I respect that guy. Came down gave them advice, they learned something and made them a fair offer. Ain’t nothing wrong with that. Yeah they may be worth more than the standard engine but he was giving a rebuilt engine and taking one that needed rebuilding. That was where the value was.

As evidenced by their more recent vid finding out all the WLDR engine bits - never accept an offer before you know the value of what you have. It's just plain stupid to do so. Buyers will not somehow magically disappear while you do your research. Don't rush like a rookie.

This is bringing back memories. In the late '80s to early '90s we were piecing these bikes together while we were stationed at Clark Air Base, Philippines. Once the Australians got wind of it our cheap source for parts got more expensive. My friend Brad put together a '42 WLA that I helped with. That was a fun bike to ride with the rocker clutch and tank mounted shifter.

A lot of people here in the comments seem to think you should have gone with this trade but I'm glad you didn't. While this expert seemed to be really straight forward and cordial with you I couldn't help but get an off feeling about the trade. Like others have stated, while he seemed to be straightforward with his knowledge he also seemed to be too enthusiastic for the motor even after he found out that it's not the racing variant that he thought it was. I think you perfectly summed up my reasoning why you should keep the motor at the end of the video. You guys know this hodgepodge of parts works so it's best to get that back together before you start modifying and get stuck down that rabbit hole.

Aircraft stripper is awesome. I used it on my 1970 Dodge Challenger way back in the day. Probably about 40 years ago. I use to buy it by the gallon. The best way to remove paint. Saves a lot of money in buying sandpaper when your stripping down a vehicle to bare metal.
@ryanguzman91
@ryanguzman91 2 года назад
On Nov 22 2019, all methylated (containing methylene chloride) paint removers for consumer use were banned by the EPA in the states. The non methylated version of aircraft remover does not work nearly as good as the old version. It does work, but pretty much requires scoring the clear coat and sometimes multiple applications.

I had those barrels on my 45 back in ‘69-‘70. Also the larger aluminum heads with multi-directional oversized fins. The 4 bolt manifold and carb made it a factory racing motor according to my dealer, ex-factory rider, and now AMA Hall of Fame member, Buddy Stubbs. Love that the guy had a good proposition, and although tempting, with any classic restoration for rivet counters it's good to keep it as close to what you started with to hold value. Start putting newer or non matching motors on something will be worth something to some people, but with closer to stock or whatever is on it now will increase the value, especially if it is a special race motor or something that fits the model year better. Just my opinion.

I traded an AR15 that I had "modified" to be full auto for a 1948 WL. It was spray painted all over with a "camo" paint job. Wheels, forks motor, everything. Guy said he used it for hunting. I stripped it and found that it was chrome all over, wheels forks, motor covers. I got it to run, but it had no front brake and the rear brakes are crap. Maybe an inch wide and worn out. The suicide clutch was just that and stopping and starting on a hill was a challenge. Finally I had a near death experience on it when I got on the interstate off-ramp and the traffic light at the intersection changed red. The bike would not stop. I geared down, and down, standing on the brake, but shot out into the intersection just slotting between two speeding trucks. I put it for sale next day and had a hundred guys wanting it. Sold it that day for $1400. I had 500 into my AR15 so I made a profit. That was 1989.

You are in Lancaster! I lived in Ridly/Delaware County! I just moved to florida. I can’t believe you lived that close to me.

def feel that guy had a lot more knowledge than he was letting on cuz he wanted that motor to finish a build or sell it to a buddy for mucho moola, but, thats ok, he seemed cool

You should get ahold of the museum called wheels through time, or something like that. And get them to go over the pieces you have! ....from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 🤠

That dude was trying to score a race motor for the trade of a titled stock rebuild. ( No way) You have the right idea with keeping your motor and making it right for the bike !!!! There's gold in them there hills. Keep truckin

Right move guys, hang onto it! BTW that measuring Calliper you use is called a Vernier Gauge not a Micrometer. A Micrometer is many times more accurate and has a threaded barrel not a slide.

It's not a vernier gauge, it was a dial caliper. lol

@@TexasLeverGunner Yes that too. In my day it had both a dial and a vernier scale - 😎

@@graxav Just dial calipers to me. Grew up with a grandfather and a father being master machinists, one for 58 years, the other for 35. Guess it doesn't matter what you want to call it, but hard to find a dial caliper in a catalog under vernier gauges.

I felt like you were going to go with the trade deal. Had it been for a WWII era I'd have gone for it. I think you made the right choice... and met a cool guy who knows aaaaall about them too and will come in handy further down your journey.

Watching this teardown and build with great interest. Would have been cool if you would have showed the frame in detail after blasting and before paint. Have fun and keep learning!
