Hi everyone,
In this video, I'm walking you through all of the handmade pieces that I've sewn, knit, or otherwise made myself over the past year or so! I hope you enjoy.
Please let me know what other kinds of sewing & making content you'd like to see from me in the comments!
PS, At one point partway through the video someone starts a lawn mower, I tried to reduce the sound as much as possible in editing, and I'm sorry if you still find it disruptive.
Thanks for watching!

it's really cool to see someone sewing their own clothes in a time when fast fashion is really popular. i'm thinking about learning to sew my own clothes. so, beginner tips about using patterns would be helpful. you could even show the process of making a piece, from searching for a pattern you like through cutting and sewing it.

Fast fashion clothing is hand made clothing. Someone hand makes it, they're just not white so nobody cares.

So impressive! The amount of started - and completed - projects is terrific. You seem to have a Japanese influenced aesthetic that you've adhered to in a disciplined way, which is hard to do in the candyshop that is the fabric-pattern universe. The payoff is a coherent wardrobe in terms of color palette and style. Now that you've got your covered, cozy pieces, I wonder if you as a beautiful young woman would enjoy the look of the same garment patterns treated as a translucent outer layer. In other words, could you envision some of the loose shirts and dresses made in sheer handkerchief linen or silk organza, with a coordinating opaque slip dress or camisole underneath? Black-on-black, ecru-on-ecru, blush-on-blush, pewter-on-pewter. Oh that aqua blue shade of the robe really suited. Anyway, a layered look could add more interest to the same color, and a bit of lightness and drape and arm silhouette, without giving up on the Asian influence. Just an idea. Well done. I'll be back for inspiration again some day. BTW, the handmade shoe reminded me you might like to check out a wonderful Australian blogger who executes beautiful projects from felting, knitting and dyeing to shoes, sewn underwear, clothing. Handmadebycarolyn's blog handmadebycarolyn.com.au/. She's modest, talented, and although she's busy making baby stuff for her new grandchildren now, she makes a lot of cool pieces for herself.

You probably know this now since I know it’s been awhile, and this may have been said 😅 but the reason why your white dress is gaping at the neckline is because you didn’t cut the bias tape on the bias. A great way to save fabric is to piece the bias together from multiple smaller pieces :) love your channel!! And you’re wardrobe. 😍

Hi Em, I know you think the Everyday dress is a bit big, but I think it looks great on you. Hell, your whole wardrobe looks amazing on you. What I LOVE about this video that is now a year old is how it shows your progression and what you learned as you moved from project to project. Like you, I returned to sewing during the Pandemic. Its nice to know I wasn't the only one sewing like a mad woman. Hahaha. :) Cheers! So glad I found your channel.

So happy I found your channel, too few Canadian sewists out there! I understand why you felt you made a lot of mistakes, but I really think the things that bother you about some of your makes are so easily fixable, and even the most experienced sewists have to use their unpicker at least once during a project. The neckband that bothers you can still be rolled in and hand tacked down. Your Wiksten coatigan issue can also easily be solved by just hand tacking your collar from the bottom part way up. That will improve the rolling you don't like. Or you could improvise a clapper and use a lot of steam or even bang at it with a rubber mallet all along the seam to get the area where it rolls to lie flatter and be more crisp. Those techniques are used in tailoring all the time to get things to behave the way you want. Looking forward to seeing more of what you're up to!
@EmilyLightly
@EmilyLightly 4 года назад
Thank you so much for your tips!! I was thinking about tacking down the collar on the wiksten coat but I wasn't sure if it would look weird where it isn't sewn down. Banging it with a mallet sounds like fun hahaha!

I have the same problem with printing patterns but I just calculate the proportion of what the square is to what it should be and use that percentage to find the right size (calculate the measurements given to what I want and find the size with the same proportion as the measuring square). Hope that made sense 😅

Everybody's entire wardrobe is handmade by this definition. There is no clothes sewing machine. All clothes are put through a sewing machine by a person, usually a woman or a girl who is being exploited or enslaved.

I really enjoyed this video as I have been sewing a lot of fabrics-store patterns myself as a beginner. Can I ask which size pattern of the augustina boxy tee you used?
@EmilyLightly
@EmilyLightly 3 года назад
Back in my notes I wrote that I cut a size 4-6. I'm usually a S-M or US size 6-8 in tops, and I prefer oversized for sure! But I've found that FS patterns run a little large. Also I print all of my patterns at the copy shop and I have very little control when it comes to sizing them properly, I feel like they all print slightly larger there. So take this all with a grain of salt haha!

Good job! The cardigan you knitted is beautiful. I've only ever made scarves! I'm intimidated by knitting patterns! The reason your notched color is puckered is because you have to trim that seam almost down to nothing or trim and clip down to sewing line in multiple places.

Your dark green linen tee from a knit pattern? If you want that neck to lay flat...Get some elastic cording from your fabric store (1mm, 3mm). At the neckband seam, open up a little on the wrong side. Using a tapestry needle thread the cord and then run it thru the neckband. Don't make this snug - with some finesse you can make it look flat. Try on before cutting cord to length. Hand tack the ends together. Sew up the small opening you made in the seam.

You have made some lovely clothes.Have you tried the continuous bias binding method to make bias binding,you can make two metres of bias. binding out of a 10" piece of fabric.It is easy to do and you can use fat quarters to make the bias binding
@edie-bleubird6812
@edie-bleubird6812 2 года назад
The white wrap dress, the gaping is because you didn't cut the binding on the bias, hence making the neckline heavy/stiff. If the binding stretches when when sewing you will get a better fit. Technically you won't use more fabric. I always alternat the longest strips with the shortest to balance it out.

Your clothing is lovely. How do you wash and dry your linen? Also what type of clothing (wool? )do you wear during wintertime?
@EmilyLightly
@EmilyLightly 3 года назад
I always wash it on cold and hang to dry. It does wrinkle but that's just linen for you ;) In winter I love layering linen pieces under a wool sweater or coat, I actually really like it in colder weather as well! Otherwise just your regular cotton tees, denim, wool sweaters & coats :)

@@EmilyLightly Oh, I wash my linen the same way but I never wear it in the winter so I dont have as many linen outfits as you do. I usually wear wool in the winter. I make 99% of my clothing. Linen and wool are my favorite fibers to sew but this summer I used a lot of cotton Voile and loved it!

hey I noticed you were talking about the problem of sizing of the patterns when you print them out...if you are in canada and buying patterns from the US, I'm pretty sure our "standard" paper size is different, I ended up using a pattern from someone in australia once and it ended up way too small due to the different standard paper size even if I printed the pattern at 100% US standard is usually "Letter sized" and other countries sometimes us "A4" paper which is wider and shorter than "letter"
@EmilyLightly
@EmilyLightly 3 года назад
Ohh that could be it! I always print it at 100% because the FS ones just come as one size, but you're right, they're probably for a slightly different paper so it throws it off a little. Thanks!

Hi Emily, your self made wardrobe is really beautiful :) The gapping neckline of your white wrap dress is very common when we have a deep "v" kind of neckline, because the edge is on the bias. You can sew a little dart if it's bothering you. Sorry If there are some mistakes on my text, english is not my mother language
@EmilyLightly

Oh thank you! I might ty adding a dart then!

I really like your style. And that is a really impressiv wardrobe! Can you tell me, how you find your patterns? For example which keyword you use/ how would you describe your style?
@EmilyLightly
@EmilyLightly 3 года назад
Thank you! And that's a really good question. I follow a lot of indie pattern companies on Instagram and just sort of make what I like! I started out with a lot of the free FabricsStore.com patterns though, which I would describe as simple linen patterns. But otherwise if I want to make a specific type of piece I'll search something different for each one, for example "balloon sleeve dress sewing pattern" or something. A lot of the fabric companies I shop at also have a great selection of indie patterns so I find lots there as well!

I think you should make a sewing video on how you made the things in your video.

Hi Emily, I just got sent this video by RU-vid suggestions. I love when they pick things I may enjoy! I am new to linen. You asked for video suggestions and I looked a bit on your videos. I would enjoy a video just on the fabrics you use and where you get them, your thoughts on them, care of them like wash first and care after you have made things and any other ideas you have about them. I would love to start using some. Thanks 😀

Great video! I'm a long-time knitter but newish sewer who loves linen- all your garments and pattern recommendations are really great. I would love love love to see some "sew-along" type videos walking through the process of some popular linen patterns, as a newer sewer I have found these incredibly helpful. Thanks so much!

Beautiful colors. You wear them all so well. Good job on all your pieces! So inspiring. I do not sew and it is a hundred bucks or more for hand made linen items.

Thank you so much! Yes, linen is definitely expensive. Much more economical if you can make it yourself, and these patterns are so simple and easy!
