music. Both RHCP and Tom Petty were on the same label and both albums were produced by Rick Rubin
I was lucky enough to see Tom Petty in concert a few times before he passed he put on a great show and has had many hits over the years. Check out songs You Don’t Know How It Feels, Runnin’ Down A Dream, Learning To Fly are some good ones to start with
I have loved Tom Petty most of my life. I have Tom Petty EVERYTHING! Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers was the greatest band of my time. They actually have hundreds of songs. Breakdown, was the introduction, and it has never stopped since. Mike Campbell, the guitar player is badass. RIP Tom Petty!
You need to listen to all of Tom Pettys work, he is just an amazing musician and so damn unique and creative. I still remember the day we heard he passed away, i cried for like two days listening to all his amazing songs. Tom is iconic i really wish i could have seen him live in concert.
OH MY MY! OH HELL YES! In my final years of high school, we used to sing this song a whole hell of a lot. It was a big deal. My favorite Tom Petty song ever, though, is Refugee. He has a bajillion hits, though, you could go down this rabbit hole for quite a while. It really broke my heart when I was at the Stevie Nicks concert recently and she played Free Fallin' for him, and cried, and talked about her friendship with him. Her collab with him, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, is pretty fucking fantastic as well. If you like harmonica, you should really get into some Aerosmith, just putting that out there. My boy Steven Tyler can really kill on that thing.
I got to see Tom Petty and the heartbreakers in Grand Rapids Mich in 2005, I was in the states visiting my little sister and she got the tickets for the show as a surprise for me. Fantastic show. 🇬🇧👍
My late uncle was Tom’s doppelgänger, no joke! He also played and made custom guitars. Tom petty was a huge part of my childhood, I cried so much when he passed.
Tom Petty is just perfection. If you love the harmonica so much you need to react to Blues Traveler. I suggest " The Mountains Win Again" or Carolina Blues. You will be impressed
Tom Petty lived in Florida. Northern Florida is the deep South. Central and South Florida are very distinct regions from Northern part and the Southern states. But yes he had a slow pace of living rock songs. It was unique for sure. Also he was part of The Traveling Wilburys. With other legends we lost, like Roy Orbison and George Harrison. They were top of the charts in the 80s and 90s. Trust someone from Gen X who was a teen in the 90s. Great groove to those songs you can enjoy. Long summer drives, in a convertible, top down. Cold beveage and Tom Pertty blasting on the speakers. My idea of heaven I admit. Maybe in the mountauns. Clear skies, blue water, trees and peaks all around.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. You have to listen to Refugee, Breakdown, You Got Lucky, The Waiting, Even the Losers, Here Comes My Girl. Damn there are just too many good ones! Unique sound all around. Coolest rocker. RIP Tom Petty.
Free Falling is a pretty popular song. Petty released solo albums as well as albums with his band the Heartbreakers. If you want to see a bunch of superstars (including Petty) sing together, try something by the Traveling Wilburys.
haha the look on your face the moment he put her in the water was classic. The woman in the video is Kim Basinger a Model/actress who started as a bond girl and also was Eminem's mom in 8 Mile
Running Down a Dream is a must listen - as well as Stop Dragging My Heart Around, where Tom duets with Stevie Nicks. I'd also suggest listening to the tribute to George Harrison - While My Guitar Gently Weeps. You get Tom, Jeff Lynne, Steve Windwood, Dhani Harrison and Prince. Stellar lineup.
I find it super interesting to have watched your evolution from being a hip hop head to listening to these types of songs. I always like when you first love bands or songs that I do, but it's also the little things like you discovering the harmonica. For most of us, we've listened to these songs for most our lives. It's cool to see someone fall in love with the harmonica in front of your very eyes lol.
For flat out weird video, "Don't Come Around Here No More." His was a great concert and I really enjoy the music. Other good songs include "Runnin' Down a Dream, "You Got Lucky" and "Refugee." 🙂❤
Tom petty was a great musician . I loved him being a part of the wilburys too. Such a great line up of talent we will probably never see the likes of again .
yes the travelling willburys ! I found them by accident while trying to look for the song "tweeter and the monkeyman" by the headstones and the one i found didn't have the artist name so when i clicked on it thats how i discovered the travelling willburys. they say curiosity kills the cat, but that day i was one happy cat
Breakdown, Running Down a Dream, Won't Back Down,Stop Draggin My Heart Around(with Stevie Nicks), Refugee, Damn so many good songs, the list goes on an on dude. Tom is Legend and we lost him to early. RIP Tom
The moment you realized what was happening in the video and your eyes got confused… priceless. You were just jamming out and cracking jokes, oblivious to the strange happenings going on!
I'm a big time metalhead and just music enthusiast in general, but Tom Petty has always held a super special place in my heart. He was the first musician I wanted to be like, actually first celebrity I ever idolized. He is such an amazing artist. The thing about him (and the band) are they are just such a solid band, and just as good live as in the studio, but also amazing songwriting, Tom Petty literally has countless hit songs, and all of his songs are good in a different way. He has even written songs that other people recorded and play that you would probably be mind blown to know he wrote it. With that being said I highly suggest checking out "Room At the Top"
I think an explanation of why Tom was so big is the combination of being a cool, driven guy, partnering with quality musicians and producing consistent good, if not "epic" music. This, and the fact that they toured and delivered this quality whenever they performed, which was constant in the late '70's and '80's. Bottom line was that they had a catalog of songs people were attracted to and they gave people their money's worth live. Do that for 40 years and you can be there, too!!!
Square One is still my all time favorite Tom Petty song. I saw Pearl Jam not long after his passing and they covered “Won’t Back Down” which is my other fav. Tom Petty is an icon!
Alex!!! I fucking love you man. I've been watching your videos the whole week. I came here from a Lana Del Rey reaction and realised you're one of the most fun reactors here on RU-vid!!! Big hugs man!!!
Best Tom Petty songs, in my opinion, that are definitely worth a reaction are Breakdown, Runnin' Down a Dream, American Girl, I Won't Back Down and You Don't Know How It Feels.
"Are you dancing with a dead woman?" YES! Did you notice in the beginning of the video that he's in a morgue? Or the toe tag on her when he's wheeling her out on a stretcher? That being said, I agree with your mom. Tom Petty is not one of my favorite artists, but he's okay. 'Mary Jane's Last Dance' is my favorite song of his. Yes, the video is weird, but the song is top-notch. RIP Tom Petty.
Alex: "Why is this girl unconscious in your house?" Me: "Have you not watched any of the damn video!!" Alex "Ummm...no, but, HARMONICA!!!" Alex: (dancing)
If you want to hear some wailing on a harmonica check out Clutch, Electric Worry. Plus Tom Petty used a harmonica in many of his songs. He had it on a Holder around hid neck so he could play it while still using his guitar.
I wont back down, American Girl, Dont do me like that, You don't know how it feels, Into the great wide open, You wreck me, Learning to fly, Runnin down a dream, Refugee, and Flirting with time are all fucking great goddamn songs, everyone deserves a listen. Tom Petty was the best.
Just wanna toss this out there: there is a reason why Tom Petty was part of The Traveling Wilburys, a supergroup that included George Harrison, Jeff Lynn, Bob Dylan, and Roy Orbison, as its youngest member, and why a lot of their songs sound like Petty wrote them. There is a reason why Tom Petty was one of Stevie Nicks' favorite musicians and people, and for why she begged him to let her join The Heartbreakers. There is a reason why Petty was not only included in the memorial to George Harrison, but apparently lead the group that included Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynn again, George's son Dhani, and Prince. You don't have to swoon over every song he ever wrote, but you should always keep in mind that his peers loved and respected him.
Grew up in the 90's as a teen..Tom was around still alive..Making masterpieces when Kurt,Tupac,Biggie, and NWA was around..He started with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers think mostly in 90's Tom Petty Like John Walsh or Eagles Legend's 🐐🐐🐐🐐
Alex you have to react to more Tom Petty! Stop Dragging My Heart Around (ft Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac,) Refugee, American Girl, Learning to Fly, You Don't Know How it Feels, Don't Do Me Like That, Honey Bee. So many!
Love Tom’s music but sadly never got to see him live in concert ( less opportunity here in the UK). Running Down A Dream is a great song and I’d also suggest Breakdown or I Need To Know.
Different bands do different things well that lead to popularity. I think Tom Petty is exceptional at crafting songs that your pre alcoholic aunt can mumble the lyrics and bob her head to.
“Why is she unconscious in your house” Dude, she isn’t unconscious… Mary Jane, yea, it’s SO a person, uh huh. She’s been my date for 40 years, always reliable, never lets you down.
alex was vibing so hard he didnt even notice tom was stealing a body from the morgue 🤣 honestly though i wanna see you react to those songs your mom said she was sending you
Music changed SO MUCH over the course of Tom Petty's career, from the 70s to 2017, but Tom was always Tom, and he was fantastic in a kind of zen southern way. And I'd put the Heartbreakers up against any other backing band in rock history.
Ok, first thing, kudos to mom. Make that list! Now you’re obligated! Tom Petty was one of my most favorites. Always original and so very talented. He passed way too young. RIP you super rock and roller.
