My father has been liking fresh water fishing and I was taught it by him. He always brought me fishing with him when I was a kid. Many of Japanese people don't like outdoor activities but computer games, city shopping or such. So I don't think FireBox or Bark River sells much in Japan. If they did, I would be their dealer here. Thanks.
Thank you for your reply. As a physician myself, it caused me concern to see you eat the raw fish, but figured that as a physician you had more insight into the local risks. It looks like a wonderful way to enjoy your fresh catch.Your videos give us foreigners an nice view into your culture and inspire us and teach bushcraft skills. I am also a flashlight, knife and outdoor enthusiast, so I enjoy ALL of your videos.
Such pristine tropical forest. We used to have the same abundance in the Philippines...mismanagement, greed and just plain carelessness for our natural resources has about all but disappeared. Very sad indeed...Great video Sir...
prosickguys9 GT I've been wanting to do outdoor activities here in the phil, especially in the mountains but the fear of terrorists or rebels hinders us
Doc, this is one of my favorite videos. It shows plenty of fishing, and bush craft. I have started following in your footsteps on this hobby. I have ordered several knives to start my own collection, the first being a Benchmade 162. I have also bought bush craft knives for my two boys and my son in law. We will be travelling on a family vacation this Fall to Southeast Oklahoma (USA) where we have mountain streams to trout fish and practice bush craft.
I have never heard of a parasite disease caused by raw fresh water trout. Carps of sort sometimes cause it. And big sea trouts and salmons sometimes cause it. But small trouts which live only in rivers are safe even eaten in raw. Thanks.
As with all of your videos this left me wanting to learn the skills of outdoors. You are a very inspirational human being and one with an outstanding ability to explain his craft concisely. Keep up the brilliant vid's
Really enjoyed this video, very relaxing. The forest and stream is very similar to here in Oregon, northwest U.S. I have been to Japan when I worked for Mitsubishi and loved it, but the only open country I was able to see was out the train window.
I enjoyed your video alot. As a often user of the norwegian mountains, I think bushcrafting is much the same all over the world. Relaxing, enjoing the nature and harvesting. Take care and thank you for sharing.
This reminds me of my youth when our river was wild. And now that river is a trickle in a concrete channel. Many thanks to you for reminding me of the joy and beauty of those days. I envy you.
I just discovered your videos and enjoy them very much and subbed. It was relaxing to watch. I will be buying one of those Firebox stoves, another discovery thanks to you. Thanks for bringing us along!
I am a fly fisherman and I enjoyed your fishing vidio. I liked the watching you prepare and cook the fish with the beautiful stream in the background. Thanks for making the vidio
I work for the town near there and on the way back home I drop by the river. Anyway if we want to fish trouts this easily, we need to drive at least 3 hours from Sapporo city like for deer hunting. Trout fishing is popular on this Hokkaido island. Thanks.
Enjoyed watching an application of all you have learned over the years. Seems like you have your system well sorted out. I just received my silky gomboy 240 in the mail from Japan. I'm impressed by the quality and finish. Looks and feels like it will last forever. I plan to buy another!
can you please make more videos about your fly fishing. You are very gifted man. I enjoy your high quality stuff...please more about fly fishing..about flyes...and the rest
Like youre videos, specially those about smal creek fishing and the joy and enthusiasm you have. Simple "busucraft" with no high tech. Like it a lot....looking forward to see more of youre videos :D
I enjoyed this video very much, Wako. I went trout fishing last week. In California, we are only allowed five trout per day. My friend told me that he intended to eat his trout raw. I would like to, but I worry about parasites. They might not be a problem, but I don't have enough knowledge on the subject to be safe.
Batman called and he wants his utility belt back! : ) Just kidding man. Looks like a great, peaceful time there. You are well decked out in cutting tools. I wish I could sharpen one as well as you.
Wako, sorry if you talk about my question in the video (I do not have time to watch it now) - does Japanese laws allow you to own and carry machete or similar type of brush tools or is prohibited like knives with blade bigger than 6 inches and is the machete in Japanese laws something equal to knife/big knife?
The gun and sword law simply says "Swords of which blade length is over 6 inches are illegal to own". An officer can arrest us based on the law when we carry a knife and someone calls an officer to see it offensive. No officer will take Nata offensive, and it can be called SWORD by no means. But Machete looks offensive and an officer will take it as a sword. The law is applied case by case. Thanks.
Thanks for another great video Mr. Wako! I would like to suggest that you tape the sound of the bear bells ringing. This way you can play the sound while you are sitting still and it will give the bears the same effect. I noticed when you are filleting or eating you are not making any noise for bears. Just a suggestion. Thanks again!
i really love your fishing videos for a change. there aren't any dirt road tracks leading to rivers in my place here in Gifu. I was wondering how come you dont use a longer machete for tall grass and trees. It is more versatile in those areas where there are no paths. But it is only my personal preference. Keep up the good job. Keep doing more fishing videos too
Tenkara is a traditional stream fishing method in Japan before the current fly fishing was introduced to Japan. I think Tenkara is still popular on the mainland where the streams are steeper and small deep spots come from next to next. On this Hokkaido island many rivers are flatter and the casting range needs to be longer than the mainland. So we rarely do Tenkara here. Thanks.
Hokkaido island is completely different from the mainland. Fallen leaves or dead grass along the river were a bit wet. Consuming useless energy to ignite bad natural tinder tires us a lot and we should take easy tinder if we have it. For survival training natural tinder is always my interest though. Thanks.
Optimally, you will have a small amount of very dry tinder in your survival kit and then gather or make new tinder during your daily activities. I agree that trying to light wet tinder is frustrating. I have watched your previous bushcraft and tinder-making videos, so I know that you are well-prepared.
This watch is solar powered radio adjusted and will last more than 10 years. This watch is very comfortable around my wrist different from old versions. I am a knife collector but am not a watch collector. Thanks.
Aloha Wako san. Do you also Tenkara fish? I have many fly rods but here in Hawai'i most streams very small so Tenkara fishing works very well here so I tenkara more than regular fly fish now.
grate video .For Damascus carbon steel ferric chloride is best to get the paten back after sharpening, but it is not safe to use indoors be careful if you do try ferric chloride.
Your videos show an aspect of Japan that is much different from the commonly publicized (in the U.S.A.) densely populated urban areas to the south of you. @9:07 you said "almost impossible." Were the wood shavings wet and difficult to light? Also, that lunch looks delicious.
All the trophies got last season have already gone somewhere. If you need one this coming season, please let me know when you see a nice trophy on my coming video. Thanks.
Very nice video. Just one question. What weight fly line are you using? I'm surprised you don't use Tenkara! (although the long Tenkara rod isn't suitable for forest fishing). I use Tenkara and western rods depending on the river. I have the firebox too - excellent piece of kit. They've just brought out an upgrade.
+Fin I use #4 double taper floating line and 4× leader line. Tenkara rod is too long when I climb up our small rivers with bushes. I checked the revised Firebox has two holes to insert wood sticks from there. Thanks.
when i do kindleing/tinder prep,i lay out a bandana from my kit, that way I can catch any lose pieces touse and in the winter it keeps them out of the snow...plus a bandana has a hundred other uses, for $2.giv`er a try, that was a fun vid!
What is it u do to hurt so many of your fingernails . It seems like u always have one coming off or growing out . Another great video. Did u say u drove 5 hours to get to that fishing spot ??
It is cKc Belt Knife drop point hunter version made by Kyley Harris aka knivesandstuff on RU-vid from New Zealand. I guess this model was discontinued. Thanks.
I splitted wood with Toyokuni bushcraft knife. I have some recent videos on it. I did sashimi with Mora Black and cKc Belt Knife made by Kyley Harris aka knivesandstuff on RU-vid. Thanks.
hi thanx for Amazing knife vids and sharpening vids... oh and not to forget hunting fishing vids. Are the trout native in japan or are they planted ?? A small Tip ! did see one of ur vids u and ur family whent to river camping fishing and ur wife was fileing trout and it was slipery ... dont start in tail ! Start at the head to tail.... and hold on to head and u have very good grip... Bye :)
I use Panasonic HX-WA20 water proof camera. The current model is HX-WA30. I always use its 720-30p mode for RU-vid. I have Sony Handycam HDR CX430 as well for night videos and indoor videos. It is much nicer for auto focus, darkness adaptation, super wide, super tele, and anti vibration. It also has 720-30p mode. Thanks.
Hi, Great videos thank you for them, just thought I would mention that hanging your scissors from the neck could be very dangerous if you slipped. I'm sure you are very experienced but please be careful, on your belt with the knives probably best! Anyway thanks again and congratulations on your great English pronunciation.
Thanks for the video, I always enjoy your adventures, if you haven't already check out the forums over at Bushcraft USA. They even have a free bush class. It is a lot of fun. Thanks for the videos
