Love your style, great review video, not only informational but entertaining. I am trying to decided a kick wheel or an electric and it looks like this one is both. My only problem is finding a permanent spot for it lol
Thank you for this video--- I have a Lockerbie without motor---and am new to throwing....any suggestions on how to become comfortable with this machine? I feel "clunky"...I suppose the answer will be get back on it and spend more and more time with it right?
Yes, actually! The more time you spend on it, it will start feeling less and less clunky. There are aspects of it that will always be what they will be - it's big. It IS clunky in a lot of ways. But it IS also extremely functional. This idea has been around MUCH longer than the belt driven wheels, (as far back as Mesopotamia!) so this big boy will be here long after the belts have all broken. Having said that - I am currently saving up for a belt driven 😂 I want a Brent wheel, but that's only because its the wheel that I'll purchase that will be a step UP from my Lockerbie.
That’s awesome. Yes, the motor will make a huge difference. I use just the kick part when I’m trimming. Without the motor I doubt I could get it fast enough to really get a good center honestly.
I didn’t. You can literally just drill through the wheel head to attach pins. It can be tricky to get them in the right spot and I don’t have advice on how to do that- but that’s what was done on mine.
You wouldn't have to put a bat down if you don't want to - unless it already has the screws in the top for a snap on bat. I used the screws in the top of mine (mine had them) and I use the Dirty Girls Bat System - where you get smaller bats that fit into a main bat holder. Makes swapping pots a lot easier without the warp of yanking them off the main bat. If you decide not to use bats - you just cut off your piece from the wheel, using a wire cutting tool, and then add some fresh water and cut again until it starts moving. Slide it to the edge and put it on something stable. So, bats aren't a must, but they do make throwing consecutive things a lot easier. If you add a bat system, you'll have to drill through the top of the head and add your screws. It's not hard, but you do need a drill and drill bits and that sort of thing. (probably way more info than you wanted ha!)
@@janebell469 yes. I use a lot too. I keep a pile of sponges all on the broad deck of it. I end up with a small spot on my floor that gets clay water on it. But yes, a lot splashes. But- because it doesn’t get super super fast, it does mostly hit the deck
The way that my motor is set up, it only goes one direction. I’m not sure if you can mount it backwards to switch directions. It wouldn’t be as simple as the newer belt driven ones- a flip of a switch- it would take time to swap it all around if that would even work. Not sure!
I use a batting system by Dirty Girl Pottery. I drilled holes in the head of my wheel in order to fasten the bat systems to it. A quick google search shows Sheffield Pottery with a pair for $3.48. Grab a drill and make sure your marks are where they need to be! That's the hardest part.
