I had been planning a move to the PH prior to the "global Medical emergency". Needless to say, I was delayed by several years. After bouncing to 8 different countries (mostly SE Asia) while PH laws relaxed I have finally made it here. I had a much different strategy than most gringos. I opted to head north to cooler climates and avoid all the Expat BS. I’m in a small town now where I am THE ONLY GRINGO and have been treated like a king. And I got a nice country (providence) girl that is incredible. So If cooler temperatures (78 today/rest of PH 97+) head north, but bring a positive open mind and please MIND YOUR MANNERS, we are all guest here, bad manners affects us all.

From my travel experiences in the PH I noticed that a lot, not all, Westerners were quick to be rude when things took longer than what they normally take in our Western cultures. Also noticed when things were different due to culture, a lot of Westerners would scoff and or make fun of the way Filipinos went about the task or duty at hand. If you couple all of this with another large portion of Westerners who engage in binge drinking and becoming obnoxious along with some other things I won’t name, I chose to surround myself with good Filipino friends while in the country. I mean the majority of my reasoning for being in the PH in the first place is to get away from Western culture. So I have no reason to go there and seek out an expat community. I have no problem having a few good expat friends but a large group na I’ll pass. Thanks for sharing 🤙🏻

Got one here who disagrees. The replies appear to be made by foreigners, I guess Westerners, and they seem like very good people. I would admit that there are those who can become angry and begin comparing with what they are used to and the service they may be receiving. But there are also people who may be curious, like me. I have found lots of Filipinos who decry the way things are done and the slowness with which something is happening. The only difference is that they know and are accustomed to the way things are done. So they accept it. Talk to an OFW who has been working outside the Philippines for a few years. They usually have lots of criticisms about the Philippines and I have been around and seen rude Filipinos. They are rare for sure, but I even had one inebriated man hit me because I didn't seem to be paying attention to him. My opinion is that with the more global communications we have between and among countries, the more we might see people "picking up" good and bad things from other cultures. Just something we all should know can happen. And now that we have had the Philosophy lesson for the day, thanks for your comments all and thanks to the publisher of this video.

To be honest, whenever I visit either the Philippines or Thailand, I usually only hang around the locals...for two reasons, they're almost always more friendly and they're a wealth of local information. Being an American, I'm over there to get away from Americans 😄 Quick story...I was on a cruise ship recently. Most of the wonderful crew are Philippino. For breakfast there's a omelet station that got quite busy so they gave out numbers for the wait list. An American passenger asked the Philippine restaurant worker why he needed a number to get an omelet. After the Philippino explained why the guy said "Fu#k you!" and walked away. The Philippino just continued doing his work and shrugged off the insult. It's terrible how some people treat the kind, polite Philippinos and who look at nice people as weak and give them no respect.

@@dhiznutsarhuj8810 American. That was not an uncommon occurrence. Its this entitled attitude and low class approach to treating people, especially Asians, as less human. I've been on over 30 cruises and there hasn't been a cruise where I haven't seen it, but its the minority as most people are in holiday spirits and are polite as well, so take it for what it is....there's just a lot of bitter, angry people out there so I have to constantly remind myself there's nice people as well.

Most recent visitors don't realize that Duma was the first place in the Phils to introduce outside terraces fronting restaurants and cafés. Afterwards other places started copying this Mediterranean style practice. Also, Duma embraces the sea with its magnificent waterfront. Many other cities turn their back to the sea (Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Cebu City...).

Great job on your quick impression of Dumaguete... I was there several months and will return to retire there... Why I like it there? There's everything you need within a 3 mile radius and without the crowds you'll find in Manila or Cebu... In downtown Dumaguete you can find a couple of different malls where you can find anything you might need.... By the boardwalk there's a restaurant row, you can try different foods and is very inexpensive.... I used to love to go running on the blvd and often interacted with the locals...The people are friendly, apartments are modern, I was renting an apartment fully furnished American Standards, free wifi, HBO, AC, and even a generator so you never has a brown out or black out....all for $260.00 per month plus utilities....

I live in Duma. Bloggers exaggerate about the number of expats. Before Covid, Chinese tourists far outnumbered expats and they haven't returned yet. Most expats live in neighboring towns and just do their shpping here plus nighlife. Just strolling through downtown Duma you might spot a dozen expats, not more. Most congregate in a few known places. It's definitely not overrun.

Dumaguete is good becouse of the Boulevard area good for long walks + the prices of Tricycles, foods, laundry, everything is low here. In Dumaguete its 20-40 Peso mostly Tricycle rides. While in Cebu City, Panglao, Moalboal etc its 100-200 pesos mostly. And the food Quality is really high when you know what places to go, and prices extremely low. Dumaguete is the place to live, if you want to enjoy everyday life with just $1000 a month. For me, its very hard to spend more then peso 1000 a day in Dumaguete, thats $20

You have to look where you find which types of foreigners, and which age span.. I wouldnt say that the boulevard is the place to go.. there are other spots.. Also you should not forget that most of the foreigners live in Valenica, which is a town a few minutes away. Beach parties are obviously more on the most popular beaches, like Dauin, Bacong and other places south of Dumaguete, also the tourists who go to dive at Apo Island, stay here. So lets say party for your age category is mostly outsourced :) I think, that the options on the Boulevard like Why Not? or Honeycomb maybe not to your liking

I think a few old retired expats started vlogging from there and then that opened the flood gates. These old men (mostly American) then formed a clique and it mushroomed from there. @@Livingabroadalex It’s cool we are almost in the same time zone. (I’m only 1 hour ahead in southern Shikoku). I look forward to your exciting announcement! Maybe you are moving? Or, have a GF... 😝. I’m not sure if I mentioned before, but I’m working on completing renovations to my house here in Japan 🇯🇵 in preparation to sell, so I can move to the PHs (or back to Canada 🇨🇦), but I think getting out of my comfort zone and challenge myself by moving to the PHs may help me to keep young. Besides, I don’t want to live with ice and snow for 5 months of the year! Talk later.

Vegas is a good example of terrible health care in a citie that is way over hyped . NOONE i Know looks at the hospitals ect... I would put this as a priority in your films. just a thought for you whats the average living cost in that town/ year?? looks fun..

Dumaguete is a small city but not a small town. A small town has like less than 60,000 people Dumaguete has 134,000 which is within the range of small cities (100,000 to 174,000)

Getting bored or not depends entirely on yourself. How do you think boomers entertained themselves for half a century without internet or wifi. Duma has both plus a vibrant cultural scene and music scene. Many bands performing in the evening.

im a local in this city and i can provide you an explanation as to why that is the case. Retired dudes - because forbes made a statement that dumaguete is the 5th best place to retire as well having the 1st american protestant school in asia back in 1901 (aka silliman university) so foreigners especially the western people are pretty familiar with the city. Students - Dumaguete aside from being a city of gentle people is also a University Town with 4 universities inside this tiny city, and Silliman as well being one of the top schools in the philippines and the only one outside manila. so that explains the students. Hope you find that as a reasonable explanation and also maybe want to drop by the city :) were not creepy at all and in my 27 years of living here, ive never got anything stolen in public, as well as felt being in danger altho you must be careful still. but if i forgot my belonging like my phone and bag someone will call your attention that you left it and if you go back your stuff will be there. not all the time but in my experience people here have a conscience just saying

@@sishamani1354 The creepy atmosphere is directed about the foreigner expats settling there. You must be a guy because women and children can have their predator radar switched on easily when you have these shady, pervy old men hanging around and feeling like they own the place when in fact they’re the guests. Your community should be keeping this in check because it can affect the reputation of the place and it will atttact more negative presence than otherwise.
