Michael Tabor 1 year ago ZZ Top is from Texas. In1989 DJ DMD (also from Texas) had a rap song called "25 Lighters". When ZZ Top's studio was being worked on they shared a recording house with a bunch of hip-hop artists. They got to be pretty good friends and ended up reworking the song. BTW, in Houston, dealers used to take Bic Lighters apart, remove the inside and fill them with crack. So yeah, this song is about slinging rocks.
R.I.P. Dusty Hill. Classy guys, awesome music for decades. I've been listening to ZZ TOP since I was a kid and saw them live on the Eliminator tour which I think had 6 or 7 hugely popular videos on Mtv at the time. They were excellent live.
Believe it or not but this is a cover of a rap song called “25 lighters” by DJ DMD (ft. LIL KEKE & Fat Pat). Billy Gibbons talked w the guys and asked if he could do a bluesy cover and they said yes. Going through a box of old ticket stubs not long ago, My first rock concert May 19, 1973 (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I've come to find out) East Tennessee State University Rory Gallagher ZZ Top $4 It was about six months before Tres Hombres came out. Rory Gallagher was pure fire right out of the gate, and I think he had as much fun as anyone. (& someone you should check out) Then, BG and the boys came out. Back when they were the most badass blues rock band that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards (but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Needless to say, Rory and BG made a big impression on a 16 yr old. Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since. RIP Dusty, Rory, Lou, Rod. Thank You!
Awsome rework of Texas rap legends DJ DMD's, Lil' Keke, and Fat Pat's song, 25 Lighters. Lil' Keke and Fat Pat had already passed away and ZZ Top got permission from their estate to rework the track, .25 Lighters is a classic rap song. ZZ Top is so cool. I'm glad I got to see them live.

No, they were already famous before the beards. Then they went on separate vacations. Billy and Dusty came back with beards and they decided to keep them.

Z Z Top and their beards was a unintended consequence... it was also a huge coincidence that their drummer (without a beard!) is Frank Beard...😂When Z Z Top released their first album in 1971, the trio (guitarist Billy F. Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill & drummer Frank Beard) did not have those trademark beards. They were a band from Texas that played bluesy, boogie rock n' roll... They toured relentlessly into 1977 and built their success from the ground up w/ a string of albums. What happened was... around 1977, drummer Frank Beard ended up in rehab after years of substance abuse & wanted to get clean... The other members of Z Z Top were loyal & did not want a new drummer. So, the band took a break, while Frank Beard took some time off... Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill went away to their homes and spent the next two years fishing or doing non-music activities; neither shaved during that time... When Z Z Top got back together in 1979 to work on a new album, Gibbons & Hill showed up w/ huge beards from years of not shaving... When they rehearsed, I guess they thought they had a striking image... so they decided to keep the beards and went on tour for the 1979 album 'Deguello' (which became a platinum success in the US) and everybody recognized them as the band w/ the 2 bearded guys and 1 clean-shaven guy named Frank Beard... When MTV started putting their music videos on, that image was a huge hit in 1983 cos Z Z Top was instantly recognizable. The band was allegedly offered 7 figures to shave them off - they refused! 😂😂

Absolutely, they made the long beards famous. At least Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill, RIP, wear them that way. The only one who doesn't have a beard, is Frank (ahem) Beard.

Loving your reactions to rock music man... You have to get some 90's Grunge in there. Nirvana (obvious I know)... Or some Green Day, you can go old school with the hits from Dookie or, anything from American Idiot which was the last good rock album of this century, IMHO..
