The piston has a serial # on it that Ford will know matches the engine serial #, this is how you can verify the origin of that piston

Ford said “everything’s fine” because they don’t wanna fix shit like this under warranty.

The rings likely synced up when they hit the marring in the cylinder wall, which prevented them from rotating further.

I've been seeing a few of this cars with the same problem i guess it's a more common issue then i thought.

I think livernois motorsports can sleeve it for you. Also, I would give Darton a call. I dont mess with dual overhead cam bs for this very reason. Ford Windsor V8s NEVER have these problems so.....that's what I stick to. Anyway, good luck. I can see that you are gonna need it.

Just put the motor back in remove the twin turbo kit and put it back to stock then return it to ford

I was kinda sceptical when Ford decided not to sleeve the Voodoo and Coyote blocks in favor of plasma arc coating. If it was sleeved, this would be a simple rebuild.

Had a similar problem, car was down Sept. through Oct., with my Coyote. Should have requested pictures of the problematic cylinder. Got a new piston and head assembly put in.

You can save those heads I have a set that has the similar issue I use some Sandra Rolls And some buffers clean them right up no issues no clearance issues at all

I can say from experience. I have seen stock coyote rod bearings look exactly how yours did. Even worse. With low mileage and regular oil change intervals.

If you turbo the engine you need to do some research on the correct ring gaps . Usually the ring gaps are increased to allow for the increased heat from turbocharging . You can sleeve that cylinder .Engine looks like it was run low on oil . Check the ring gaps . I worked as a Ford dealer tech for years . The techs don’t usually repair engines .

@itsjusta6 What happened is when the piston's ringland broke, it sent metal debris through the engine. When it got a new piston and sent down the road, they may have changed the oil, but the metal shavings never got flushed out of the passages. Those rod bearings look like metal trash got in them. Dirt does not score like that, nor does sand. Usually dirt and sand embed in the coating. The metal shavings in the motor also explain why the bearing surfaces on the cams are trash. Get that block sleeved or honed depending on what your personal machinist says. Either way it can't go back to service without fully cleaning all passages in the block. Good luck man.

Stick a junkyard LS engine in it and see how quickly Ford replaces that motor. Make sure to make lots of videos with it.

I would take the block back to Ford with the Piston out with your findings and having a lawyer come with you to make sure it gets fixed for new motor

You can still use the stock heads. Have the caps milled and align bore the cam journals back to spec diameter.

@itsjusta6 i had a 383 stroker in a s10 and pulled it and installed into a 94 camaro ,long story short pulled motor again for another truck and found out whole time was only on 7 cyl too but never could tell performance wise tho

All of the GT350 engine issues stopped me from buying one and ended up going the Camero route. Still luv the GT350 but dam they gotta get a handle on some of these issues. True it’s possible this was done by someone else and not Ford but its to many for me to risk +$60K. Good video

I like the convo regarding sleeving the cylinders, however I don’t prefer boring the cylinders over sleeving as anything over 600 hp will simply blow through those thin walls.. better to go wide first.. perhaps an Holbrook performance block .. just send it.

Ford is a huge company, you’re a dude who got screwed. Put it back together and send it to ford.

This cylinder scoring is very similar to what I've seen, from borescope videos, in numerous gen 3 Coyote 5.0 engines that had the infamous "typewriter tick" that Ford says is completely normal for this engine. I initially thought that it was due to piston slap but as it turns out the scoring is often not on the thrust axis of the piston, hence it must be some other problem. I know that Ford uses a hypereutectic aluminum alloy in the pistons for increased strength because they're using cast instead of forged pistons, so it may be that the ring lands are only of marginal strength in handling the combustion pressures of a NA engine with a 12:1 static CR, let alone the pressures seen in a boosted FI engine. I believe we may be seeing a similar pathology with the 5.2-liter Voodoo engine that's in your GT 350. I think it's not unreasonable to speculate that Ford would apply similar cost reduction measures in the manufacturing of the Voodoo engines as they apparently did with the Coyote engines, hence my disgust with Ford as a car company. In rebuilding this engine, or a Coyote, for performance, I would just spend the extra money for a built engine with forged internals, which is probably what these cars needed anyways from the start. Knowing Ford, I would not even trust the plasma-spraying process they employ in building these sleeveless blocks and would want some independent qualified judgment on Ford's implementation of this process before I would shell out the kind of bucks this company wants for its products. I had a Porsche years ago that had sleeveless cylinders that were Nickasil treated and those were virtually indestructible, given adequate amounts of clean oil. I had the head off my engine at about 150K miles and each of the cylinder bores were measured with nearly zero taper and out of round wear, with the cross-hatch honing marks looking as if they had just been done. The Porsche mechanic told me that this was fairly typical of what he was seeing in these cars that had been taken care of with even much higher mileages. The point here is that these processes can result in an engine with good reliability if they are done correctly and with care. A word of warning on this engine: I have seen cases of apparent oiling failure on this engine where it may be that there is some potential problem with the oil pump. Make sure that the oil pump and any associated oil delivery parts and channels are rock-solid before rebuilding this engine or any other Voodoo. Good luck with this car.

That is true i had a oil consumption issue in my 2018 ford f-150 5.0 L at 20,260 miles and they just replaced the hole engine. My ford dealer (service tec) calls me all the time to check and see if i still have issues and i have been told that if needed they would replace it again. But that is my dealer not all are the same. That service department should have checked better!!

Oh and increase your oil canisters the stock ones and location are affected by Gforce energy and the up graded race grade equipment keep the oil in the right place between the lines everyone. The best part is watching the original coyote motors being driven in a old notch back across the street from my childhood house so every other day the motor was running a different set up from exhaust to intake though it is very temp specific motor once you all learn to keep her super cool that block is a beast and can handle all kinds of stuff.

This is the reason why it’s tough to buy used vehicles. People lie all the time just to sale the car.

Gavin for starters pull all the pistons check them out and the crank. Bore it out with all new pistons see if crank can be polished I'd not turn it or new crank. Send the heads to be checked out if they can be salvaged. New cams phasers timing chain. Reassemble it and go from there. Don't half ass it put the money in it to fix it right. Don't sleeve it unless the gouges or Too Deep

I would totally take it back to Ford. They didn’t even drive it when you took it to the dealer. That’s not your fault. Doesn’t matter that you turbo’ed the car in my opinion.

as a guy who has worked for a ford dealership, and this can go for any brand really, always cross check with different dealers and shops.

there may be machine shops that can put bearing inserts in your heads.. so they can be reused many times.. oil filters have bypass valves.. that when the engine is revved.. the oil flow is more than the filter media can pass and the internal valve opens and allows unfiltered oil to bypass and go directly into your oil galleys.. sleeve the block.. you must FLUSH EVERY OIL PASSAGE in the heads. the block the oil cooler.. to get out every debris chunk.

Pistons are not round but are oval and are designed to expand along the pin, 90 degrees to the skirt. Without having the chance to closely examine the block and pistons it looks like there was a tuning issue. It appears that there was a running condition that created extremely high cylinder temperatures causing the piston to over expand along the piston pin. The ring land area of the piston also has about .040" of extra cylinder wall clearance to allow for expansion but that was not enough in this case.

GAVIN get the block sleeved with some good ductile iron sleeves, where they machine the block out they cut out all of the sleeves so it’s a hollow box and they drop in sleeves that fill back up the area they cut out, and then the engine will literally handle 85 pounds of boost, well the block and sleeve will. Do it man sleeve it

Yeah, thats really sucks man, this kind of thing is a lot more common then we all would like to think. Working as a tech. Ive seen some shit that is really fucked up like this. When your doing a tear-down of an engine with issues, don't be surprised of this kind of thing. I would've put a scanner on, to see the misfire count, read the live data,and done a power balance to start off, since it seemed not right. I'd sleeve the block, and get better pistons if possible.
