That old Georgia flag I was on the back of my Georgia history textbook and I asked my teacher about it and all she said was "We don't talk about that..."
Hawaii was never ruled by the British, they were just trying to make the most neutral flag possible including elements from many of the flags seen in the countries ports.
As a matter of fact, Hawai'i is to this day an illegally occupied sovereign state. U.S. control is de facto and has no legal legitimacy. Public Law 103-150 openly admits it.
Jayson Flint Except that’s absolute crap. Was the Hawaiin monarchy overthrown in a legally dubious (and ethically horrendous) legislative power grab-absolutely. But the subsequent annexation by the US was perfectly legal under internation law at the time (though again, not ethically). Furthermore, your citation of Public-Law 103-150 is problematic for three reasons. 1) Despite its name, it does not actually carry the force of law, nor is it a treaty or international declaration by which the US would be bound. 2) The sentiments stated in the “law” are somewhat ahistorical, as the while the US intervention in the Hawaiian coup was a mess, the Hawaiian Legislature instigated the coup against the Queen, then opted to join the US. By most international laws, even today, a legislature has the right to depose an executive and ask to join another nation. The native Hawaiians gave up sole right to the island when the Hawaiian King instituted land reforms and elections which gave power to foreigners (again, this is not a statement on whether he should have, but simply that he did). 3) Lastly, native Hawaiians are a small minority on the islands today, and as their own king legally sold Hawaiian land and allowed white Hawaiians into government, it is simply not true that they have any greater legal claim to the entirety of the islands than its other inhabitants.
IIRC, the Hawaiian flag has a Union jack on it *not* because the British made it that way, but because the Hawaiian king was a big Anglophile and thought Queen Victoria would like his gesture
Yes. This is why it's not a normal red/blue ensign as well. I believe they added the stripes to placate the US, whose power was growing in the region, in an attempt to keep from getting conquered. (Spoiler alert: the US conquered Hawaii anyway, which is why they've kept the Union Jack flag they used as an independent kingdom.)
lastbreathsigh I’ve heard this story too. There seems to be a lot of different legends about the origin of the flag. One of the commenters below says the stripes represent an attempt to curry favor with the Russians.
The Luxembourgish flag actually uses a lighter blue and red than the Netherlands. Luxembourg 🇱🇺 Netherlands 🇳🇱 Loved the video tho (I’m another huge flag nerd)
Kyle Bennett I don't think Luxembourg has a navy, it doesn't even have access to the coast lol. The alternative flag actually comes from the coat of armd of the house of Luxembourg, used to be the most influential power in the Holly Roman Empire in a brief time during the middle ages, had control of Bohemia and large portions of modern day Germany and Poland, yeah Luxembourg used to be huge compared to how it is today
Oscar Blanco yeah the Holly Roman Empire didn't really have countries in it in the modern sense it was quite a mess internal squables, fleeting aliances and power plays, it's honestly quite surprising it managed to exist for such a long time
Hey JJ, nice to see you like brazilian flag. A fun/weird story about it is the meaning of the colors. We brazilians used to learn in school that the green represents our forests, the yellow represents our gold and the blue represents our sky. Actually, the current brazilian flag is an updated version of our imperial flag, which had the same design, but the imperial coat of arms instead of the blue circle. The green comes from the portuguese house of Bragança, from where our 2 kings were from, and the yellow comes from the austrian house of Habsburg, from where Leopoldina, our 1st king's wife, came from. When we turned into a republic, they just put the blue circle representing the night of its proclamation.
The flag of the former "Empire of Brazil" is awesome! The cross represented the Order of Christ, the Portuguese variation of the mighty Templars that discovered Brazil and which the Portuguese Royal Family is a part of. And the leaves are coffee plant on the left and tobacco plant on the right. The two main good from Brazil back then. Curious is that this cross of the Order of Christ/Templars symbol is still present in the Shield of the Brazilian soccer team. Funny isn't it? upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/55/Flag_of_Empire_of_Brazil_%281822-1870%29.svg/2000px-Flag_of_Empire_of_Brazil_%281822-1870%29.svg.png
Another note about our flag is the origin of the motto: it's an abbreviation of the motto of Comte's Positivism, (loosely translated) "Love as the principle, order as the basis, progress as the goal". I have an ambivalent relationship to the flag. I like the design and the colours, but I dislike the subservient symbolism of the imperial colours, and, really, positivism? Come on. I wish they would remove the motto altogether.
Fernie, I would love to see the motto gone. I really like the design of our flag despite its origins and the lies we teach children about it. Anyway, it stands out. But text on a flag? C’mon.
the imperial flag with it's coat of arm's on it would nowaday be called "seal on a sheet" and considered a bad design. removing the coat of arms and replacing it with a much simpler picture of the Rio de Janaeiro nightskye is an improvement. But another crime against vexillogy is text on a flag. you can't read text on a distant flag waving in the wind. so leave that out.
Oh my god, I was in high school when we had that Georgia flag (I've been in Georgia most of my life.) It was the ugliest thing in the world. We used to call it a restaurant placemat where you had all of your menu options at the bottom.
Actually, Georgia's current flag still references the Confederacy. If you take out the Seal, it's exactly the same flag as the CSA's first national flag.
I grew up with a nerdy fascination with flags, too. You mentioned cheap quality flags and better quality flags. One thing that stands out for me is the height:length ratio. (Your flag of Canada looks like a proper 1:2 ratio, and your flag of the US looks like a proper 10:19 ratio.) Nations and states not only legislate the colors and patterns for their flags, they usually specify the dimensions as well. Most screen printed "cheap" flags will come in a 3:5 ratio regardless of what the flag's proper ratio is.
The crosses on the flag of Amsterdam are crosses of saint Andrew ( I think). One cross symbolizes a flood. Two crosses symbolize a fire and three symbolize the plague. I am not sure is this true because I am not Dutch, but I was in Amsterdam and that's what the guide told us.
Thank you for covering the Bavarian flag! I'm a Bavarian patriot and I find it really sad that we are not well known, despite all our products being world famous (BMW, Audi, Oktoberfest, even the word "Krauts" that refers to German is not German at all but Bavarian). By the way, we are not a province but a country (Land) in the federal republic (Bund) of Germany. More specifically we are a "Free State", which originally was the German word for "Republic".
He claimed more mass shootings happened in Quebec than any other place in Canada and that this was due to our culture apparently: montrealgazette.com/opinion/columnists/opinion-washington-post-article-paints-a-distorted-picture-of-quebec
I’m from South Carolina, and the SC flag actually has a very interesting history to it. In the American Revolution, the British attempted to seize the port city of Charleston. To defend the city, Col. William Moultrie was to construct a fort at the entrance to the harbour. Because they were pressed for time, the fort was constructed out of palmetto logs. The fort surprising held against cannon fire due to the logs absorbing the shock, so the palmetto tree is now our state tree. Also, the “moon” is actually a gorget. Don’t know about that one.
Im from SC!!!!!! I hardly ever hear youtubers talk about us so it’s a nice treat to see our flag. It’s also not a crescent moon, believe it or not, it’s a piece of armor that is worn around the neck. And the palmetto tree is very important to our history. Our flag is actually quite interesting
Being from India I always cringe a little when someone throws a country flag to the floor, because if someone ever did that to the Indian flag, we have a tendency to overreact...
1234567890q If they removed the Liberian state flag and didn't use purple and green, they might be fine. For example, a green tree with *neat* (not like some preschooler scribbling a tree in crayon) on a brown landscape would be solid.
Rodolfo Lopez You know Liberia was Americas only African colony of course it didn't last long as in 1847 Liberia became an independent nation. (For more info look it up) :)
I think a video on flag redesigns is a great idea. Pocatello just replaced their horrible horrible hideous flag with a brand new flag a year or so ago. Orlando redesigned their hideous flag. Many places have done that due to being made fun of online and in the press.
5:10 That's the flag of Amsterdam. Easy!!! Well, a few years ago I bought a hoodie with that flag on it and I always think twice before I wear in the United States because ignorant people might confuse that with the Confederate flag.
He published an article demonstrating that Quebec is culturally less tolerant and more racist than any other Canadian province (citing numerous examples). Apparently the Quebeckian legislature has nothing better to do than police the internet for anglophone criticism of their nation-but-not-a-country-because-we-were-too-scared-to-actually-declare-independence. So they ended up passing a resolution denouncing J.J. for his impertinence.
9:41 No, the flag of Luxembourg has a lighter shade of blue compared to the flag of THE NETHERLANDS and plus, Luxembourg doesn’t have a standing navy since it’s landlocked
The Prince Flag, the variant with orange, is widely associated with extreme-right fanatics and neo-nazism. Therefor that flag is never used. Also, the red was used instead of orange long before the French came along with their new flag.
Just cut the red and we got Indonesia's flag. That is how we got our flag to this day.Never know who ripped off the red but I'm not sure he is alive to this day as there was a lot of fight in a Dutch-majority area and at that time of the birth of Indonesia's flag.Maybe he was dead after being killed by a Dutch/British soldier but who knows
The Texas flag legislative motion was put forth by a State Senator from northwest Houston named Tom Oliverson. As for the current flag of Georgia (US), it's still technically a Confederate emblem, as it takes from the Stars and Bars flag. All Georgia did was add the state seal in the stars within the canton. At least the seal is monochromatic.
I love the Brazilian flag. And it's not just because my favorite color is green. I just think flags should be more unique in design and not the same few patterns with different colors. This is why my favorite flags are examples such as Brazil, Kenya, Switzerland, South Korea, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
The flag of the Luxembourg Navy was created after their first naval combat against the Bolivian Frigate Squadron in 1825. The battle was so legendary other countries without sea access started making navies in honour of the fallen during the battle
Actually, on the South Carolina flag, the “moon” in the top left corner is actually an emblem that was on caps of South Carolina’s soldiers during the Revolutionary War and at Fort Moultrie.
Fun fact! The Chilean flag is called “La Estrella Solitaria” or the lonely star and was adopted by Chile in 1817, 22 years before Texas, so not only did Texas take heavy inspiration from the flag, but also the name!
Quick correction: Hawaii has that flag because the then king of Hawaii was gifted one by a British captain and liked it so much, that he had a new flag designed with that on it to honor the Hawaiian friendship with the British.
The Luxembourgish flag with the lion is the historical flag of the duchy of Luxembourg and is also used to represent the greater Luxembourg cultural area which includes parts of Belgium and France
Can you do a video explaining why as a Canadian you love the USA so much? Also, can you do a video explaining the thing with Quebec denouncing you? P.s. Love your videos. Thanks!
I think it'd be weird if being Canadian or Americans means hating the other! We are essentially the same country with a similar culture. EVEN OUR DIFFERENCES ARE CONNECTED IN SOME WAYS!
I'm a full blown hoarder except that I don't buy much but the things I do buy I keep the boxes, most of the packaging etc so I'm kinda crazy 😂 I wasn't so shocked you had loads of flags, I was more shocked at how big many of them were. Also, because of what you said about Korean people in Japan- I'd recommend watching Vox Borders North Korea's Bubble In Japan (some thing like that) as it might give you a perspective on some thing you didn't know, if you didn't already know it. On the subject of Japan, OH MY GOD YOU LOOK DIFFERENT BACK THEN 😂😍 How easy/difficult was it to find that picture? Doesn't look too old, based on the photo quality. On a different subject, your use of sound effects was a little too often and a little too well placed because it made me jump a couple times 😂 Loved your video, can't wait for the next one!
Great video but why would a landlocked country like Luxembourg have a navy and a naval jack like you said at 9:58 that flag is in fact just an official variant based on their coat of arms
Sometimes landlocked countries have riverine navies, that consist of patrol boats, Monitors etc. I'm not sure if this is the case with Luxembourg specifically though.
I’m from Ohio and I know the pain for cutting out your own flag to fly it! I like the design but hate buying a flag that isn’t ready to fly out of the box
Ok JJ.... I paused 9 seconds in to write this because I see that horrible Denny's place mat they called my state flag for 2 years. Ok, back to the show.
The moon on the South Carolina flag is not a moon. It actually is a metal badge the soldiers in South Carolina wore in the ARW. Don't worry about getting that wrong though, because I didn't know this either and I'm from SC.
as a fellow flag collector, one of my main issues is when I buy flags, they usually come folded up with a lot of creases in them and I can never seem to get them out, (I even ruined one trying to wash it) so I was wondering if you would be so kind as to tell me how you got creases and wrinkles out of your flags, great video btw
The Ohio flag shape is officially called a "swallowtail". If you spend more than $20 US, you will get one that is the proper shape... JJs is an example of what you get when you buy a less expensive version on Amazon.
@@AdamSmith-gs2dv The crescent on the South Carolina flag is quite distinguishable from the Islamic star and crescent, and it has a symbolic meaning going back to the American Revolution. As a fan of flags, I don't think there's any good reason to remove it from probably my favorite state flag.
2:00 The Hawaiian flag was made by King Kamehameha, with a Union Jack, Russian Flag and the 3 colors of the American flag on it to symbolize it's friendship with those countries.
How I remember the difference between the Cuban and Puerto Rican flags is which every one has the blue behind the star that's the Puerto Rican flag🇵🇷 because the US flag🇺🇲 has blue behind the 50 stars and Puerto Rico is owned by the US.
I also believe Hawaii was never controlled by Britain (officially). I think a captain misunderstood orders or something and took over the islands for a short period of time, but the British corrected the mistake. I don't remember where I saw that so I could very well be wrong.
JJ, I almost certain you got the story of the Hawaiian flag wrong. My understanding is that during the War of 1812, King Kamehameha I created the flag to be a combination of the British, Russian, and US flags so not as to offend any of the great Western powers in the Pacific. So it is not only the independence of America lite, I mean Canada, but also the Hawaiian flag that we have to thank for the War of 1812. Also, and I'm not certain about this, I think the Lords of Baltimore were Irish.
Hi JJ! I am starting a flag collection and was wondering what size flag you would recommend. Thank you! (sorry if I made any mistakes still learning English)
I find it amusing that Georgia´s present flag is the actual confederate flag, but since it´s not the confederate battle-flag it pleased the weak-minded..
KnowOne yeah, one of my professors was from Georgia, when I asked whether he didn’t like the idea of changing the confederate flag, he smiled and said, “well we change it for the official Confederate, and no one noticed”
Yea no one knows about that flag, hell people call the battle flag "the stars and bars" sometimes when that was the official name for the official flag of the Confederacy not the battle flag!
actually this luxembourg flag you showed is based on the coat of arms and NOT on the navy flag, in fact luxembourg does not have a navy because it s a landlocked country. :)
The Maryland flag is interesting because the gold & black part is really the arms of the Calverts, the Barons of Baltimore. Those Marylanders who fought for the Union in the Civil War used the arms of Calvert as their flag while those Marylanders fighting for the Confederacy (because Maryland was a slave state but didn't secede) used the red & white cross bottony portion as their flag, this being the arms of the first Baron Baltimore's wife & thus mother of the 2nd Baron Baltimore.
jan Kansi so you’re saying the québécois have mind readers and will only allow thoughts to be in French? I mean that sorta kinda possibly makes sense if you think about it
Also, I was at the beach a few years ago at this place called Pierre Park in in the parking lot on the backside. This restaurant on the backside people sat there. It was like when they stored stuff but on the railing, they had some feather flag flying, and that was the first time I ever seen this style so when I ever would Style it made me think of that, but maybe this is where they got it from
Well, actually Germany has lander, so it depends on how you translate land to English. But I believe the 1871 German imperial constitution used the word staaten (states), and the framers of the Weimar Constitution in 1919 chose the word land instead.
My favorite flag is the Region de Magallanes one, with the southern cross in it. For them is also a symbol about a particular identity within my country, Chile.
A landlock country! It's the Civil Ensign. You can use it on a boat if you wish to show that you're from Luxembourg or are a merchant for the country. Other than that, there is no navy!
I decided to keep a flag of all the places I visit and that have flags. So I have... four. But feeling optimistic! It's hard to live on one end of a continent.
