I’ve got a 1981 IH 584 fwa(4wd) and it has a similar, if not the same fuel tank sandwiched between the fenders. They are NOTORIOUS for not only leaking where they bolt-in but rusting inside and just crudding(is that a word?) up the fuel system. It might be worth it for you to pull the tank and having it hot tanked and coated my your local radiator/tank shop. I had mine done because it had swiss cheese ends, but with not having to ever worry about it rusting out & leaking again, I also NEVER have to worry about having rust/sediment clog things up! Mine doesn’t have a lift pump on it though, just gravity fed through the filters/separator to the injection pump. Btw, it cost me $375 to have my tank done and that came with a lifetime warranty.

I bought an old 784 about 12yrs ago and previous owner has a piece of pipe inside the tank up a couple of inches from the bottom so its not sucking in dirt from the bottom. Good idea but i got stranded first year when it ran out of diesel even though there was quite a bit in the bottom of the tank. Now that i know I just never let it get below half way empy.

I never did so as I was cautious with it Spent over 11,000 hrs on tractors in Arizona. Clean Oil filters every week. Air filters every hour of use was my motto. All Hyd. checked on the hour.

Hi Matt,you have some kind of magic in you to start that inter without bleeding the injection pump,it looks like a CAV DPA which is made under licence from Roosamaster. The rubber hose from the second filter to the rear top of the injection pump should be the inlet and the one on outside centre is the return. These pumps also sometimes trap air in the inlet to the transfer pump,and no amount of bleeding will clear it,so crack the inlet connection also. Lessons learned in 70 yrs of frustration,dirt,dust and diesel! in Australia 👍✅🚜

Great work! I'd be afraid of that pump diaphragm cracking and leaking fuel into the crankcase, but most of this stuff is tough. I'm big on taking mech pumps out and fitting electric pumps to get rid of needing to crank the motor to get pressure and there is no risk of the mech pump blowing fuel into the motor. I restore cars and they can sit for a time so it's nice to have the option to have full pressure and full bowls before grinding the starter for a long time. I have just put electric pumps inline to boost the mech pump too. Depends on diesel or gas, but I'm sure there's a way to rate pressure and flow of your mech pump to see if an electric pump may be an option. I very much enjoy your work on these great machines!

Hi Matt, I‘m a regular follower of your channel, I findet very interesting what you do and also your solutions to some of the technical issues. Here in this video I found the way you closed the primary fuel feed line from the tank to the pump fairly ingenious. Also I love the honesty of your videos , you focus on the solution of the problems and do not built up a big story around your own person, your team etc as others do, (like f.I. ###### Sparks). I would only wish you took a little more care of your own health, especially wear gloves when you work on oil or fuel, it is not good for your skin when you get in contact with such substances. Gloves like doctors wear, made from nitrile are cheap, don‘t influence the tactile feeling when handling nuts and bolts and give you at lest a basic protection.so take care, I‘m looking forward for your next video. Btw I‘m from Germany…

I'm in eastern Canada, the mosquitoes here are packing forks, knives and hot sauce. What did you do wrong? After much consideration, I think its the 2% beer, everything thing else fell into place when the clump of mud fell out of the fuel pump. I especially liked the 50 cent solution to close off the banjo fitting, a guy has to improvise with what he has around him, I'm glad you weren't broke, the tractor would have bled to death. All in all.., it was a job well done, I spose every guy deserves a cold wobbly pop after all that, I drank three while you were gone looking for filters.. cheers, keep up the great videos!👍👍👍

Junk in diesel fuel systems can be rust / water / or even anaerobic microbes which make a sludge in the tank. If the filters keep getting clogged, suggest cleaning the entire system. Once it’s clean, they make antibacterial additives for the fuel, which is helpful especially on equipment that is used infrequently….

@WatchWesWork
@WatchWesWork 4 года назад
I bet that tractor was made in England, or at least the engine. I'm not 100% sure what injection pump that is, but it looks like some version of a CAV/Lucas. I believe the line you call a return is actually the supply and the other line coming from the timing window is the bleed line, but that's an odd setup. There is a vane pump inside the injection pump, but it feeds pistons that actually create the high pressure for the injectors. I've seen this same kind of issues a lot of times. All the crap settles to the bottom of the tank and ends up in the lift pump. A lot of tractors have the first fuel filter before the lift pump just for that reason.
@DieselCreek

My ex had a MB Sprinter CDI... over time it got harder and harder to start while warm, and I figured that it was the low pressure fuel pump as the symptoms fit with my C class that was fixed with a new pump. Changed the pump, no difference. It was so bad, that I added a new fuel line with outboard style squeege bulb just to get it running. Then one day I figured, hey, maybe it’s the filter... took out the hose connection towards the HP pump and pressed the bulb...barely a trickle coming out. Went to get a new filter, installed it and squeezed again - diesel shot up 2 meters in the air. Fixed. And I felt sooooooo dumb!

Seems to me that it would be wise to wash the fuel tank out thoroughly sometime this summer otherwise your likely to suffer the same problem again before too long and messing with diesel in cold weather is never good! There is a bleed screw on the injection pump (RH side above the centre line of the pump) - usually black and looks like a tiny bolt screwed into a hollow bolt which in turn is screwed into the injection pump. Beware of being heavy handed when screwing and tightening it back in - easy to cross thread or strip the threads in the pump by over-tightening. Although this a rotary pump, which do normally need an injector cracking off these don't, they will self bleed and start pretty promptly. Cold Starting. If yours is like mine there is a particular position on the stop control lever which is a excess fuel / cold start position part way between Stop and Run - might pay to check this out? Mine also has a "glow plug" device in the inlet manifold. Check for a hefty fuse in the power line, connections and wire quality and if necessary remove the heater. Check it is working across a good battery as they do occasionally fail. One point does your diesel supply have added added Bio / Ethanol added to it? If so an organism (fungus) can and will grow in the fuel leading to early blocked filters. This is not normally visible to the naked eye but can be removed by pre-filtering the fuel. This is a process that can be done by specialists and is sometimes described as "fuel polishing" Also lastly we in the UK have winter grade diesel and summer grade - do you? Winter grade contains additives to reduce fuel waxing and gelling, so summer grade in the tractors fuel tank in winter time is frequently a real pain as it is often the case in a machine that not used a great deal. Hope this helps some at least, Dan

I would say that you have diesel bug in your tank, the long standing starting issue if it has gone was likely a combo of those loose fittings & the debris in the filter. A couple of useful additions to the ol service truck, a removable bench vice & an air compressor.

Make sure that you get a Tank Liner specifically formulated for Diesel Fuel , as there are different formulations for Diesel , Gasoline , and Water . Also , install a Shutoff Valve on the bottom of the Fuel Tank . You should also be using Soft Copper Crush Washers on both sides of each & every Banjo Fitting to prevent Air and/or Fuel leaks . -- < Doc , Retired , Union Certified Top Millwright - Senior Underground Mine Maintenance Mechanic , Certified Welder - Fabricator > .

Nice vid Matt and nice tractor. You should pressure wash the engine and get all that crud off. The engine will run cooler. You can usually replace the diaphragm in that fuel feed pump. I love the rubber band and two quarters to shut off the fuel. I had a big smile .. HA!

The trash in the lift pump was before your filters. Put a tank shut off valve at the tank and a in line brass mesh filter in a clear housing ( like glass) that you can see when it collects crap. I did that to my M.F. 210. Have never had any more issues. I liked the inner tube and quarter trick on that banjo fitting 👍

Hey, it's great to see some 454 videos! I bought a neglected one and am in the process of doing a functional restoration. I've been having similar fuel issues on mine. None of the filters had been changed for decades as far as I could tell. When I took of the primary fuel filter, it was full of grit. Looked like someone had emptied a cup of coffee grounds on it. Couldn't even see the baffle holes where fuel should flow into the filter. Makes me wonder about the condition of the fuel tank. I learned some things from your video and confirmed some suspicions. Thanks for posting some great 454 content!

Your tractor has a "start position" on the fuel control. The manual describes it as "approximately one third of the way up from the 'STOP' position". Not sure if you were aware of that, I dont recall hearing you mention it. My 454 is a gasser, so that's all I know about it.

Good work Luke. Another thing to look for which can cause issues is, on some of the CAV pumps there is yet another gauze filter under the union where the inlet fuel pipe goes into the injector pump. Once you have removed the inlet supply pipe, unscrew the next part as well and on the inside of that you might find a brass gauze filter too. I have seen these on lots of Perkins engines with CAV pumps and if the filters are not changed regularly, they can block up too which causes problems starting due to poor fuel delivery. Love your videos 👍

My Dad and Great Uncle ran a 674 & 574 respectively; great machine's, but hard starting in weather below 40*F is an endemic issue with all models in that range with the IH engine's. Your best bet is to install a stand alone tank type block heater. Up here in Michigan we and the neighbors that owned these all agreed that one sized for a large displacement small block V8 worked well. For daily farm use we would use a heavy duty stand alone timer to switch the heater on about 1/2 hour to an hour before we would normally need it, and switch it off several hours later. Great starter's when the block is warm to the touch. As far as needing to bleed the injectors, in the 40+ years that I ran and maintained them, we never needed to bleed then. Just cranked them 15~20 seconds, wait a minute or two and repeat. 2~3 times was usually all it takes.

Don't take er up to 88 while you are in the creek. Too much spray, messes up the liner phase sequence and you end up in some really crazy time/space oddity.
@langdons2848

I like the “88 miles an hour” reference, but the timelapse at the end gave me strong Endor, speeder bike vibes! Great little fix Matt. Coincidentally I just had exactly the same problem with my skid steer yesterday. Luckily for me though there was an inline filter before the lift pump that caught all of the junk, so I only had to replace it, not pull the lift pump too.

I was watching and telling you where to go and what to do and you did! Those CAV fuel systems are so reliable. I got called to a JCB back hoe road side job when I was with Sydney Water, he was stopped over a water main repair. The glass bowl on the primary filter was choked with mud, I removed and cleaned the fuel lift pump, fuel filter bowls and fitted new filters and had him working in 35 minutes. Engines need clean fuel, clean air and clean oil.

Hey Matt As always love yer channel. Have been contemplating picking up a tractor to use while I rebuild my 1980 Kubota L3001LT DT The Kub is my favourite and after doing spartan duty for 20yrs it still runs strong but needs clutch, brakes and a rewire so will be out of commission most of the summer and into the fall. Like you too much else going on but I don't have the benefit of youth any longer for those weeks of 18hr days to follow through. On the sunny side of 60 its shorter days and fewer of them so wish I could have your stamina again. The relief tractor I'm looking at is a IH 590 which is pretty clapped out but may have enough life left in her to get me through. Was looking over videos of IH to familiarize myself with them when came across yours. Unuaual for me not to know of a machine you own as I watch the channel regularly. Thanks for the Laughs! Keep it up! You're very informative and entertaining. Your ode to OSHA is the best. Swinging a Cub Cadet off the back of the truck with a winch hung off my mezzanine last night brought that to mind.
