In order for cars to be extraordinarily valuable, they need to go through a period of time where no one cares about them. For every super-expensive car, there are usually a few owners with stories just like this.

Thing is Lamborghini was like what Tesla is today. It was a recent start up and had been around for just a few years as a sports car company. People went down to this... "random" sports car company and just bought a car that they thought looked good. Who knew they'd appreciate so much in value today? I found the car in Marco Island, FL in 2007 and it was not for sale but the security guard for the building knew the owner and called him. He came down and I was prepared to go right to the bank and get him $10k (my hard #). He was willing to sell it but his # was $12k. Like an idiot, I walked away. Near as I can tell, that car, in the same shape, is $150-160k. If it had a black interior, I don’t know what I would have done.

Same thing happened to hemi muscle cars in the 70s and 80s. Thousand bucks or less would’ve bought you a good example of a 4 speed hemi cuda. And unlike the ferraris which were thoroughbred race cars with double digit production numbers, the old muscle cars were just regular mass produced road cars with big engines, and that reflected on how they were treated. People cut them up, painted flames on them, parked them in the grass outdoors. At the time they were just another used car. Now that same car is rolling across the auction block for millions. Just goes to show that whether it’s a car or a baseball card, you should always find out what it is you have before throwing it away or selling it.

I wrote my masters dissertation on classic cars. They do outperform the S&P 500 for example but if you factor in maintenance costs, insurance, storage, etc. their only value as an investment is their negative correlation with more conventional assets. With that being said, that negative correlation disappears as soon as a a shock event takes place which means that they drop in value during recession (duh).

A user's grandfather on a community website I'm on had a similar experience. His grandfather was working with some company that had investments in some car dealers. So one day, his grandfather gets a promotion and gets to pick between two cars he was presented with as a promotion compliment - A brand new Ford Coupe of some sort and a used race winning Ferrari 250 TDF. His grandfather chose the Ford because it was new and that Ford was a reputable company. Fast forward into 2010s, that same 250 TDF that his grandfather was offered was sold at an auction for $14m! He says his grandfather regrets not getting the Ferrari when he could've 😂

My dad owned a supra that he bought used in the United States and took it to Mexico he told me he liked the car but it was impractical because my mom couldn’t drive stick so he sold it to a family friend who he also sold a gran marquis too for 10k in usd which was just sad to hear he said it only had 9 thousand miles and was Stick and he only found out about the values when I showed him one on the internet that was going for almost 60k and he said son I used to own that car.

My Grandfather sold the 1969 Shelby GT500 convertible he bought new in 1987. It had very low mileage and was in mint original condition when he sold it. Wish it was still in the family.

Not only in value, but overall, I much prefer GTO much more than Miura!

Amazing history, but you cant blame your grandfather. The Lamborghini Miura is a beautiful vehicle. GTO will always be a GTO. Both sexy.

Props to the current owner for still using the car and not getting distracted by the value.

My grandfather has a similar type of story regarding the L88 Corvette, another incredibly rare and valuable car. He also at the time made a profit on the car, actually it was quite the quick turnaround profit way back in the day.

Can well believe this. In the mid 70's passed a garage showroom and there was a 275 GTB in the window for around £2500 !! Even the crappy new fibreglass Marcos next to it was dearer !

I found a 61 LWB 250 GT Spyder on a local car lot in Baton Rouge, La for $5500. I was a senior in college and had just bought my first new car ever...a 67 Pontiac GTO for $3250. I knew the car as it had been owned by our plant manager and I often road in it when the guy that handled our fleet took it out for its Friday exercise. Given I had financed the GTO there was no way I could actually buy the car, but I have often thought about it.

My buddy's grandpa didnt mess up that hard but it still hurts. He sold an all original, numbers matching, perfectly mint (even factory tires on it still) 1969 superbird for $10k about 15 years ago and wow is that sad to hear today.

I understand your fathers sentiment, in 1972 I was 10 and my cousin owned a 1969 Mach 1 S code (390ci.) he would take me for rides from time to time. I washed and waxed that car like it was a museum piece, it was the first car that I drove and the first car that I was in at 100mph (Passenger). Later in life I could afford just about any Mustang that I wanted but searched out a 390 Mach 1 just because of the memories. The car will always be special to me even though it's not the exact same car from my youth.

Several car collector friends have given me the same advice about buying cars. Don't buy purely to try to make a profit or as an "investment". Buy what YOU like. If you get lucky and the car appreciates, good for you. If it doesn't, well, you had a lot of fun driving around in a car you're passionate about. They all DRIVE their cars too! Taking their EB110, TdF, GT40, or Miura to go get the groceries, or to run an errand. Any excuse to drive them.

That's why I bought my FJ Cruiser. I knew that it would go up in value and now they are getting to that starting point where clean original examples are fetching what they sold for new (depending on certain factors). In time these will be going up in value and may even command ridiculous money. Anybody that doubts this should just look at what Blazers, Broncos and Wagoneers are going for. All these vehicles were WAY undervalued 10 years ago and everyone wants a clean one now. It's the generational cycle of disposeable income. When you get some money you buy what you wanted as a kid. Plain and simple.

A Briton, David Piper, had owned at least one of these cars back in the day, he said he sold his last car, because his wife didn't like it. Nowadays, he's saying he should've held on to it. The only difference between the featured story and David Piper's is, Piper kept his other cars, and his "other" cars were, 2 Ferrari 250LMs (the replacement of the GTO), Ferrari sports racing prototypes P2 and P3/4, Porsche 917, to name some. The P3/4 he owns is unique since it is built after the production of the car has ended, Ferrari had provided him with a chassis for it!

I lived in London a couple of years from 1990-93. In one car shop there was a Jaguar XJ220 for sale, and the price was around 120.000 pound, which was less than half of it's value from the factory - and nobody wanted it. That car today is worth around 500.000 pound, which is not a huge increase, but I believe it will raise to astronimical value in the next 20 years...
